We have appointed only ˹stern˺ angels as wardens of the Fire. And We have made their number only as a test for the disbelievers, so that the People of the Book will be certain, and the believers will increase in faith, and neither the People of the Book nor the believers will have any doubts, and so that those ˹hypocrites˺ with sickness in their hearts and the disbelievers will argue, “What does Allah mean by such a number?” In this way Allah leaves whoever He wills to stray and guides whoever He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord except He. And this ˹description of Hell˺ is only a reminder to humanity.
Verse 74:32
Kallaa wal-Q̣amar,
But no! By the moon,
Verse 74:33

and the night as it retreats,

Waṣ-Ṣubḥi ʹiẓaaa ʹasfar,―
and the day as it breaks!

ʹInnahaa laʹiḥdal kubar,
Surely Hell is one of the mightiest catastrophes—
Verse 74:36
Naẓeeral lilbashar,―
a warning to humankind,
Verse 74:37

Kullu nafsim bimaa kasabat raheenah,
Every soul will be detained for what it has done,
Verse 74:39

ʹIllaaa ʹAṣḥaabal yameen.
except the people of the right,
Verse 74:40
Fee Jannaatiñy yatasaaaʹaloon
who will be in Gardens, asking one another
Verse 74:41
ʻAnil mujrimeen:
about the wicked ˹who will then be asked˺:
Verse 74:42
Maa- salakakum fee Saq̣ar?
“What has landed you in Hell?”
Verse 74:43
Q̣aaloo lam naku minal Muṣalleen;
They will reply, “We were not of those who prayed,
Verse 74:44
Wa-lam naku nuṭʻimul miskeen;
nor did we feed the poor.
Verse 74:45
Wa-kunnaa nakhooḍu maʻal khaaaʹiḍeen;
We used to indulge ˹in falsehood˺ along with others,
Verse 74:46
Wa-kunnaa nukaẓẓibu bi-Yawmid Deen
and deny the Day of Judgment,
Verse 74:47

until the inevitable came to us.”

Famaa tañfaʻuhum shafaaʻatush shaafiʻeen.
So the pleas of intercessors will be of no benefit to them.
Verse 74:49
Famaa lahum ʻanit taẓkirati muʻriḍeen,
Now, what is the matter with them that they are turning away from the reminder,
Verse 74:50
Kaʹannahum ḥumurum mustañfirah,
as if they were spooked zebras
Verse 74:51
Farrat miñ q̣aswarah!
fleeing from a lion?
Verse 74:52
Bal yureedu kullum riʹim minhum ʹañy yuʹtaa ṣuḥufam munashsharah!
In fact, each one of them wishes to be given a ˹personal˺ letter ˹from Allah˺ for all ˹to read˺.
Verse 74:53

But no! In fact, they do not fear the Hereafter.

Kallaaa ʹinnahoo taẓkirah:
Enough! Surely this ˹Quran˺ is a reminder.
Verse 74:55
Famañ shaaaʹa ẓakarah!
So let whoever wills be mindful of it.
Verse 74:56
Wa-maa yaẓkuroona ʹillaaa ʹañy yashaaaʹal laah: Huwa ʹAhlut taq̣waa wa-ʹAhlul Mag̣firah.
But they cannot do so unless Allah wills. He ˹alone˺ is worthy to be feared and entitled to forgive.
