Frequently Asked Questions

Who must pay Zakat?
Every Muslim who is sane, adult, and possesses wealth above the Nisab threshold for one lunar year must pay Zakat.
What is Nisab?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess before Zakat becomes obligatory. It is equal to 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver.
When is Zakat due?
Zakat is due once every lunar year (Hawl) from the date your wealth first exceeded the Nisab threshold.
Can I give Zakat to family?
You cannot give Zakat to your parents, children, or spouse. You can give it to other relatives like siblings, cousins, or aunts/uncles if they are eligible (poor/needy).
How do I calculate Zakat?
Zakat is calculated as 2.5% of your total zakatable assets (cash, gold, silver, business merchandise, etc.) minus your immediate debts.
Is Zakat payable on jewelry?
According to the majority of scholars, Zakat is payable on gold and silver jewelry if it exceeds the Nisab, even if it is for personal use (though there is a difference of opinion).
What is the difference between Zakat and Sadaqah?
Zakat is obligatory, has a fixed rate (2.5%), and specific recipients. Sadaqah is voluntary charity, can be any amount, and can be given to anyone.
What if I have debt?
Debts that are due immediately can be deducted from your total assets before calculating Zakat. Long-term debts (like mortgages) are treated differently by scholars; usually, only the upcoming year’s payments are deductible.
