Entering the Home

Hadith/Dhikr

Transliteration

Allāhumma innī as’aluka khayra l-mawlaji wa khayra l-makhraj, bismillāhi walajnā, wa bismillāhi kharajnā, wa ʿalā llāhi rabbinā tawakkalnā.

Translation

O Allah, I ask You for the best of entry and the best of exit. In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon Allah our Lord we rely.

Understand the dua

Background & benefit

Background

Said when entering the home.

Benefit

Brings remembrance and reliance into the household routine.

When to recite

Mention Allah when entering the home. This fixed wording may be recited with awareness that the general of remembering Allah on entry is stronger than the specific wording itself.

Virtue note

The strongest established meaning is that mentioning Allah when entering the house and at mealtime prevents Shaytan from sharing lodging and food. The specific fixed wording is presented with caution because its report is not as strong as the general instruction to remember Allah when entering.
