Surah Al-HijrBegins here at 15:1
-
15:1
ʹAlif-Laaam-Raa. Tilka ʹAayaatul Kitaabi wa-Q̣urʹaanim Mubeen.
Alif, Lām, Rā. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur’ān [i.e., recitation].
-
15:2
Rubamaa yawaddul laẓeena kafaroo law kaanoo Muslimeen.
Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims.
-
15:3
Ẓarhum yaʹkuloo wa-yatamattaʻoo wa-yulhihimul ʹamalu fasawfa yaʻlamoon.
Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know.
-
15:4
Wa-maaa ʹahlaknaa miñ q̣aryatin ʹillaa wa-lahaa kitaabum maʻloom.
And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree.
-
15:5
Maa- tasbiq̣u min ʹummatin ʹAjalahaa wa-maa yastaʹkhiroon.
No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter.
-
15:6
Wa-q̣aaloo yaaaʹayyuhal laẓee nuzzila ʻalayhiẓ Ẓikru ʹinnaka lamajnoon.
And they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad.
-
15:7
Law maa- taʹteenaa bil-malaaaʹikati ʹiñ kuñta minaṣ Ṣaadiq̣een?
Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?"
-
15:8
Maa- nunazzilul malaaaʹikata bil-Ḥaq̣q̣i illaa wa-maa kaanooo ʹiẓam muñz̤̣areen!
We do not send down the angels except with truth; and they [i.e., the disbelievers] would not then be reprieved.
-
15:9
ʹInnaa Naḥnu nazzalnaẓ Ẓikra wa-ʹinnaa lahoo la-Ḥaafiz̤̣oon.
Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., the Qur’ān], and indeed, We will be its guardian.
-
15:10
And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muḥammad], among the sects of the former peoples.
-
15:11
Wa-maa yaʹteehim mir rasoolin ʹillaa kaanoo bihee yastahziʹoon.
And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him.
-
15:12
Kaẓaalika naslukuhoo fee q̣uloobil mujrimeen―
Thus do We insert it [i.e., denial] into the hearts of the criminals.
-
15:13
Laa- yuʹminoona bihee wa-q̣ad khalat sunnatul ʹawwaleen.
They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples.
-
15:14
Wa-law fataḥnaa ʻalayhim baabam minas samaaaʹi faz̤̣alloo feehi yaʻrujoon.
And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend,
-
15:15
Laq̣aalooo ʹinnamaa sukkirat ʹabṣaarunaa bal naḥnu q̣awmum masḥooroon.
They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic."
-
15:16
Wa-laq̣ad jaʻalnaa fis samaaaʹi Buroojañw Wazayyannaahaa linnaaz̤̣ireen;
And We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers.
-
15:17
Wa-hafiz̤̣naahaa miñ kulli Shayṭaanir rajeem:
And We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allāh]
-
15:18
ʹIllaa manis taraq̣as samʻa faʹatbaʻahoo shihaabum mubeen.
Except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame.
-
15:19
Wal-ʹarḍa madadnaahaa wa-ʹalq̣aynaa feehaa rawaasiya wa-ʹambatnaa feehaa miñ kulli shayʹim mawzoon.
And the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing.
-
15:20
Wa-jaʻalnaa lakum feehaa maʻaayisha wa-mal lastum lahoo biraaziq̣een.
And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers.
-
15:21
Wa-ʹim miñ shayʹin ʹillaa ʻiñdanaa khazaaaʹinuh; wa-maa nunazziluhooo ʹillaa biq̣adarim maʻloom.
And there is not a thing but that with Us are its depositories, and We do not send it down except according to a known [i.e., specified] measure.
-
15:22
Wa-ʹarsalnar riyaaḥa lawaaq̣iḥa faʹañzalnaa minas samaaaʹi maaaʹañ faʹasq̣aynaakumooh: wa-maaa ʹañtum lahoo bikhaazineen.
And We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky and given you drink from it. And you are not its retainers.
-
15:23
Wa-ʹinnaa lanaḥnu nuḥyee wa-numeetu wa-naḥnul waaris̤oon.
And indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor.
-
15:24
Wa-laq̣ad ʻalimnal mustaq̣dimeena miñkum wa-laq̣ad ʻalimnal mustaʹkhireen.
And We have already known the preceding [generations] among you, and We have already known the later [ones to come].
-
15:25
Wa-ʹinna Rabbaka Huwa yaḥshuruhum: ʹinnahoo Ḥakeemun ʻAleem.
And indeed, your Lord will gather them; indeed, He is Wise and Knowing.
-
15:26
Wa-laq̣ad khalaq̣nal ʹiñsaana miñ ṣalṣaalim min ḥamaʹim masnoon:
And We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud.
-
15:27
Waljaaanna khalaq̣naahu miñ q̣ablu min naaris samoom.
And the jinn We created before from scorching fire.
-
15:28
Wa-ʹiẓ q̣aala Rabbuka lilmalaaaʹikati ʹinnee khaaliq̣um basharam miñ ṣalṣaalim min ḥamaʹim masnoon;
And [mention, O Muḥammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud.
-
15:29
Faʹiẓaa sawwaytuhoo wa-nafakhtu feehi mir Rooḥee faq̣aʻoo lahoo saajideen.
And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration."
-
15:30
Fasajadal malaaaʹikatu kulluhum ʹajmaʻoon.
So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely,
-
15:31
ʹIllaaa ʹIblees: ʹabaaa ʹañy yakoona maʻas Saajideen.
Except Iblees; he refused to be with those who prostrated.
-
15:32
Q̣aala yaaaʹIbleesu maa- laka ʹallaa takoona maʻas Saajideen?
[Allāh] said, "O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate?"
-
15:33
Q̣aala lam ʹakul liʹasjuda libasharin khalaq̣tahoo miñ ṣalṣaalim min ḥamaʹim masnoon.
He said, "Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from an altered black mud."
-
15:34
Q̣aala fakhruj minhaa faʹinnaka rajeem.
[Allāh] said, "Then depart from it, for indeed, you are expelled.
-
15:35
Wa-ʹinna ʻalaykal laʻnata ʹilaa Yawmid Deen.
And indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense."
-
15:36
Q̣aala Rabbi faʹañz̤̣irneee ʹilaa Yawmi yubʻas̤oon.
He said, "My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."
-
15:37
Q̣aala faʹinnaka minal muñz̤̣areen―
[Allāh] said, "So indeed, you are of those reprieved
-
15:38
ʹIlaa Yawmil Waq̣til Maʻloom.
Until the Day of the time well-known."
-
15:39
Q̣aala Rabbi bimaaa ʹag̣waytanee laʹuzayyinanna lahum fil ʹarḍi walaʹug̣wiyannahum ʹajmaʻeen,―
[Iblees] said, "My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them [i.e., mankind] on earth, and I will mislead them all
-
15:40
ʹIllaa ʻibaadaka minhumul Mukhlaṣeen.
Except, among them, Your chosen servants."
-
15:41
Q̣aala haaẓaa Ṣiraaṭun ʻalayya Mustaq̣eem.
[Allāh] said, "This is a path [of return] to Me [that is] straight.
-
15:42
ʹInna ʻibaadee laysa laka ʻalayhim sulṭaanun ʹillaa manit tabaʻaka minal g̣aaween.
Indeed, My servants - no authority will you have over them, except those who follow you of the deviators.
-
15:43
Wa-ʹinna Jahannama lamawʻiduhum ʹajmaʻeen!
And indeed, Hell is the promised place for them all.
-
15:44
Lahaa sabʻatu ʹAbwaab: likulli Baabim minhum juzʹum maq̣soom.
