Protect Us from the Fire

رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَذَا بَاطِلًا سُبْحَانَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Transliteration

Rabbana ma khalaqta hadha batilan subhanaka faqina ‘adhab an-nar

Translation

Our Lord, You did not create this without purpose; glory be to You, so protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Background

This supplication is part of a description of people of understanding who remember Allah in all states, reflect on creation, then ask to be saved from the Fire. The verse paints a picture of hearts that are alive: constantly remembering Allah, pondering the heavens and earth, and then turning that reflection into a heartfelt plea for protection from Hell.

رَبَّنَا إِنَّنَا سَمِعْنَا مُنَادِيًا يُنَادِي لِلْإِيمَانِ أَنْ آمِنُوا بِرَبِّكُمْ فَآمَنَّا رَبَّنَا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرْ عَنَّا سَيِّئَاتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ الْأَبْرَارِ ۝ رَبَّنَا وَآتِنَا مَا وَعَدتَّنَا عَلَىٰ رُسُلِكَ وَلَا تُخْزِنَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ۖ إِنَّكَ لَا تُخْلِفُ الْمِيعَادَ

Rabbana innanā samiʿnā munādiyān yunādī lil-īmān an āminū birabbikum fa-āmannā, rabbana faghfir lanā dhunūbanā wa kaffir ʿannā sayyiātinā wa tawaffanā maʿa l-abrār. Rabbana wa ātinā mā waʿadtanā ʿalā rusulika wa lā tukhzinā yawma l-qiyāmah, innaka lā tukh'lifu l-mīʿād.

“Our Lord, we have heard a caller to faith, saying, ‘Believe in your Lord,’ and we have believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins, wipe out our misdeeds, and cause us to die with the righteous. Our Lord, grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Surely You never break Your promise.”

Dua of Those Who Reflect

رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَـٰذَا بٰطِلًا ، سُبْحٰنَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ. رَبَّنَآ إِنَّكَ مَنْ تُدْخِلِ النَّارَ فَقَدْ أَخْزَيْتَهُۥ ۖ ، وَمَا لِلظّـٰلِمِيْنَ مِنْ أَنصَارٍ. رَبَّنَآ إِنَّنَا سَمِعْنَا مُنَادِيًا يُّنَادِىْ لِلْإِيْمَـٰنِ أَنْ اٰمِنُوْا بِرَبِّكُمْ فَاٰمَنَّا ۚ ، رَبَّنَا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوْبَنَا وَكَفِّرْ عَنَّا سَيِّـاٰتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ الْأَبْرَارِ. رَبَّنَا وَاٰتِنَا مَا وَعَدْتَّنَا عَلَىٰ رُسُلِكَ وَلَا تُخْزِنَا يَوْمَ الْقِيـٰمَةِ ۗ ، إِنَّكَ لَا تُخْلِفُ الْمِيْعَادَ.

Rabbanā mā khalaqta hādhā bāṭilā, subḥānaka faqinā ʿadhāba-n-nār. Rabbanā innaka man tudhkili-n-nāra fa-qad akhzaytah, wa mā li-ẓ-ẓālimīna min anṣār. Rabbanā in-nanā samiʿnā munādiya-y-yunādī lil-īmāni an āminū bi-Rabbikum fa-āmannā, Rabbanā fa-ghfir lanā dhunūbanā wa kaffir ʿannā sayyi’ātinā wa tawaffanā ma-ʿal-abrār. Rabbanā wa ātinā mā wa-ʿadtanā ʿalā rusulika wa lā tukhzinā yawmal-qiyāmah, in-naka lā tukhliful-mīʿād.

Our Lord, You have not created all this (the heavens and the earth) without purpose- You are free from any defects- so protect us from the torment of the Fire. Our Lord, indeed whoever You admit to the Fire, You have disgraced him, and for the wrongdoers there are no helpers. Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller calling to faith, [saying], ‹Believe in your Lord,› so we have believed. Our Lord, forgive us our sins, wipe out our bad deeds, and let us die with the truly righteous. Our Lord, bestow upon us all that You have promised us through Your messengers and do not humiliate us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You never break Your promise.

Why this dua?

For reflection, forgiveness, protection from the Fire, a good ending, and confidence in Allah’s promise.

رَبَّنَا إِنَّنَا آمَنَّا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Reliance and Rescue from Oppressors

فَقَالُوا عَلَى اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْنَا رَبَّنَا لَا تَجْعَلْنَا فِتْنَةً لِلْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ ۝ وَنَجِّنَا بِرَحْمَتِكَ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ

Faqālū ʿalā llāhi tawakkalnā, rabbana lā tajʿalnā fitnatan lil-qawmi ẓ-ẓālimīn. Wa najjinā biraḥmatika mina l-qawmi l-kāfirīn.

“They said, ‘In Allah we trust. Our Lord, do not make us a trial for the wrongdoing people, and save us by Your mercy from the disbelieving people.’”

Why this dua?

For protection from oppressive people and rescue through Allah’s mercy.

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina ‘adhab an-nar

Our Lord, give us good in this world, good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the Fire.
