Surah Al-Muzzammil

Verse 73:1

یٰۤاَیُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُ ۟ۙ

Yaaaʹayyuhal MUZZAMMIL!

O you wrapped ˹in your clothes˺!

Verse 73:2

قُمِ الَّیْلَ اِلَّا قَلِیْلًا ۟ۙ

Q̣umil layla ʹillaa q̣aleelaa,―

Stand all night ˹in prayer˺ except a little—

Verse 73:3

نِّصْفَهٗۤ اَوِ انْقُصْ مِنْهُ قَلِیْلًا ۟ۙ

Niṣfahooo ʹawiñ Q̣uṣ minhu q̣aleelaa,

˹pray˺ half the night, or a little less,

Verse 73:4

اَوْ زِدْ عَلَیْهِ وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْاٰنَ تَرْتِیْلًا ۟ؕ

ʹAw zid ʻalayhi wa-rattilil Q̣urʹaana tarteelaa.

or a little more—and recite the Quran ˹properly˺ in a measured way.

Verse 73:5

اِنَّا سَنُلْقِیْ عَلَیْكَ قَوْلًا ثَقِیْلًا ۟

ʹInnaa sanulq̣ee ʻalayka Q̣awlañ s̤aq̣eelaa.

˹For˺ We will soon send upon you a weighty revelation.

Verse 73:6

اِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ الَّیْلِ هِیَ اَشَدُّ وَطْاً وَّاَقْوَمُ قِیْلًا ۟ؕ

ʹInna naashiʹatal layli hiya ʹashaddu waṭ-ʹañw waʹaq̣wamu Q̣eelaa.

Indeed, worship in the night is more impactful and suitable for recitation.

Verse 73:7

اِنَّ لَكَ فِی النَّهَارِ سَبْحًا طَوِیْلًا ۟ؕ

ʹInna laka fin nahaari sabḥañ ṭaweelaa.

For during the day you are over-occupied ˹with worldly duties˺.

Verse 73:8

وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلْ اِلَیْهِ تَبْتِیْلًا ۟ؕ

Waẓkuris ma Rabbika wa-tabattal ʹilayhi tabteelaa.

˹Always˺ remember the Name of your Lord, and devote yourself to Him wholeheartedly.

Verse 73:9

رَبُّ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ فَاتَّخِذْهُ وَكِیْلًا ۟

Rabbul Mashriq̣i wal-Mag̣ribi Laaa ʹilaaha ʹillaa Huwa fattakhiẓhu Wakeelaa.

˹He is the˺ Lord of the east and the west. There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him, so take Him ˹alone˺ as a Trustee of Affairs.

Verse 73:10

وَاصْبِرْ عَلٰی مَا یَقُوْلُوْنَ وَاهْجُرْهُمْ هَجْرًا جَمِیْلًا ۟

Waṣbir ʻalaa maa- yaq̣ooloona wahjurhum hajrañ jameelaa.

Be patient ˹O Prophet˺ with what they say, and depart from them courteously.

Verse 73:11

وَذَرْنِیْ وَالْمُكَذِّبِیْنَ اُولِی النَّعْمَةِ وَمَهِّلْهُمْ قَلِیْلًا ۟

Wa-ẓarnee walmukaẓẓibeena ʹulin naʻmati wa-mahhilhum q̣aleelaa.

And leave to Me the deniers—the people of luxury—and bear with them for a little while.

Verse 73:12

اِنَّ لَدَیْنَاۤ اَنْكَالًا وَّجَحِیْمًا ۟ۙ

ʹInna ladaynaaa ʹañkaalañw Wa-Jaḥeemaa,

˹For˺ We certainly have shackles, a ˹raging˺ Fire,

Verse 73:13

وَّطَعَامًا ذَا غُصَّةٍ وَّعَذَابًا اَلِیْمًا ۟ۗ

Wa-Ṭaʻaamañ ẓaa g̣uṣṣatiñw waʻAẓaaban ʹaleemaa.

choking food, and a painful punishment ˹in store for them˺

Verse 73:14

یَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ الْاَرْضُ وَالْجِبَالُ وَكَانَتِ الْجِبَالُ كَثِیْبًا مَّهِیْلًا ۟

Yawma tarjuful ʹarḍu wal-Jibaalu wa-kaanatil jibaalu kas̤eebam maheelaa.

on the Day the earth and mountains will shake ˹violently˺, and mountains will be ˹reduced to˺ dunes of shifting sand.

Verse 73:15

اِنَّاۤ اَرْسَلْنَاۤ اِلَیْكُمْ رَسُوْلًا ۙ۬ شَاهِدًا عَلَیْكُمْ كَمَاۤ اَرْسَلْنَاۤ اِلٰی فِرْعَوْنَ رَسُوْلًا ۟ؕ

ʹInnaaa ʹarsalnaaa ʹilaykum Rasoolañ shaahidan ʻalaykum kamaaa ʹarsalnaaa ʹilaa Firʻawna Rasoolaa.

Indeed, We have sent to you a messenger as a witness over you, just as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh.

Verse 73:16

فَعَصٰی فِرْعَوْنُ الرَّسُوْلَ فَاَخَذْنٰهُ اَخْذًا وَّبِیْلًا ۟

Faʻaṣaa Firʻawnur Rasoola faʹakhaẓnaahu ʹakhẓañw Wabeelaa.