It has seven gates; for every gate is of them [i.e., Satan's followers] a portion designated."
-
15:45
ʹInnal Muttaq̣eena fee Jannaatiñw Waʻuyoon.
Indeed, the righteous will be within gardens and springs,
-
15:46
ʹUdkhuloohaa bi-Salaamin ʹAamineen.
[Having been told], "Enter it in peace, safe [and secure]."
-
15:47
Wanazaʻnaa maa- fee ṣudoorihim min g̣illin ʹikhwaanan ʻalaa sururim mutaq̣aabileen.
And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, [so they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other.
-
15:48
Laa- yamassuhum feehaa naṣabuñw wamaa hum minhaa bimukhrajeen.
No fatigue will touch them therein, nor from it will they [ever] be removed.
-
15:49
Nabbiʹ ʻibaadeee ʹanneee ʹan al-G̣afoorur Raḥeem;
[O Muḥammad], inform My servants that it is I who am the Forgiving, the Merciful,
-
15:50
Wa-ʹanna ʻAẓaabee huwal ʻAẓaabul ʹaleem.
And that it is My punishment which is the painful punishment.
-
15:51
Wa-nabbiʹhum ʻañ ḍayfi ʹIbraaheem.
And inform them about the guests of Abraham,
-
15:52
ʹIẓ dakhaloo ʻalayhi faq̣aaloo Salaamaa! Q̣aala ʹinnaa miñkum wajiloon!
When they entered upon him and said, "Peace." [Abraham] said, "Indeed, we are fearful [i.e., apprehensive] of you."
-
15:53
Q̣aaloo laa- tawjal ʹinnaa nubashshiruka big̣ulaamin ʻaleem.
[The angels] said, "Fear not. Indeed, we give you good tidings of a learned boy."
-
15:54
Q̣aala ʹabashshartumoonee ʻalaaa ʹam massaniyal kibaru fabima tubashshiroon?
He said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you inform?"
-
15:55
Q̣aaloo bashsharnaaka bilḥaq̣q̣i falaa takum minal q̣aaniṭeen!
They said, "We have given you good tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing."
-
15:56
Q̣aala wa-mañy yaq̣naṭu mir Raḥmati Rabbiheee ʹillaḍ ḍaaalloon?
He said, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except for those astray?"
-
15:57
Q̣aala famaa khaṭbukum ʹayyuhal Mursaloon?
[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"
-
15:58
Q̣aalooo ʹinnaaa ʹursilnaaa ʹilaa q̣awmim mujrimeen.
They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals,
-
15:59
ʹIllaa ʹAala Looṭ: ʹinnaa lamunajjoohum ʹajmaʻeen,―
Except the family of Lot; indeed, we will save them all
-
15:60
ʹIllam raʹatahoo q̣addarnaaa ʹinnahaa laminal g̣aabireen.
Except his wife." We [i.e., Allāh] decreed that she is of those who remain behind.
-
15:61
Falammaa jaaaʹa ʹAala Looṭinil mursaloon.
And when the messengers came to the family of Lot,
-
15:62
Q̣aala ʹinnakum q̣awmum muñkaroon.
He said, "Indeed, you are people unknown."
-
15:63
Q̣aaloo bal jiʹnaaka bimaa kaanoo feehi yamtaroon.
They said, "But we have come to you with that about which they were disputing,
-
15:64
Wa-ʹataynaaka bil-Ḥaq̣q̣i wa-ʹinnaa laṣaadiq̣oon.
And we have come to you with truth, and indeed, we are truthful.
-
15:65
Faʹasri biʹahlika biq̣iṭʻim minal layli wattabiʻ adbaarahum wa-laa yaltafit miñkum ʹaḥaduñw wamḍoo ḥays̤u tuʹmaroon.
So set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them and let not anyone among you look back and continue on to where you are commanded."
-
15:66
Wa-q̣aḍaynaaa ʹilayhi ẓaalikal ʹamra ʹanna daabira haaaʹulaaaʹi maq̣ṭooʻum muṣbiḥeen.
And We conveyed to him [the decree] of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by early morning.
-
15:67
Wa-jaaaʹa ʹahlul Madeenati yastabshiroon.
And the people of the city came rejoicing.
-
15:68
Q̣aala ʹinna haaaʹulaaaʹi ḍayfee falaa tafḍaḥoon:
[Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me.
-
15:69
Wattaq̣ul laaha wa-laa tukhzoon.
And fear Allāh and do not disgrace me."
-
15:70
Q̣aalooo ʹawalam nanhaka ʻanil ʻaalameen?
They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?"
-
15:71
Q̣aala haaaʹulaaaʹi banaateee ʹiñ kuñtum faaʻileen.
[Lot] said, "These are my daughters - if you would be doers [of lawful marriage]."
-
15:72
Laʻamruka ʹinnahum lafee sakratihim yaʻmahoon.
By your life, [O Muḥammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly.
-
15:73
Faʹakhaẓathumuṣ Ṣayḥatu mushriq̣een.
So the shriek seized them at sunrise.

15:74
Fajaʻalnaa ʻaaliyahaa saafilahaa wa-ʹamṭarnaa ʻalayhim ḥijaaratam miñ sijjeel.
And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.
-
15:75
ʹInna fee ẓaalika laʹAayaatil lilmutawassimeen.
Indeed in that are signs for those who discern.
-
15:76
Wa-ʹinnahaa labisabeelim muq̣eem.
And indeed, they [i.e., those cities] are [situated] on an established road.
-
15:77
ʹInna fee ẓaalika laʹAayatal lil-Muʹmineen.
Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.
-
15:78
Wa-ʹiñ kaana ʹAṣḥaabul ʹAykati laz̤̣aalimeen.
And the companions of the thicket [i.e., the people of Madyan] were [also] wrongdoers,
-
15:79
Fañtaq̣amnaa minhum. Wa-ʹinnahumaa labiʹimaamim mubeen.
So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway.
-
15:80
Wa-laq̣ad kaẓẓaba ʻAṣḥaabul ḤIJRIL mursaleen:
And certainly did the companions of al-Ḥijr [i.e., the Thamūd] deny the messengers.
-
15:81
Wa-ʹaataynaahum ʹAayaatinaa fakaanoo ʻanhaa muʻriḍeen.
And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away.
-
15:82
Wa-kaanoo yanḥitoona minal jibaali buyootan ʹaamineen.
And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure.
-
15:83
Faʹakhaẓathumuṣ Ṣayḥatu muṣbiḥeen.
But the shriek seized them at early morning,
-
15:84
Famaaa ʹag̣naa ʻanhum maa kaanoo yaksiboon!
So nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn.
-
15:85
Wa-maa khalaq̣nas samaawaati wal-ʹarḍa wa-maa baynahumaaa ʹillaa bilḥaq̣q̣. Wa-ʹinnas Saaʻata laʹaatiyatuñ faṣfaḥiṣ ṣafḥal jameel.
And We have not created the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth. And indeed, the Hour is coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness.
-
15:86
ʹInna Rabbaka Huwal Khallaaq̣ul ʻAleem.
Indeed, your Lord - He is the Knowing Creator.
-
15:87
Wa-laq̣ad ʹaataynaaka Sabʻam minal mas̤aanee wal-Q̣urʹaanal ʻAz̤̣eem.
And We have certainly given you, [O Muḥammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur’ān.
-
15:88
Laa- tamuddanna ʻaynayka ʹilaa maa- mattaʻnaa biheee ʹazwaajam minhum wa-laa taḥzan ʻalayhim wakhfiḍ janaaḥaka lil-Muʹmineen.
Do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of them [i.e., the disbelievers], and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing [i.e., show kindness] to the believers.
