Background & benefit

Background

Abu Bakr al‑Ṣiddīq asked the Prophet ﷺ for a dua to recite in his prayer, and he was taught this supplication admitting great injustice to oneself and asking for forgiveness and mercy. The background shows even the best of the companions seeking special words to use in ṣalāh, and being given a dua centered on recognizing sin and turning to Allah’s unique ability to forgive.

Benefit

It deepens humility during prayer and beyond, reminding worshippers that no one is free of sin and that mercy is always sought from Allah directly.
