  1. 1

    لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

    Laaa ʹuq̣simu bi-Yawmil Q̣iyaamah;

I swear by the Day of Resurrection

  2. 2

    Wa-laaa ʹuq̣simu bin-nafsil lawwaamah.

And I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection].

  3. 3

    ʹAyaḥsabul ʹiñsaanu ʹal-lan najmaʻa ʻiz̤̣aamah?

Does man think that We will not assemble his bones?

  4. 4

Ballaa Q̣aadireena ʻalaaa ʹan nusawwiya banaanah.

Yes. [We are] Able [even] to proportion his fingertips.

  5. 5

    Bal yureedul ʹIñsaanu liyafjura ʹamaamah.

But man desires to continue in sin.

  6. 6

    Yasʹalu ʹayyaana Yawmul Q̣IYAAMAH?

He asks, "When is the Day of Resurrection?"

  7. 7

    Faʹiẓaa bariq̣al baṣar,

    So when vision is dazzled

  8. 8

    Wa-khasafal Q̣amar.

    And the moon darkens

  9. 9

    Wa-jumiʻash shamsu wal-q̣amar,―

And the sun and the moon are joined,

  10. 10

    Yaq̣oolul ʹiñsaanu Yaw-maʹiẓin ʹaynal mafarr?

Man will say on that Day, "Where is the [place of] escape?"

  11. 11

    Kallaa laa- wazar!

    No! There is no refuge.

  12. 12

    ʹIlaa Rabbika Yawmaʹiẓinil mustaq̣arr.

To your Lord, that Day, is the [place of] permanence.

  13. 13

Yunabbaʹul ʹiñsaanu Yawmaʹiẓim bimaa q̣addama wa-ʹakhkhar.

Man will be informed that Day of what he sent ahead and kept back.

  14. 14

    Balil ʹiñsaanu ʻalaa nafsihee baṣeerah,

Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness,

  15. 15

    Wa-law ʹalq̣aa maʻaaẓeerah.

Even if he presents his excuses.

  16. 16

Laa- tuḥarrik bihee lisaanaka litaʻjala bih.

Move not your tongue with it, [O Muḥammad], to hasten with it [i.e., recitation of the Qur’ān].

  17. 17

    ʹInna ʻalaynaa jamʻahoo wa-q̣urʹaanah:

Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation.

  18. 18

    Faʹiẓaa q̣araʹnaahu fattabiʻ q̣ur-ʹaanah:

So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation.

  19. 19

    S̤umma ʹinna ʻalaynaa bayaanah:

Then upon Us is its clarification [to you].

  20. 20

    Kallaa bal tuḥibboonal ʻaajilah,―

No! But you [i.e., mankind] love the immediate

  21. 21

    Wa-taẓaroonal ʹAakhirah.

And leave [i.e., neglect] the Hereafter.

  22. 22

    Wujoohuñy Yawmaʹiẓin naaḍirah;―

[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant,

  23. 23

    إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ

    ʹIlaa Rabbihaa naaz̤̣irah;

    Looking at their Lord.

  24. 24

    Wa-wujoohuñy Yawmaʹiẓim baasirah,

And [some] faces, that Day, will be contorted,

  25. 25

    تَظُنُّ أَن يُفْعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٌ

    Taz̤̣unnu ʹañy yufʻala bihaa faaq̣irah;

Expecting that there will be done to them [something] backbreaking.

  26. 26

    Kallaaa ʹiẓaa balag̣atit taraaq̣ee,

No! When it [i.e., the soul] has reached the collar bones

  27. 27

    Wa-q̣eela man raaq̣?

And it is said, "Who will cure [him]?"

  28. 28

    وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ ٱلْفِرَاقُ

    Wa-z̤̣anna ʹannahul firaaq̣;

And he [i.e., the dying one] is certain that it is the [time of] separation

  29. 29

    Waltaffatis saaq̣u bissaaq̣:

And the leg is wound about the leg,

  30. 30

    ʹIlaa Rabbika Yawmaʹiẓinil masaaq̣!

To your Lord, that Day, will be the procession.

  31. 31

    Falaa Saddaq̣a wa-laa ṣallaa!―

And he [i.e., the disbeliever] had not believed, nor had he prayed.

  32. 32

    Wa-laakiñ kaẓẓaba wa-tawallaa!

But [instead], he denied and turned away.

  33. 33

    S̤umma ẓahaba ʹilaaa ʹahlihee yatamaṭṭaa!

And then he went to his people, swaggering [in pride].

  34. 34

    ʹAwlaa laka faʹawlaa!

    Woe to you, and woe!

  35. 35

    S̤umma ʹawlaa laka faʹawlaa!

Then woe to you, and woe!

  36. 36

    ʹAyaḥsabul ʹiñsaanu ʹañy yutraka sudaa?

Does man think that he will be left neglected?

  37. 37

ʹAlam yaku nuṭfatam mim maniyyiñy yumnaa?

Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted?

  38. 38

    S̤umma kaana ʻalaq̣atañ fakhalaq̣a fasawwaa.

Then he was a clinging clot, and [Allāh] created [his form] and proportioned [him]

  39. 39

    Fajaʻala minhuz zawjayniẓ ẓakara wal-ʹuñs̤aa.

And made of him two mates, the male and the female.

  40. 40

ʹAlaysa ẓaalika biq̣aadirin ʻalaaa ʹañy yuḥyiyal mawtaa?

Is not that [Creator] Able to give life to the dead?