-
15:89
Wa-q̣ul ʹinneee ʹanan naẓeerul mubeen,―
And say, "Indeed, I am the clear warner" -
-
15:90
Kamaaa ʹañzalnaa ʻalal muq̣tasimeen,―
Just as We had revealed [scriptures] to the separators
-
15:91
ʹAllaẓeena jaʻalul Q̣urʹaana ʻi-ḍeen.
Who have made the Qur’ān into portions.
-
15:92
Fawa-Rabbika lanasʹalannahum ʹajmaʻeen.
So by your Lord, We will surely question them all
-
15:93
ʻAmmaa kaanoo yaʻmaloon.
About what they used to do.
-
15:94
Faṣdaʻ bimaa tuʹmaru wa-ʹaʻriḍ ʻanil mushrikeen.
Then declare what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists.
-
15:95
ʹInnaa kafaynaakal mustahziʹeen.
Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers
-
15:96
Who make [equal] with Allāh another deity. But they are going to know.
-
15:97
Wa-laq̣ad naʻlamu ʹannaka yaḍeeq̣u ṣadruka bimaa yaq̣ooloon.
And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say.
-
15:98
Fasabbiḥ biḥamdi Rabbika wa-kum minas Saajideen.
So exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [to Him].
-
15:99
And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty [i.e., death].
Surah An-NahlBegins here at 16:1
-
16:1
ʹAtaaa ʹAmrul laahi falaa tastaʻjilooh: Subḥaanahoo wa-taʻaalaa ʻammaa yushrikoon.

-
16:2

He created man from a sperm-drop; then at once he is a clear adversary.
-
16:5
Wal-ʹanʻaama khalaq̣ahaa lakum feehaa difʹuñw wamanaafiʻu wa-minhaa taʹkuloon.
And the grazing livestock He has created for you; in them is warmth and [numerous] benefits, and from them you eat.
-
16:6
Wa-lakum feehaa jamaalun ḥeena tureeḥoona waḥeena tasraḥoon.
And for you in them is [the enjoyment of] beauty when you bring them in [for the evening] and when you send them out [to pasture].
-
16:7
Wa-taḥmilu ʹas̤q̣aalakum ʹilaa baladil lam takoonoo baalig̣eehi ʹillaa bishiq̣q̣il ʹañfus: ʹinna Rabbakum la-Raʹoofur Raḥeem.
And they carry your loads to a land you could not have reached except with difficulty to yourselves. Indeed, your Lord is Kind and Merciful.
-
16:8
Walkhayla wal-big̣aala wal-ḥameera litarkaboohaa wa-zeenah; wa-yakhluq̣u maa laa- taʻlamoon.
And [He created] the horses, mules and donkeys for you to ride and [as] adornment. And He creates that which you do not know.
-
16:9
Wa-ʻalal laahi q̣aṣdus Sabeeli wa-minhaa jaaaʹir: wa-law shaaaʹa lahadaakum ʹajmaʻeen.
And upon Allāh is the direction of the [right] way, and among them [i.e., the various paths] are those deviating. And if He willed, He could have guided you all.
-
16:10
Huwal laẓeee ʹañzala minas samaaaʹi maaaʹal lakum minhu sharaabuñw waminhu shajaruñ feehi tuseemoon.
It is He who sends down rain from the sky; from it is drink and from it is foliage in which you pasture [animals].
-
16:11
Yumbitu lakum̃ bihiz zarʻa wazzaytoona wannakheela wal-ʹaʻnaaba wa-miñ kullis̤ s̤amaraat: ʹinna fee ẓaalika laʹAayatal liq̣awmiñy yatafakkaroon.

Wa-maa ẓaraʹa lakum fil ʹarḍi mukhtalifan ʹalwaanuh: ʹinna fee ẓaalika laʹaayatal liq̣awmiñy yaẓẓakkaroon.
And [He has subjected] whatever He multiplied for you on the earth of varying colors. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who remember.
-
16:14
Wa-Huwal laẓee sakhkharal baḥra litaʹkuloo minhu laḥmañ ṭariyyañw watastakhrijoo minhu ḥilyatañ talbasoonahaa: wa-taral fulka mawaakhira feehi wa-litabtag̣oo miñ faḍlihee wa-laʻallakum tashkuroon.
And it is He who subjected the sea for you to eat from it tender meat and to extract from it ornaments which you wear. And you see the ships plowing through it, and [He subjected it] that you may seek of His bounty; and perhaps you will be grateful.
-
16:15
Wa-ʹalq̣aa fil ʹarḍi rawaasiya ʹañ tameeda bikum wa-ʹanhaarañw wasubulal laʻallakum tahtadoon:
And He has cast into the earth firmly set mountains, lest it shift with you, and [made] rivers and roads, that you may be guided,
-
16:16
Wa-ʻalaamaat; wa-binnajmi hum yahtadoon.
And landmarks. And by the stars they are [also] guided.
-
16:17
ʹAfamañy yakhluq̣u kamal laa yakhluq̣? ʹAfalaa taẓakkaroon?
Then is He who creates like one who does not create? So will you not be reminded?
-
16:18
Wa-ʹiñ taʻuddoo niʻmatal laahi laa- tuḥṣoohaa: ʹinnal laaha la-G̣afoorur Raḥeem.
And if you should count the favors of Allāh, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
-
16:19
Wallaahu yaʻlamu maa- tusirroona wa-maa tuʻlinoon.
And Allāh knows what you conceal and what you declare.
-
16:20
Wallaẓeena yadʻoona miñ doonil laahi laa- yakhluq̣oona shayʹañw wahum yukhlaq̣oon.
And those they invoke other than Allāh create nothing, and they [themselves] are created.
-
16:21
ʹAmwaatun g̣ayru ʹaḥyaaaʹ: wa-maa yashʻuroona ʹayyaana yubʻas̤oon.
They are [in fact] dead, not alive, and they do not perceive when they will be resurrected.
-
16:22
ʹIlaahukum ʹIlaahuñw Waaḥid: fallaẓeena laa- yuʹminoona bil-ʹAakhirati q̣uloobuhum muñkiratuñw wahum mustakbiroon.
Your god is one God. But those who do not believe in the Hereafter - their hearts are disapproving, and they are arrogant.
-
16:23
Laa- jarama ʹannal laaha yaʻlamu maa- yusirroona wa-maa yuʻlinoon: ʹinnahoo laa- yuḥibbul mustakbireen.
Assuredly, Allāh knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, He does not like the arrogant.
-
16:24
Wa-ʹiẓaa q̣eela lahum maaẓaaa ʹañzala Rabbukum q̣aalooo ʹasaaṭeerul ʹawwaleen?
And when it is said to them, "What has your Lord sent down?" they say, "Legends of the former peoples,"
-
16:25
Liyaḥmilooo ʹawzaarahum kaamilatañy Yawmal Q̣iyaamati wa-min ʹawzaaril laẓeena yuḍilloonahum̃ big̣ayri ʻilm. ʹAlaa saaaʹa maa- yaziroon!
That they may bear their own burdens [i.e., sins] in full on the Day of Resurrection and some of the burdens of those whom they misguide without [i.e., by lack of] knowledge. Unquestionably, evil is that which they bear.
-
16:26
Q̣ad makaral laẓeena miñ q̣ablihim faʹatal laahu bunyaanahum minal q̣awaaʻidi fakharra ʻalayhimus saq̣fu miñ fawq̣ihim wa-ʹataahumul ʻaẓaabu min ḥays̤u laa- yashʻuroon.
Those before them had already plotted, but Allāh came at [i.e., uprooted] their building from the foundations, so the roof fell upon them from above them, and the punishment came to them from where they did not perceive.
