10 Etiquettes of Dua

Adopting these etiquettes increases the likelihood of your dua being accepted by Allah (SWT).

  • Sincerity (Ikhlas) to Allah alone
  • Praise Allah and send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ
  • Face the Qiblah if possible
  • Raise your hands
  • Be in a state of Wudhu (purity)
  • Trust that Allah will answer
  • Be persistent and don’t be impatient
  • Lower your voice (between silence and aloud)
  • Confess your sins and seek forgiveness
  • Eat and earn halal income

14 Golden Times

There are specific times when the doors of the heavens are opened and duas are more likely to be answered.

  • The last third of the night
  • During Sujood (Prostration)
  • Between Adhan and Iqamah
  • At the end of obligatory prayers (before tasleem)
  • When rain falls
  • While traveling
  • At the time of breaking fast (Iftar)
  • On the Day of Arafah
  • Laylatul Qadr (Night of Decree)
  • A specific hour on Friday (often said to be last hour of Asr)
  • While drinking Zamzam water
  • Upon hearing the rooster crowing
  • During the gathering of Muslims for Dhikr

Begin with Praise (Hamd)
Start by praising Allah (SWT) using His beautiful names.
Example: “Alhamdulillah Rabbil ‘Alamin…”

Send Blessings (Salawat)
Send peace and blessings upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Example: “Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad…”

Seek Forgiveness (Istighfar)
Repent for your sins to clear the path for your dua.
Example: “Astaghfirullah…”

State Your Need
Ask Allah for whatever you wish, with humility and sincerity.
Example: “O Allah, grant me…”

Close with Salawat & Ameen
End the dua as you started, with blessings on the Prophet ﷺ.
