Laylatul Qadr Dua

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

Transliteration

Allāhumma innaka ʿafuwwun tuḥibbu l-ʿafwa faʿfu ʿannī.

Translation

O Allah, You are Pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon me.

Background

Aishah asked the Prophet ﷺ what to say if she recognized Laylatul Qadr, and he taught her to ask Allah for pardon. The most established wording is centred on Allah being al-Afuww, the One who pardons and loves to pardon.

Benefit

A concise dua for Allah’s pardon, especially in the last ten nights of Ramadan and whenever seeking forgiveness.

When to recite

Recite frequently during Laylatul Qadr, the last ten nights of Ramadan, and any time you ask Allah for pardon.

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَىٰ عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِي، فَاغْفِرْ لِي فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana ‘abduka, wa ana ‘ala ‘ahdika wa wa‘dika mastata‘t, a‘udhu bika min sharri ma sana‘t, abu’u laka bini‘matika ‘alayya, wa abu’u bidhambi, faghfir li fa innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa ant

O Allah, You are my Lord; none is worthy of worship but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I keep Your covenant as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil I have done. I acknowledge Your favour and my sin, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.

Why this dua?

Regularly reciting it nurtures sincere tawbah and a truthful view of oneself as a servant dependent on Allah’s mercy. The hadith mentions a special hope for Paradise for those who die after sincerely reciting it morning or night.

Forgiveness Even If Already Forgiven

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْعَلِيُّ الْعَظِيمُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْحَلِيمُ الْكَرِيمُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ

Lā ilāha illallāhu al-ʿAliyyu al-ʿAẓīm. Lā ilāha illallāhu al-Ḥalīmu al-Karīm. Lā ilāha illallāh. Subḥānallāhi Rabbi al-ʿArshi al-ʿAẓīm. Al-ḥamdu lillāhi Rabbi al-ʿālamīn.

There is no god worthy of worship except Allah, the Most High, the Magnificent. There is no god worthy of worship except Allah, the Forbearing, the Generous. There is no god worthy of worship except Allah. Glory be to Allah, Lord of the Magnificent Throne. All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds.

Why this dua?

For seeking forgiveness through words of tawhid, praise and glorification of Allah.

Adam’s Repentance

رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ

Rabbana zalamna anfusana wa il-lam taghfir lana wa tarhamna lanakunanna minal-khasirin

Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers.

Why this dua?

Reciting it helps cultivate humility, admission of fault, and hope in Allah’s mercy after sin, following the model of our first parents.

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ الرَّاحِمِينَ

Rabbi-ghfir warham wa anta khayrur-rahimin

It gently trains the heart to keep asking for forgiveness and mercy, even after hearing about lofty ideals and heavy warnings, and to see Allah as the ultimate source of compassion