-
16:27
S̤umma Yawmal Q̣iyaamati yukhzeehim wa-yaq̣oolu ʹayna shurakaaaʹiyal laẓeena kuñtum tushaaaq̣q̣oona feehim? Q̣aalal laẓeena ʹootul ʻilma ʹinnal khizyal yawma wassoooʹa ʻalal kaafireen,―
Then on the Day of Resurrection He will disgrace them and say, "Where are My 'partners' for whom you used to oppose [the believers]?" Those who were given knowledge will say, "Indeed disgrace, this Day, and evil are upon the disbelievers" -
-
16:28
ʹAllaẓeena tatawaffaahumul malaaaʹikatu z̤̣aalimeee ʹañfusihim. Faʹalq̣awus salama maa- kunnaa naʻmalu miñ soooʹ. Balaaa ʹInnal laaha ʻAleemum bimaa kuntum taʻmaloon.
The ones whom the angels take in death [while] wronging themselves, and [who] then offer submission, [saying], "We were not doing any evil." But, yes! Indeed, Allāh is Knowing of what you used to do.
-
16:29
Fadkhulooo ʹabwaaba Jahannama khaalideena feeha. Falabiʹsa mas̤wal mutakabbireen.
So enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and how wretched is the residence of the arrogant.
-
16:30
Wa-q̣eela lillaẓeenat taq̣aw maaẓaaa ʹañzala Rabbukum? Q̣aaloo khayraa. Lillaẓeena ʹaḥsanoo fee haaẓihid dunyaa ḥasanah. Wa-la-Daarul ʹAakhirati khayr. Wa-laniʻma Daarul Muttaq̣een,―
And it will be said to those who feared Allāh, "What did your Lord send down?" They will say, "[That which is] good." For those who do good in this world is good; and the home of the Hereafter is better. And how excellent is the home of the righteous -

16:31
Jannaatu ʻAdniñy yadkhuloonahaa tajree miñ taḥtihal ʹanhaaru lahum feehaa maa- yashaaaʹoon: kaẓaalika yajzil laahul Muttaq̣een,―
Gardens of perpetual residence, which they will enter, beneath which rivers flow. They will have therein whatever they wish. Thus does Allāh reward the righteous -
-
16:32
ʹAllaẓeena tatawaffaahumul malaaaʹikatu ṭayyibeena yaq̣ooloona Salaamun ʻalaykumud khulul Jannata bimaa kuñtum taʻmaloon.
The ones whom the angels take in death, [being] good and pure; [the angels] will say, "Peace be upon you. Enter Paradise for what you used to do."
-
16:33
Hal yañz̤̣uroona ʹillaaa ʹañ taʹtiyahumul malaaaʹikatu ʹaw yaʹtiya ʹAmru Rabbik? Kaẓaalika faʻalal laẓeena miñ q̣ablihim. Wa-maa z̤̣alamahumul laahu wa-laakiñ kaanooo ʹañfusahum yaz̤̣limoon.
Do they [i.e., the disbelievers] await except that the angels should come to them or there comes the command of your Lord? Thus did those do before them. And Allāh wronged them not, but they had been wronging themselves.
-
16:34
Faʹaṣaabahum sayyiʹaatu maa- ʻamiloo waḥaaq̣a bihim maa kaanoo bihee yastahziʹoon.
So they were struck by the evil consequences of what they did and were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.
-
16:35
Wa-q̣aalal laẓeena ʹashrakoo law shaaaʹal laahu maa- ʻabadnaa miñ doonihee miñ shayʹin naḥnu wa-laaa ʹaabaaaʹunaa wa-laa ḥarramnaa miñ doonihee miñ shayyʹ. Kaẓaalika faʻalal laẓeena miñ q̣ablihim Fahal ʻalar rusuli ʹillal Balaag̣ul Mubeen?
And those who associate others with Allāh say, "If Allāh had willed, we would not have worshipped anything other than Him, neither we nor our fathers, nor would we have forbidden anything through other than Him." Thus did those do before them. So is there upon the messengers except [the duty of] clear notification?
-
16:36
Wa-laq̣ad baʻas̤naa fee kulli ʹummatir rasoolan ʹaniʻ budul laaha wajtanibuṭ Ṭaag̣oot; faminhum man hadal laahu wa-minhum man ḥaq̣q̣at ʻalayhiḍ ḍalaalah. Faseeroo fil ʹarḍi fañz̤̣uroo kayfa kaana ʻaaq̣ibatul mukaẓẓibeen.
And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship Allāh and avoid ṭāghūt." And among them were those whom Allāh guided, and among them were those upon whom error was [deservedly] decreed. So proceed [i.e., travel] through the earth and observe how was the end of the deniers.
-
16:37
ʹIñ taḥriṣ ʻalaa hudaahum faʹinnal laaha laa- yahdee mañy yuḍillu wa-maa lahum min naaṣireen.
[Even] if you should strive for their guidance, [O Muḥammad], indeed, Allāh does not guide those He sends astray, and they will have no helpers.
-
16:38
Wa-ʹaq̣samoo billaahi jahda ʹaymaanihim laa- yabʻas̤ul laahu mañy yamoot: balaa waʻdan ʻalayhi ḥaq̣q̣añw walaakinna ʹaks̤aran naasi laa- yaʻlamoon.
And they swear by Allāh their strongest oaths [that] Allāh will not resurrect one who dies. But yes - [it is] a true promise [binding] upon Him, but most of the people do not know.
-
16:39
Liyubayyina lahumul laẓee yakhtalifoona feehi wa-liyaʻlamal laẓeena kafarooo ʹannahum kaanoo kaaẓibeen.
[It is] so He will make clear to them [the truth of] that wherein they differ and so those who have disbelieved may know that they were liars.
-
16:40
ʹInnamaa q̣awlunaa lishayʹin ʹiẓaaa ʹaradnaahu ʹan naq̣oola lahoo Kuñ Fayakoon.
Indeed, Our word to a thing when We intend it is but that We say to it, "Be," and it is.
-
16:41
Wallaẓeena haajaroo fil laahi mim baʻdi maa- z̤̣ulimoo lanubawwiʹannahum fid dunyaa ḥasanah; wa-laʹajrul ʹAakhirati ʹakbar. Law kaanoo yaʻlamoon!
And those who emigrated for [the cause of] Allāh after they had been wronged - We will surely settle them in this world in a good place; but the reward of the Hereafter is greater, if only they could know.
-
16:42
ʹAllaẓeena ṣabaroo wa-ʻalaa Rabbihim yatawakkaloon.
[They are] those who endured patiently and upon their Lord relied.
-
16:43
Wa-maaa ʹarsalnaa miñ q̣ablika ʹillaa rijaalan nooḥeee ʹilayhim, fasʹalooo ʹahlaẓ Ẓikri ʹiñ kuñtum laa- taʻlamoon,―
And We sent not before you except men to whom We revealed [Our message]. So ask the people of the message [i.e., former scriptures] if you do not know.
-
16:44
Bil-Bayyinaati waz-Zubur; wa-ʹañzalnaaa ʹilaykaẓ Ẓikra litubayyina linnaasi maa- nuzzila ʹilayhim wa-laʻallahum yatafakkaroon.
[We sent them] with clear proofs and written ordinances. And We revealed to you the message [i.e., the Qur’ān] that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them and that they might give thought.
-
16:45
ʹA-faʹaminal laẓeena makarus sayyiʹaati ʹañy yakhsifal laahu bihimul ʹarḍa ʹaw yaʹtiyahumul ʻaẓaabu min ḥays̤u laa- yashʻuroon?
Then, do those who have planned evil deeds feel secure that Allāh will not cause the earth to swallow them or that the punishment will not come upon them from where they do not perceive?