But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a stern grip.

Verse 73:17

فَكَیْفَ تَتَّقُوْنَ اِنْ كَفَرْتُمْ یَوْمًا یَّجْعَلُ الْوِلْدَانَ شِیْبَا ۟ۗۖ

Fakayfa tattaq̣oona ʹiñ kafartum Yawmañy yajʻalul wildaana sheebaa―

If you ˹pagans˺ persist in disbelief, then how will you guard yourselves against ˹the horrors of˺ a Day which will turn children’s hair grey?

Verse 73:18

لسَّمَآءُ مُنْفَطِرٌ بِهٖ ؕ كَانَ وَعْدُهٗ مَفْعُوْلًا ۟

ʹAssamaaaʹu muñfaṭirum bih? Kaana waʻduhoo mafʻoolaa.

It will ˹even˺ cause the sky to split apart. His promise ˹of judgment˺ must be fulfilled.

Verse 73:19

اِنَّ هٰذِهٖ تَذْكِرَةٌ ۚ فَمَنْ شَآءَ اتَّخَذَ اِلٰی رَبِّهٖ سَبِیْلًا ۟۠

ʹInna haaẓihee Taẓkirah: famañ shaaaʹat takhaẓa ʹilaa Rabbihee Sabeelaa!

Surely this is a reminder. So let whoever wills take the ˹Right˺ Way to their Lord.

Verse 73:20

اِنَّ رَبَّكَ یَعْلَمُ اَنَّكَ تَقُوْمُ اَدْنٰی مِنْ  الَّیْلِ وَنِصْفَهٗ وَثُلُثَهٗ وَطَآىِٕفَةٌ مِّنَ الَّذِیْنَ مَعَكَ ؕ وَاللّٰهُ یُقَدِّرُ الَّیْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ ؕ عَلِمَ اَنْ لَّنْ تُحْصُوْهُ فَتَابَ عَلَیْكُمْ فَاقْرَءُوْا مَا تَیَسَّرَ مِنَ الْقُرْاٰنِ ؕ عَلِمَ اَنْ سَیَكُوْنُ مِنْكُمْ مَّرْضٰی ۙ وَاٰخَرُوْنَ یَضْرِبُوْنَ فِی الْاَرْضِ یَبْتَغُوْنَ مِنْ فَضْلِ اللّٰهِ ۙ وَاٰخَرُوْنَ یُقَاتِلُوْنَ فِیْ سَبِیْلِ اللّٰهِ ۖؗ فَاقْرَءُوْا مَا تَیَسَّرَ مِنْهُ ۙ وَاَقِیْمُوا الصَّلٰوةَ وَاٰتُوا الزَّكٰوةَ وَاَقْرِضُوا اللّٰهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا ؕ وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوْا لِاَنْفُسِكُمْ مِّنْ خَیْرٍ تَجِدُوْهُ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ هُوَ خَیْرًا وَّاَعْظَمَ اَجْرًا ؕ وَاسْتَغْفِرُوا اللّٰهَ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ غَفُوْرٌ رَّحِیْمٌ ۟۠

ʹInna Rabbaka yaʻlamu ʹannaka taq̣oomu ʹadnaa miñ s̤ulus̤ayil layli wa-niṣfahoo wa-s̤ulus̤ahoo wa-ṭaaaʹifatum minal laẓeena maʻak. Wal-laahu yuq̣addirul layla wannahaar. ʻAlima ʹal lañ tuḥṣoohu fataaba ʻalaykum faq̣raʹoo maa- tayassara minal Q̣urʹaan. ʻAlima ʹañ sayakoonu miñkum marḍaa wa-ʹaakharoona yaḍriboona fil ʹarḍi yabtag̣oona miñ Faḍlil laahi wa-ʹaakharoona yuq̣aatiloona fee Sabeelil laah. Faq̣raʹoo maa- tayassara minhu wa-ʹaq̣eemuṣ Ṣalaata wa-ʹaatuz Zakaata wa-ʹaq̣riḍul laaha Q̣arḍan Ḥasanaa. Wa-maa tuq̣addimoo liʹañfusikum min khayriñ tajidoohu ʻiñdal laahi huwa khyrañw waʹAʻz̤̣ama ʹAjraa. Wastag̣firul laah: ʹinnal laaha G̣afoorur Raḥeem.

Surely your Lord knows that you ˹O Prophet˺ stand ˹in prayer˺ for nearly two-thirds of the night, or ˹sometimes˺ half of it, or a third, as do some of those with you. Allah ˹alone˺ keeps a ˹precise˺ measure of the day and night. He knows that you ˹believers˺ are unable to endure this, and has turned to you in mercy. So recite ˹in prayer˺ whatever you can from the Quran. He knows that some of you will be sick, some will be travelling throughout the land seeking Allah’s bounty, and some fighting in the cause of Allah. So recite whatever you can from it. And ˹continue to˺ perform ˹regular˺ prayers, pay alms-tax, and lend to Allah a good loan. Whatever good you send forth for yourselves, you will find it with Allah far better and more rewarding. And seek Allah’s forgiveness. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
