بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Surah Al-Mutaffifin

Surah Al-Mutaffifin (Defrauding) is Surah 83 of the Holy Quran, a Meccan Surah with 36 verses, available here in English.

Verse 83:1

وَیْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِیْنَ ۟ۙ

Waylul lil-muṭaffifeen,―

Woe to the defrauders!

Verse 83:2

الَّذِیْنَ اِذَا اكْتَالُوْا عَلَی النَّاسِ یَسْتَوْفُوْنَ ۟ؗۖ

ʹAllaẓeena ʹiẓak taaloo ʻalan naasi yastawfoon,

Those who take full measure ˹when they buy˺ from people,

Verse 83:3

وَاِذَا كَالُوْهُمْ اَوْ وَّزَنُوْهُمْ یُخْسِرُوْنَ ۟ؕ

Wa-ʹiẓaa kaaloohum ʹaw Wazanoohum yukhsiroon.

but give less when they measure or weigh for buyers.

Verse 83:4

اَلَا یَظُنُّ اُولٰٓىِٕكَ اَنَّهُمْ مَّبْعُوْثُوْنَ ۟ۙ

ʹAlaa yaz̤̣unnu ʹulaaaʹika ʹannahum mabʻoos̤oon

Do such people not think that they will be resurrected

Verse 83:5

لِیَوْمٍ عَظِیْمٍ ۟ۙ

Li-Yawmin ʻAz̤̣eem.

for a tremendous Day—

Verse 83:6

یَّوْمَ یَقُوْمُ النَّاسُ لِرَبِّ الْعٰلَمِیْنَ ۟ؕ

Yawma yaq̣oomun naasu li-Rabbil ʻAalameen?

the Day ˹all˺ people will stand before the Lord of all worlds?

Verse 83:7

كَلَّاۤ اِنَّ كِتٰبَ الْفُجَّارِ لَفِیْ سِجِّیْنٍ ۟ؕ

Kallaaa ʹinna Kitaabal fujjaari lafee Sijjeen.

But no! The wicked are certainly bound for Sijjîn ˹in the depths of Hell˺—

Verse 83:8

وَمَاۤ اَدْرٰىكَ مَا سِجِّیْنٌ ۟ؕ

Wa-maaa ʹadraaka maa- Sijjeen?

and what will make you realize what Sijjîn is?—

Verse 83:9

كِتٰبٌ مَّرْقُوْمٌ ۟ؕ

Kitaabum marq̣oom.

a fate ˹already˺ sealed.

Verse 83:10

وَیْلٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِیْنَ ۟ۙ

Wayluñy Yawmaʹiẓil lil-mukaẓẓibeen―

Woe on that Day to the deniers—

Verse 83:11

الَّذِیْنَ یُكَذِّبُوْنَ بِیَوْمِ الدِّیْنِ ۟ؕ

ʹAllaẓeena yukaẓẓiboona bi-Yawmid Deen.

those who deny Judgment Day!

Verse 83:12

وَمَا یُكَذِّبُ بِهٖۤ اِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ اَثِیْمٍ ۟ۙ

Wa-maa yukaẓẓibu biheee ʹillaa kullu muʻtadin ʹas̤eem!

None would deny it except every evildoing transgressor.

Verse 83:13

اِذَا تُتْلٰی عَلَیْهِ اٰیٰتُنَا قَالَ اَسَاطِیْرُ الْاَوَّلِیْنَ ۟ؕ

ʹIẓaa tutlaa ʻalayhi ʹAayaatunaa q̣aala ʹAsaaṭeerul ʹAwwaleen!

Whenever Our revelations are recited to them, they say, “Ancient fables!”

Verse 83:14

كَلَّا بَلْ ٚ رَانَ عَلٰی قُلُوْبِهِمْ مَّا كَانُوْا یَكْسِبُوْنَ ۟

Kallaa bal; raana ʻalaa q̣uloobihim maa kaanoo yaksiboon!

But no! In fact, their hearts have been stained by all ˹the evil˺ they used to commit!

Verse 83:15

كَلَّاۤ اِنَّهُمْ عَنْ رَّبِّهِمْ یَوْمَىِٕذٍ لَّمَحْجُوْبُوْنَ ۟ؕ

Kallaaa ʹinnahum ʻar Rabbihim Yawmaʹiẓil lamaḥjooboon.

Undoubtedly, they will be sealed off from their Lord on that Day.

Verse 83:16

ثُمَّ اِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُوا الْجَحِیْمِ ۟ؕ

S̤umma ʹinnahum laṣaalul Jaḥeem.

Moreover, they will surely burn in Hell,

Verse 83:17

ثُمَّ یُقَالُ هٰذَا الَّذِیْ كُنْتُمْ بِهٖ تُكَذِّبُوْنَ ۟ؕ

S̤umma yuq̣aalu haaẓal laẓee kuñtum̃ bihee tukaẓẓiboon!

and then be told, “This is what you used to deny.”

Verse 83:18

كَلَّاۤ اِنَّ كِتٰبَ الْاَبْرَارِ لَفِیْ عِلِّیِّیْنَ ۟ؕ

Kallaaa ʹinna Kitaabal ʹAbraari lafee ʻIlliyyeen.