-
16:46
ʹAw yaʹkhuẓahum fee taq̣allubihim famaa hum̃ bimuʻjizeen?―
Or that He would not seize them during their [usual] activity, and they could not cause failure [i.e., escape from Him]?
-
16:47
ʹAw yaʹkhuẓahum ʻalaa takhawwuf: faʹinna Rabbakum la-Raʹoofur Raḥeem.
Or that He would not seize them gradually [in a state of dread]? But indeed, your Lord is Kind and Merciful.
-
16:48
ʹA-walam yaraw ʹilaa maa- khalaq̣al laahu miñ shayʹiñy yatafayyaʹu z̤̣ilaaluhoo ʻanil yameeni washshamaaaʹili sujjadal lillaahi wa-hum daakhiroon?
Have they not considered what things Allāh has created? Their shadows incline to the right and to the left, prostrating to Allāh, while they [i.e., those creations] are humble.
-
16:49
Wa-lillaahi yasjudu maa- fis samaawaati wa-maa fil ʹarḍi miñ daaabbatiñw walmalaaaʹikatu wa-hum laa- yastakbiroon,
And to Allāh prostrates whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth of creatures, and the angels [as well], and they are not arrogant.
-
16:50
Yakhaafoona Rabbahum miñ fawq̣ihim wayafʻaloona maa- yuʹmaroon.
They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded.
-
16:51
Waq̣aalal laahu laa- tattakhiẓooo ʹilaahaynis̤ nayn: ʹinnamaa Huwa ʹIlaahuñw Waaḥid: faʹiyyaaya farhaboon.
And Allāh has said, "Do not take for yourselves two deities. He [i.e., Allāh] is but one God, so fear only Me."
-
16:52
Walahoo maa- fis samaawaati wal-ʹarḍi wa-lahud Deenu waaṣibaa: ʹafag̣ayral laahi tattaq̣oon?
And to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth, and to Him is [due] worship constantly. Then is it other than Allāh that you fear?
-
16:53
Wa-maa bikum min niʻmatiñ faminal laahi s̤umma ʹiẓaa massakumuḍ ḍurru faʹilayhi tajʹaroon;
And whatever you have of favor - it is from Allāh. Then when adversity touches you, to Him you cry for help.
-
16:54
S̤umma ʹiẓaa kashafaḍ ḍurra ʻañkum ʹiẓaa fareeq̣um miñkum̃ bi-Rabbihim yushrikoon.
Then when He removes the adversity from you, at once a party of you associates others with their Lord
-
16:55
Liyakfuroo bimaaa ʹaataynaahum! Fatamattaʻoo; fasawfa taʻlamoon!
So they will deny what We have given them. Then enjoy yourselves, for you are going to know.
-
16:56
Wa-yajʻaloona limaa laa- yaʻlamoona naṣeebam mimmaa razaq̣naahum! Tallaahi latusʹalunna ʻammaa kuñtum taftaroon.
And they assign to what they do not know [i.e., false deities] a portion of that which We have provided them. By Allāh, you will surely be questioned about what you used to invent.
-
16:57
Wa-yajʻaloona lillaahil banaati Subḥaanahoo wa-lahum maa yashtahoon!
And they attribute to Allāh daughters - exalted is He - and for them is what they desire [i.e., sons].
-
16:58
Wa-ʹiẓaa bushshira ʹaḥaduhum̃ bil-ʹuñs̤aa z̤̣alla wajhuhoo muswaddañw wahuwa kaz̤̣eem!
And when one of them is informed of [the birth of] a female, his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.
-
16:59
Yatawaaraa minal q̣awmi miñ soooʹi maa- bushshira bih! ʹA-yumsikuhoo ʻalaa hoonin ʹam yadussuhoo fit turaab? ʹAlaa saaaʹa maa- yaḥkumoon?
He hides himself from the people because of the ill of which he has been informed. Should he keep it in humiliation or bury it in the ground? Unquestionably, evil is what they decide.
-
16:60
Lillaẓeena laa- yuʹminoona bil-ʹAakhirati mas̤alus sawʹ: wa-lillaahil Mas̤alul ʹAʻlaa: wa-Huwal ʻAzeezul Ḥakeem.
For those who do not believe in the Hereafter is the description [i.e., an attribute] of evil; and for Allāh is the highest attribute. And He is Exalted in Might, the Wise.
-
16:61
Wa-law yuʹaakhiẓul laahun naasa biz̤̣ulmihim maa taraka ʻalayhaa miñ daaabbatiñw walaakiñy yuʹakhkhiruhum ʹilaaa ʹajalim musammaa: faʹiẓaa jaaaʹa ʹajaluhum laa- yastaʹkhiroona saaʻatañw walaa yastaq̣dimoon.
And if Allāh were to impose blame on the people for their wrongdoing, He would not have left upon it [i.e., the earth] any creature, but He defers them for a specified term. And when their term has come, they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it].
-
16:62
Wa-yajʻaloona lillaahi maa- yakrahoona wa-taṣifu ʹalsinatuhumul kaẓiba ʹanna lahumul ḥusnaa: laa- jarama ʹanna lahumun Naara wa-ʹannahum mufraṭoon!
And they attribute to Allāh that which they dislike [i.e., daughters], and their tongues assert the lie that they will have the best [from Him]. Assuredly, they will have the Fire, and they will be [therein] neglected.
-
16:63
Tallaahi laq̣ad ʹarsalnaaa ʹilaaa ʹumamim miñ q̣ablika fazayyana lahumush Shayṭaanu ʹaʻmaalahum fahuwa waliyyuhumul yawma wa-lahum ʻaẓaabun ʹaleem.
By Allāh, We did certainly send [messengers] to nations before you, but Satan made their deeds attractive to them. And he is their [i.e., the disbelievers] ally today [as well], and they will have a painful punishment.
-
16:64
Wa-maaa ʹañzalnaa ʻalaykal Kitaaba ʹillaa litubayyina lahumul laẓikh talafoo feehi wa-hudañw waraḥmatal liq̣awmiñy yuʹminoon.
And We have not revealed to you the Book, [O Muḥammad], except for you to make clear to them that wherein they have differed and as guidance and mercy for a people who believe.
-
16:65
Wallaahu ʹañzala minas samaaaʹi maaaʹañ faʹaḥyaa bihil ʹarḍa baʻda mawtihaa: ʹinna fee ẓaalika laʹAayatal liq̣awmiñy yasmaʻoon.
And Allāh has sent down rain from the sky and given life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who listen.
-
16:66
Wa-ʹinna lakum fil ʹanʻaami laʻIbrah. Nusq̣eekum mimmaa fee buṭoonihee mim bayni fars̤iñw wadamil labanan khaaliṣañ saaaʹig̣allish shaaribeen.
And indeed, for you in grazing livestock is a lesson. We give you drink from what is in their bellies - between excretion and blood - pure milk, palatable to drinkers.
-
16:67
Wa-miñ s̤amaraatin nakheeli wal-ʹaʻnaabi tattakhiẓoona minhu sakarañw warizq̣an ḥasanaa: ʹinna fee ẓaalika laʹAayatal liq̣awmiñy yaʻq̣iloon.
And from the fruits of the palm trees and grapevines you take intoxicant and good provision. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who reason.
-
16:68
Wa-ʹawḥaa Rabbuka ʹilan NAḤLI ʹanit takhiẓee minal jibaali buyootañw waminash shajari wa-mimmaa yaʻrishoon;
And your Lord inspired to the bee, "Take for yourself among the mountains, houses [i.e., hives], and among the trees and [in] that which they construct.
