Transliteration
Bismillāh.

In the name of Allah.
Understand the dua
Background & benefit
Said before beginning ablution.
Begins purification with Allah’s name.
Recite when stopping at a place, arriving somewhere, staying in an unfamiliar location, or seeking protection from harm.
The narration mentions that whoever says it when stopping at a place will not be harmed by anything until leaving that place.

Authenticity: Scholars differed
The common practice is to say Bismillāh before wudu. Scholars discussed the grading of the narrations about mentioning Allah’s name before wudu, while many jurists still recommend it before beginning wudu. It should be understood as a well-known recommended practice, not as an agreed-upon condition for the validity of wudu.