But no! The virtuous are certainly bound for ’Illiyûn ˹in elevated Gardens˺—

Verse 83:19

وَمَاۤ اَدْرٰىكَ مَا عِلِّیُّوْنَ ۟ؕ

Wa-maaa ʹadraaka maa- ʻIlliyyoon?

and what will make you realize what ’Illiyûn is?—

Verse 83:20

كِتٰبٌ مَّرْقُوْمٌ ۟ۙ

Kitaabum marq̣oom,

a fate ˹already˺ sealed,

Verse 83:21

یَّشْهَدُهُ الْمُقَرَّبُوْنَ ۟ؕ

Yashhaduhul Muq̣arraboon.

witnessed by those nearest ˹to Allah˺.

Verse 83:22

اِنَّ الْاَبْرَارَ لَفِیْ نَعِیْمٍ ۟ۙ

ʹInnal ʹAbraara lafee Naʻeem:

Surely the virtuous will be in bliss,

Verse 83:23

عَلَی الْاَرَآىِٕكِ یَنْظُرُوْنَ ۟ۙ

ʻAlal ʹaraaaʹiki yañz̤̣uroon:

˹seated˺ on ˹canopied˺ couches, gazing around.

Verse 83:24

تَعْرِفُ فِیْ وُجُوْهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ النَّعِیْمِ ۟ۚ

Taʻrifu fee wujoohihim naḍratan Naʻeem.

You will recognize on their faces the glow of delight.

Verse 83:25

یُسْقَوْنَ مِنْ رَّحِیْقٍ مَّخْتُوْمٍ ۟ۙ

Yusq̣awna mir raḥeeq̣im makhtoom:

They will be given a drink of sealed, pure wine,

Verse 83:26

خِتٰمُهٗ مِسْكٌ ؕ وَفِیْ ذٰلِكَ فَلْیَتَنَافَسِ الْمُتَنَافِسُوْنَ ۟ؕ

Khitaamuhoo misk: wa-fee ẓaalika falyatanaafasil mutanaafisoon:

whose last sip will smell like musk. So let whoever aspires to this strive ˹diligently˺.

Verse 83:27

وَمِزَاجُهٗ مِنْ تَسْنِیْمٍ ۟ۙ

Wa-mizaajuhoo miñ Tasneem,

And this drink’s flavour will come from Tasnîm—

Verse 83:28

عَیْنًا یَّشْرَبُ بِهَا الْمُقَرَّبُوْنَ ۟ؕ

ʻAynañy yashrabu bihal Muq̣arraboon.

a spring from which those nearest ˹to Allah˺ will drink.

Verse 83:29

اِنَّ الَّذِیْنَ اَجْرَمُوْا كَانُوْا مِنَ الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا یَضْحَكُوْنَ ۟ؗۖ

ʹInnal laẓeena ʹajramoo kaanoo minal laẓeena ʹaamanoo yaḍḥakoon,

Indeed, the wicked used to laugh at the believers,

Verse 83:30

وَاِذَا مَرُّوْا بِهِمْ یَتَغَامَزُوْنَ ۟ؗۖ

Wa-ʹiẓaa marroo bihim yatag̣aamazoon;

wink to one another whenever they passed by,

Verse 83:31

وَاِذَا انْقَلَبُوْۤا اِلٰۤی اَهْلِهِمُ انْقَلَبُوْا فَكِهِیْنَ ۟ؗۖ

Wa-ʹiẓañ q̣alabooo ʹilaaa ʹahlihimuñ q̣alaboo fakiheen;

and muse ˹over these exploits˺ upon returning to their own people.

Verse 83:32

وَاِذَا رَاَوْهُمْ قَالُوْۤا اِنَّ هٰۤؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّوْنَ ۟ۙ

Wa-ʹiẓaa raʹawhum q̣aalooo ʹinna haaaʹulaaaʹi laḍaaal-loon!

And when they saw the faithful, they would say, “These ˹people˺ are truly astray,”

Verse 83:33

وَمَاۤ اُرْسِلُوْا عَلَیْهِمْ حٰفِظِیْنَ ۟ؕ

Wa-maaa ʹursiloo ʹalayhim Ḥaafiz̤̣een.

even though they were not sent as keepers over the believers.

Verse 83:34

فَالْیَوْمَ الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ یَضْحَكُوْنَ ۟ۙ

Fal-Yawmal laẓeena ʹaamanoo minal kuffaari yuḍḥakoon:

But on that Day the believers will be laughing at the disbelievers,

Verse 83:35

عَلَی الْاَرَآىِٕكِ ۙ یَنْظُرُوْنَ ۟ؕ

ʻAlal ʹaraaaʹiki yañz̤̣uroon.

as they sit on ˹canopied˺ couches, looking on.

Verse 83:36

هَلْ ثُوِّبَ الْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوْا یَفْعَلُوْنَ ۟۠

Hal s̤uwwibal kuffaaru maa- kaanoo yafʻaloon?

˹The believers will be asked,˺ “Have the disbelievers ˹not˺ been paid back for what they used to do?”