-
16:69
S̤umma kulee miñ kullis̤ s̤amaraati faslukee subula Rabbiki ẓululaa. Yakhruju mim buṭoonihaa sharaabum mukhtalifun ʹalwaanuhoo feehi shifaaaʹul linnaas: ʹinna fee ẓaalika laʹAayatal liq̣awmiñy yatafakkaroon.
Then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you]." There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought.
-
16:70
Wallaahu khalaq̣akum s̤umma yatawaffaakum wa-miñkum mañy yuraddu ʹilaaa ʹarẓalil ʻumuri likay laa- yaʻlama baʻda ʻilmiñ shayʹaa: ʹinnal laaha ʻAleemuñ Q̣adeer.
And Allāh created you; then He will take you in death. And among you is he who is reversed to the most decrepit [old] age so that he will not know, after [having had] knowledge, a thing. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing and Competent.
-
16:71
Wallaahu faḍḍala baʻḍakum ʻalaa baʻḍiñ fir rizq̣: famal laẓeena fuḍḍiloo biraaaddee rizq̣ihim ʻalaa maa- malakat ʹaymaanuhum fahum feehi sawaaaʹ. ʹAfabiniʻmatil laahi yajḥadoon?
And Allāh has favored some of you over others in provision. But those who were favored [i.e., given more] would not hand over their provision to those whom their right hands possess [i.e., slaves] so they would be equal to them therein. Then is it the favor of Allāh they reject?
-
16:72
Wallaahu jaʻala lakum min ʹañfusikum ʹazwaajañw Wajaʻala lakum min ʹazwaajikum baneena waḥafadatañw warazaq̣akum minaṭ ṭayyibaat: ʹafabilbaaṭili yuʹminoona wa-biniʻmatil laahi hum yakfuroon?―
And Allāh has made for you from yourselves mates and has made for you from your mates sons and grandchildren and has provided for you from the good things. Then in falsehood do they believe and in the favor of Allāh they disbelieve?
-
16:73
Wa-yaʻbudoona miñ doonil laahi maa laa- yamliku lahum rizq̣am minas samaawaati wal-ʹarḍi shayʹañw walaa yastaṭeeʻoon?
And they worship besides Allāh that which does not possess for them [the power of] provision from the heavens and the earth at all, and [in fact], they are unable.
-
16:74
Falaa taḍriboo lillaahil ʹams̤aal: ʹinnal laaha yaʻlamu waʹañtum laa- taʻlamoon.
So do not assert similarities to Allāh. Indeed, Allāh knows and you do not know.
-
16:75
Ḍarabal laahu Mas̤alan ʻabdam mamlookal laa yaq̣diru ʻalaa shayʹiñw wamar razaq̣naahu minnaa rizq̣an ḥasanañ fahuwa yuñfiq̣u minhu sirrañw wajahraa: hal yastawoon? ʹAl-Ḥamdu lillaah. Bal ʹaks̤aruhum laa- yaʻlamoon.
Allāh presents an example: a slave [who is] owned and unable to do a thing and he to whom We have provided from Us good provision, so he spends from it secretly and publicly. Can they be equal? Praise to Allāh! But most of them do not know.
-
16:76
Wa-ḍarabal laahu Mas̤alar rajulayni ʹaḥaduhumaaa ʹabkamu laa- yaq̣diru ʻalaa shayʹiñw wa huwa kallun ʻalaa mawlaahu ʹaynamaa yuwajjihhu laa- yaʹti bikhayr: hal yastawee huwa wa-mañy yaʹmuru bilʻadli wa-huwa ʻalaa Ṣiraaṭim Mustaq̣eem?
And Allāh presents an example of two men, one of them dumb and unable to do a thing, while he is a burden to his guardian. Wherever he directs him, he brings no good. Is he equal to one who commands justice, while he is on a straight path?
-
16:77
Wa-lillaahi g̣aybus samaawaati wal-ʹarḍ. Wa-maaa ʹamrus Saaʻati ʹillaa kalamḥil baṣari ʹaw huwa ʹaq̣rab: ʹinnal laaha ʻalaa kulli shayʹiñ Q̣adeer.
And to Allāh belongs the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth. And the command for the Hour is not but as a glance of the eye or even nearer. Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.
-
16:78
Wallaahu ʹakhrajakum mim buṭooni ʹummahaatikum laa- taʻlamoona shayʹañw wajaʻala lakumus samʻa wal-ʹabṣaara wal-ʹafʹidata laʻallakum tashkuroon.
And Allāh has extracted you from the wombs of your mothers not knowing a thing, and He made for you hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect] that perhaps you would be grateful.
-
16:79
ʹAlam yaraw ʹilaṭ ṭayri musakhkharaatiñ fee jawwis samaaaʹ? Maa- yumsikuhunna ʹillal laah. ʹInna fee ẓaalika laʹAayaatil liq̣awmiñy yuʹminoon.
Do they not see the birds controlled in the atmosphere of the sky? None holds them up except Allāh. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.
-
16:80
Wallaahu jaʻala lakum mim buyootikum sakanañw wajaʻala lakum miñ juloodil ʹanʻaami buyootañ tastakhiffoonahaa yawma z̤̣aʻnikum wa-yawma ʻiq̣aamatikum wa-min aṣwaafihaa wa-ʹawbaarihaa wa-ʹashʻaarihaaa ʹas̤aas̤añw Wamataaʻan ʹilaa ḥeen.
And Allāh has made for you from your homes a place of rest and made for you from the hides of the animals tents which you find light on your day of travel and your day of encampment; and from their wool, fur and hair is furnishing and enjoyment [i.e., provision] for a time.
-
16:81
Wallaahu jaʻala lakum mimmaa khalaq̣a z̤̣ilaalañw wajaʻala lakum minal jibaali ʹaknaanañw Wajaʻala lakum saraabeela taq̣eekumul ḥarra wa-saraabeela taq̣eekum̃ baʹsakum.
And Allāh has made for you, from that which He has created, shadows [i.e., shade] and has made for you from the mountains, shelters and has made for you garments which protect you from the heat and garments [i.e., coats of mail] which protect you from your [enemy in] battle. Thus does He complete His favor upon you that you might submit [to Him].
-
16:82
Faʹiñ tawallaw faʹinnamaa ʻalaykal Balaag̣ul Mubeen.
But if they turn away, [O Muḥammad] - then only upon you is [responsibility for] clear notification.
-
16:83
They recognize the favor of Allāh; then they deny it. And most of them are disbelievers.
-
16:84
Wa-yawma nabʻas̤u miñ kulli ʹummatiñ Shaheedañ s̤umma laa- yuʹẓanu lillaẓeena kafaroo wa-laa hum yustaʻtaboon.
And [mention] the Day when We will resurrect from every nation a witness [i.e., their prophet]. Then it will not be permitted to the disbelievers [to apologize or make excuses], nor will they be asked to appease [Allāh].
-
16:85
Wa-ʹiẓaa ra ʹallaẓeena z̤̣alamul ʻAẓaaba falaa yukhaffafu ʻanhum wa-laa hum yuñz̤̣aroon.
And when those who wronged see the punishment, it will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved.
-
16:86
Wa-ʹiẓaa ra ʹallaẓeena ʹashrakoo shurakaaaʹahum q̣aaloo Rabbanaa haaaʹulaaaʹi shurakaaaʹunal laẓeena kunnaa nadʻoo miñ doonik. Faʹalq̣aw ʹilayhimul q̣awla ʹinnakum lakaaẓiboon!
And when those who associated others with Allāh see their "partners," they will say, "Our Lord, these are our partners [to You] whom we used to invoke [in worship] besides You." But they will throw at them the statement, "Indeed, you are liars."
