Background

Various sahih narrations describe the Prophet ﷺ saying remembrance before sleep, including praising Allah for life after death‑like sleep and entrusting the soul to Him; “Al‑ḥamdu lillāh alladhī aḥyānā…” is one such wording. These adhkar turn sleep into an act of worship, reminding the believer that sleep is a minor death and that waking up is a fresh gift from Allah to be used well

Benefit

They help cleanse the heart at the end of the day, inspire gratitude, and protect against harm and nightmares by sleeping in a state of remembrance.

When to recite

Recite before sleeping.

In Allah’s name, I trust in Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from going astray or being led astray, slipping or being made to slip, wronging or being wronged, acting ignorantly or being treated ignorantly.

Why this dua?

Reciting it brings the heart to rely on Allah, not one’s own planning, and reminds a person they are always under His care in public spaces

Upon Waking

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi lladhī aḥyānā baʿda mā amatānā wa ilayhi n-nushūr.

“All praise is for Allah who gave us life after causing us to die (in sleep), and to Him is the resurrection.”

Why this dua?

This dua helps the believer begin the day with gratitude, awareness of death and resurrection, and renewed purpose. It is especially meaningful because it transforms waking up from a routine physical event into remembrance of Allah, thankfulness, and preparation for the Hereafter.

Entering the Home

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ الْمَوْلَجِ وَخَيْرَ الْمَخْرَجِ، بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَلَجْنَا، وَبِسْمِ اللَّهِ خَرَجْنَا، وَعَلَى اللَّهِ رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا

Allāhumma innī as’aluka khayra l-mawlaji wa khayra l-makhraj, bismillāhi walajnā, wa bismillāhi kharajnā, wa ʿalā llāhi rabbinā tawakkalnā.

O Allah, I ask You for the best of entry and the best of exit. In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon Allah our Lord we rely.
