Background & benefit

Background

This verse captures Ibrahim’s plea after building the Kaʿbah, asking Allah to make Makkah secure and to keep him and his descendants away from worshipping idols. Even though he personally smashed idols, Ibrahim still feared falling into shirk for himself and his children, showing how serious and subtle idolatry can be. His dua ties the safety of a city with the safety of hearts from false worship.

Benefit

It teaches a believer to worry more about faith than material comfort, and to regularly ask Allah for personal and family protection from all forms of shirk—obvious and hidden.