-
16:87
Wa-ʹalq̣aw ʹilal laahi yawmaʹiẓinis salama wa-ḍalla ʻanhum maa kaanoo yaftaroon.
And they will impart to Allāh that Day [their] submission, and lost from them is what they used to invent.
-
16:88
ʹAllaẓeena kafaroo waṣaddoo ʻañ Sabeelil laahi zidnaahum ʻAẓaabañ fawq̣al ʻaẓaabi bimaa kaanoo yufsidoon.
Those who disbelieved and averted [others] from the way of Allāh - We will increase them in punishment over [their] punishment for what corruption they were causing.
-
16:89
Wa-yawma nabʻas̤u fee kulli ʹummatiñ shaheedan ʻalayhim min ʹañfusihim wa-jiʹnaa bika shaheedan ʻalaa haaaʹulaaaʹ. Wa-nazzalnaa ʻalaykal Kitaaba tibyaanal likulli shayʹiñw wa-Hudañw wa-Raḥmatañw wa-Bushraa lil-Muslimeen.
And [mention] the Day when We will resurrect among every nation a witness over them from themselves [i.e., their prophet]. And We will bring you, [O Muḥammad], as a witness over these [i.e., your nation]. And We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things and as guidance and mercy and good tidings for the Muslims.
-
16:90
ʹInnal laaha yaʹmuru bil-ʻadli wal-ʹiḥsaani wa-ʹeetaaaʹi ẓil q̣urbaa wa-yanhaa ʻanil faḥshaaaʹi wal-muñkari walbag̣yi: yaʻi-Z̤̣ukum laʻallakum taẓakkaroon.
Indeed, Allāh orders justice and good conduct and giving [help] to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
-
16:91
Wa-ʹawfoo biʻAhdil laahi ʹiẓaa ʻaahattum wa-laa tañq̣uḍul ʹaymaana baʻda tawkeedihaa wa-q̣ad jaʻaltumul laaha ʻalaykum kafeelaa: ʹinnal laaha yaʻlamu maa- tafʻaloon.
And fulfill the covenant of Allāh when you have taken it, [O believers], and do not break oaths after their confirmation while you have made Allāh, over you, a security [i.e., witness]. Indeed, Allāh knows what you do.
-
16:92
Wa-laa takoonoo kallatee naq̣aḍat g̣azlahaa mim baʻdi q̣uwwatin ʹañkaas̤aa. Tattakhiẓoona ʹaymaanakum dakhalam baynakum ʹañ takoona ʹummatun hiya ʹarbaa min ʹummah; ʹinnamaa yablookumul laahu bih; wa-la-yubayyinanna lakum Yawmal Q̣iyaamati maa- kuñtum feehi takhtalifoon.
And do not be like she who untwisted her spun thread after it was strong [by] taking your oaths as [means of] deceit between you because one community is more plentiful [in number or wealth] than another community. Allāh only tries you thereby. And He will surely make clear to you on the Day of Resurrection that over which you used to differ.
-
16:93
Wa-law shaaaʹal laahu lajaʻalakum ʹummatañw waaḥidatañw walaakiñy yuḍillu mañy yashaaaʹu wa-yahdee mañy yashaaaʹ: wa-latusʹalunna ʻammaa kuñtum taʻmaloon.
And if Allāh had willed, He could have made you [of] one religion, but He sends astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And you will surely be questioned about what you used to do.
-
16:94
Wa-laa tattakhiẓooo ʹaymaanakum dakhalam baynakum fatazilla q̣adamum baʻda s̤ubootihaa wa-taẓooq̣us soooʹa bimaa ṣadattum ʻañ Sabeelil laahi walakum ʻaẓaabun ʻaz̤̣eem.
And do not take your oaths as [means of] deceit between you, lest a foot slip after it was [once] firm, and you would taste evil [in this world] for what [people] you diverted from the way of Allāh, and you would have [in the Hereafter] a great punishment.
-
16:95
Wa-laa tashtaroo biʻAhdil laahi s̤amanañ q̣aleelaa: ʹinnamaa ʻiñdal laahi huwa khayrul lakum ʹiñ kuñtum taʻlamoon.
And do not exchange the covenant of Allāh for a small price. Indeed, what is with Allāh is best for you, if only you could know.
-
16:96
Maa- ʻiñdakum yañfadu wa-maa ʻiñdal laahi baaq̣. Wa-lanajziyannal laẓeena ṣabarooo ʹajrahum̃ biʹaḥsani maa- kaanoo yaʻmaloon.
Whatever you have will end, but what Allāh has is lasting. And We will surely give those who were patient their reward according to the best of what they used to do.
-
16:97
Man ʻamila ṣaaliḥam miñ ẓakarin ʹaw ʹuñs̤aa wa-huwa Muʹminuñ falanuḥyiyannahoo Ḥayaatañ Ṭayyibah, wa-lanajzi-yannahum ʹajrahum̃ biʹaḥsani maa- kaanoo yaʻmaloon.
Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.
-
16:98
Faʹiẓaa q̣araʹtal Q̣urʹaana fastaʻiẓ billaahi minash Shayṭaanir Rajeem.
So when you recite the Qur’ān, [first] seek refuge in Allāh from Satan, the expelled [from His mercy].
-
16:99
ʹInnahoo laysa lahoo sulṭaanun ʻalal laẓeena ʹaamanoo wa-ʻalaa Rabbihim yatawakkaloon.
Indeed, there is for him no authority over those who have believed and rely upon their Lord.
-
16:100
ʹInnamaa sulṭaanuhoo ʻalal laẓeena yatawallawnahoo wallaẓeena hum̃ bihee mushrikoon.
His authority is only over those who take him as an ally and those who through him associate others with Allāh.
-
16:101
Wa-ʹiẓaa baddalnaaa ʹaayatam makaana ʹaayatiñw wal-laahu ʹAʻlamu bimaa yunazzilu q̣aalooo ʹinnamaaa ʹañta muftar: bal ʹaks̤aruhum laa- yaʻlamoon.
And when We substitute a verse in place of a verse - and Allāh is most knowing of what He sends down - they say, "You, [O Muḥammad], are but an inventor [of lies]." But most of them do not know.
-
16:102
Q̣ul nazzalahoo Rooḥul Q̣udusi mir Rabbika bil-Ḥaq̣q̣i liyus̤abbital laẓeena ʹaamanoo Bushraa wa-Hudañwwa lil-Muslimeen.
Say, [O Muḥammad], "The Pure Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] has brought it down from your Lord in truth to make firm those who believe and as guidance and good tidings to the Muslims."
-
16:103
Wa-laq̣ad naʻlamu ʹannahum yaq̣ooloona ʹinnamaa yuʻallimuhoo bashar. Lisaanul laẓee yulḥidoona ʹilayhi ʹaʻjamiyyuñw Wahaaẓaa lisaanun ʻArabiyyum mubeen.
And We certainly know that they say, "It is only a human being who teaches him [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)]." The tongue of the one they refer to is foreign, and this [recitation, i.e., Qur’ān] is [in] a clear Arabic language.

16:104
ʹInnal lazeena laa- yuʹminoona biʹaayaatil lahi laa- yahdeehimul laahu wa-lahum ʻaẓaabun ʹaleem.
Indeed, those who do not believe in the verses of Allāh - Allāh will not guide them, and for them is a painful punishment.
-
16:105
ʹInnamaa yaftaril kaẓibal laẓeena laa- yuʹminoona biʹaayaatil laahi wa-ʹulaaaʹika humul kaaẓiboon.
They only invent falsehood who do not believe in the verses of Allāh, and it is those who are the liars.
