  1. 1

    ʻABASA wa-tawallaa,

    He [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ) ] frowned and turned away

  2. 2

    ʹAñ jaaa-ʹahul ʹaʻmaa.

    Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].

  3. 3

    Wa-maa yudreeka laʻallahoo yaz-zakkaa?―

    But what would make you perceive, [O Muḥammad], that perhaps he might be purified

  4. 4

    ʹAw yaẓ-ẓak-karu fatañfaʻahuẓ Ẓikraa?

    Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?

  5. 5

    ʹAmmaa manis tag̣naa,

    As for he who thinks himself without need,

  6. 6

    فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ

    Faʹañta lahoo taṣaddaa;

    To him you give attention.

  7. 7

    Wa-maa ʻalayka ʹallaa yaz-zakkaa.

    And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.

  8. 8

    Wa-ʹammaa mañ jaaa-ʹaka yasʻaa,

    But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]

  9. 9

    Wa-huwa yakhshaa,

    While he fears [Allāh],

  10. 10

    Faʹañta ʻanhu talahhaa.

    From him you are distracted.

  11. 11

    كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ

    Kallaaa ʹinnahaa Taẓkirah:

    No! Indeed, they [i.e., these verses] are a reminder;

  12. 12

    Famañ shaaʹa ẓakarah.

    So whoever wills may remember it.

  13. 13

    Fee ṣuḥufim mukarramah,

    [It is recorded] in honored sheets,

  14. 14

    Marfooʻatim muṭahharah,

    Exalted and purified,

  15. 15

    Biʹaydee safarah―

    [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,

  16. 16

    Kiraamim bararah.

    Noble and dutiful.

  17. 17

    Q̣utilal ʹiñsaanu maaa ʹakfarah?

    Destroyed [i.e., cursed] is man; how disbelieving is he.

  18. 18

    Min ʹayyi shayʹin khalaq̣ah?

    From what thing [i.e., substance] did He create him?

  19. 19

    مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ

    Min nuṭfah: khalaq̣ahoo faq̣addarah;

    From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;

  20. 20

    ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ

    S̤ummas sabeela yas-sarah;

    Then He eased the way for him;

  21. 21

    ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ

    S̤umma ʹamaatahoo faʹaq̣barah;

    Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.

  22. 22

    S̤umma ʹiẓaa shaaaʹa ʹañsharah.

    Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.

  23. 23

    Kallaa lammaa yaq̣ḍi maaa ʹamarah.

    No! He [i.e., man] has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.

  24. 24

    Falyañz̤̣uril ʹiñsaanu ʹilaa Ṭaʻaamih:

    Then let mankind look at his food -

  25. 25

    ʹAnnaa ṣabab nalmaaaʹa ṣabbaa,

    How We poured down water in torrents,

  26. 26

    ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّا

    S̤umma sha-q̣aq̣nal ʹarḍa shaq̣q̣aa;

    Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],

  27. 27

    Faʹambatnaa feehaa Ḥabbaa,

    And caused to grow within it grain

  28. 28

    Wa-ʻinabañw Waq̣aḍbaa,

    And grapes and herbage

  29. 29

    Wa-zaytoonañw Wanakhlaa,

    And olive and palm trees

  30. 30

    Wa-ḥadaaaʹiq̣a g̣ulbaa,

    And gardens of dense shrubbery

  31. 31

    Wa-faaki-hatañw Waʹabbaa,

    And fruit and grass -

  32. 32

    Mataaʻal lakum wa-liʹanʻaamikum.

    [As] enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.

  33. 33

    Faʹiẓaa jaaa-ʹatiṣ Ṣaaakhkhah,―

    But when there comes the Deafening Blast

  34. 34

    Yawma yafirrul mar-ʹu min ʹakheeh,

    On the Day a man will flee from his brother

  35. 35

    Wa-ʹummihee wa-ʹabeeh,

    And his mother and his father

  36. 36

    Wa-ṣaaḥi-batihee wa-baneeh.

    And his wife and his children,

  37. 37

    Likul lim-riʹim minhum Yawmaʹiẓiñ shaʹnuñy yug̣neeh.

    For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.

  38. 38

    Wujoohuñy Yawmaʹiẓim musfirah,

    [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -

  39. 39

    Ḍaaḥikatum mustabshirah.

    Laughing, rejoicing at good news.

  40. 40

    وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ

    Wa-wujoohuñy Yawmaʹiẓin ʻalayhaa g̣abarah;

    And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.

  41. 41

    Tarhaq̣uhaa q̣atarah:

    Blackness will cover them.

  42. 42

    ʹUlaaaʹika humul kafaratul Fajarah.

    Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.