-
16:106
Mañ kafara billaahi mim baʻdi ʹeemaaniheee ʹillaa man ʹukriha wa-q̣albuhoo muṭmaʹinnum bil-ʹEemaani wa-laakim mañ sharaḥa bilkufri ṣadrañ faʻalayhim g̣aḍabum minal laahi wa-lahum ʻaẓaabun ʻaz̤̣eem.
Whoever disbelieves in [i.e., denies] Allāh after his belief... except for one who is forced [to renounce his religion] while his heart is secure in faith. But those who [willingly] open their breasts to disbelief, upon them is wrath from Allāh, and for them is a great punishment;
-
16:107
Ẓaalika biʹannahumus taḥabbul ḥayaatad dunyaa ʻalal ʹAakhirati waʹannal laaha laa- yahdil Q̣awmal kaafireen.
That is because they preferred the worldly life over the Hereafter and that Allāh does not guide the disbelieving people.
-
16:108
ʹUlaaaʹikal laẓeena ṭabaʻal laahu ʻalaa q̣uloobihim wa-samʻihim wa-ʹabṣaarihim wa-ʹulaaaʹika humul G̣aafiloon.
Those are the ones over whose hearts and hearing and vision Allāh has sealed, and it is those who are the heedless.
-
16:109
Laa- jarama ʹannahum fil ʹaakhirati humul khaasiroon.
Assuredly, it is they, in the Hereafter, who will be the losers.
-
16:110
S̤umma ʹinna Rabbaka lillaẓeena haajaroo mim baʻdi maa- futinoo s̤umma jaahadoo waṣabarooo ʹinna Rabbaka mim baʻdihaa G̣afoorur Raḥeem.
Then, indeed your Lord, to those who emigrated after they had been compelled [to say words of disbelief] and thereafter fought [for the cause of Allāh] and were patient - indeed, your Lord, after that, is Forgiving and Merciful
-
16:111
Yawma taʹtee kullu nafsiñ tujaadilu ʻan nafsihaa wa-tuwaffaa kullu nafsim maa ʻamilat Wahum laa- yuz̤̣lamoon.
On the Day when every soul will come disputing [i.e., pleading] for itself, and every soul will be fully compensated for what it did, and they will not be wronged [i.e., treated unjustly].
-
16:112
Wa-ḍarabal laahu Mas̤alañ q̣aryatañ kaanat ʹaaminatam muṭmaʹinnatañy yaʹteehaa rizq̣uhaa rag̣adam miñ kulli makaaniñ fakafarat biʹanʻumil laahi faʹaẓaaq̣ahal laahu libaasal jooʻi walkhawfi bimaa kaanoo yaṣnaʻoon.
And Allāh presents an example: a city [i.e., Makkah] which was safe and secure, its provision coming to it in abundance from every location, but it denied the favors of Allāh. So Allāh made it taste the envelopment of hunger and fear for what they had been doing.
-
16:113
Wa-laq̣ad jaaaʹahum Rasoolum minhum fakaẓẓaboohu faʹakhaẓahumul ʻaẓaabu wa-hum z̤̣aalimoon.
And there had certainly come to them a Messenger from among themselves, but they denied him; so punishment overtook them while they were wrongdoers.
-
16:114
Fakuloo mimmaa razaq̣akumul laahu Ḥalaalañ Ṭayyibaa; washkuroo niʻmatal laahi ʹiñ kuñtum ʹiyyaahu taʻbudoon.
Then eat of what Allāh has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And be grateful for the favor of Allāh, if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.
-
16:115
ʹInnamaa ḥarrama ʻalaykumul maytata waddama wa-laḥmal khiñzeeri wa-maaa ʹuhilla lig̣ayril laahi bih. Famaniḍ ṭurra g̣ayra baag̣iñw walaa ʻaadiñ faʹinnal laaha G̣afoorur Raḥeem.
He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allāh. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit] - then indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
-
16:116
wa-laa taq̣ooloo limaa taṣifu ʹalsinatukumul kaẓiba haaẓaa ḥalaaluñw wahaaẓaa ḥaraamul litaftaroo ʻalal laahil kaẓib. ʹInnal laẓeena yaftaroona ʻalal laahil kaẓiba laa- yufliḥoon.
And do not say about what your tongues assert of untruth, "This is lawful and this is unlawful," to invent falsehood about Allāh. Indeed, those who invent falsehood about Allāh will not succeed.
-
16:117
Mataaʻuñ q̣aleel; wa-lahum ʻaẓaabun ʹaleem.
[It is but] a brief enjoyment, and they will have a painful punishment.
-
16:118
Wa-ʻalal laẓeena haadoo ḥarramnaa maa- q̣aṣaṣnaa ʻalayka miñ q̣abl: wa-maa z̤̣alamnaahum wa-laakiñ kaanooo ʹañfusahum yaz̤̣limoon.
And to those who are Jews We have prohibited that which We related to you before. And We did not wrong them [thereby], but they were wronging themselves.
-
16:119
S̤umma ʹinna Rabbaka lillaẓeena ʻamilus soooʹa bijahaalatiñ s̤umma taaboo mim baʻdi ẓaalika wa-ʹaṣlaḥooo ʹinna Rabbaka mim baʻdihaa la-G̣afoorur Raḥeem.
Then, indeed your Lord, to those who have done wrong out of ignorance and then repent after that and correct themselves - indeed, your Lord, thereafter, is Forgiving and Merciful.
-
16:120
ʹInna ʹIbraaheema kaana ʹummatañ q̣aanital lillaahi ḥaneefaa: wa-lam yaku minal mushrikeen:
Indeed, Abraham was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allāh, inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allāh.
-
16:121
Shaakiral liʹanʻumih: ʹijtabaahu wa-hadaahu ʹilaa Ṣiraatim Mustaq̣eem.
[He was] grateful for His favors. He [i.e., Allāh] chose him and guided him to a straight path.
-
16:122
Wa-ʹaataynaahu fid dunyaa Ḥasanah: wa-ʹinnahoo fil ʹAakhirati laminaṣ Ṣaaliḥeen.
And We gave him good in this world, and indeed, in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous.
-
16:123
S̤umma awḥaynaaa ʹilayka ʹanit tabiʻ Millata ʹIbraaheema Ḥaneefaa, wa-maa kaana minal mushrikeen.
Then We revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], to follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of those who associate with Allāh.
-
16:124
Innamaa juʻilas Sabtu ʻalal laẓeenakh talafoo feeh: wa-ʹinna Rabbaka layaḥkumu baynahum Yawmal Q̣iyaamati feemaa kaanoo feehi yakhtalifoon.
The sabbath was only appointed for those who differed over it. And indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.
-
16:125
ʹUdʻu ʹilaa sabeeli Rabbika bilḥikmati walmawʻiz̤̣atil ḥasanati wa-jaadilhum̃ billatee hiya ʹaḥsan: ʹInna Rabbaka Huwa ʹAʻlamu bimañ ḍalla ʻañ Sabeelihee wa-Huwa ʹaʻlamu bil-Muhtadeen.
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided.
-
16:126
Wa-ʹin ʻaaq̣abtum faʻaaq̣iboo bimis̤li maa- ʻooq̣ibtum̃ bih: wa-laʹiñ ṣabartum lahuwa khayrul liṣ-Ṣaabireen.
And if you punish [an enemy, O believers], punish with an equivalent of that with which you were harmed. But if you are patient - it is better for those who are patient.
-
16:127
Waṣbir wa-maa ṣabruka ʹillaa billaahi wa-laa taḥzan ʻalayhim wa-laa taku fee ḍayq̣im mimmaa yamkuroon.
And be patient, [O Muḥammad], and your patience is not but through Allāh. And do not grieve over them and do not be in distress over what they conspire.
-
16:128
Indeed, Allāh is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good.
