Surah Ar-Rahman
Surah Ar-Rahman (The Beneficent) is Surah 55 of the Holy Quran, a Medinan Surah with 78 verses, available here in English.
Verse 55:1
اَلرَّحْمٰنُ ۟ۙ
ʹAR-RAḤ-MAAN.
The Most Compassionate
Verse 55:2
عَلَّمَ الْقُرْاٰنَ ۟ؕ
ʻAllamal Q̣urʹaan.
taught the Quran,
Verse 55:3
خَلَقَ الْاِنْسَانَ ۟ۙ
Khalaq̣al ʹiñsaan.
created humanity,
Verse 55:4
عَلَّمَهُ الْبَیَانَ ۟
ʻAllamahul bayaan.
˹and˺ taught them speech.
Verse 55:5
اَلشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ بِحُسْبَانٍ ۟ۙ
ʹAshshamsu walq̣amaru biḥusbaan;
The sun and the moon ˹travel˺ with precision.
Verse 55:6
وَّالنَّجْمُ وَالشَّجَرُ یَسْجُدٰنِ ۟
Wannajmu washshajaru yasjudaan.
The stars and the trees bow down ˹in submission˺.
Verse 55:7
وَالسَّمَآءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ الْمِیْزَانَ ۟ۙ
Was-Samaaaʹa rafaʻahaa wa-waḍaʻal Meezaan
As for the sky, He raised it ˹high˺, and set the balance ˹of justice˺
Verse 55:8
اَلَّا تَطْغَوْا فِی الْمِیْزَانِ ۟
ʹAllaa taṭg̣aw fil meezaan.
so that you do not defraud the scales.
Verse 55:9
وَاَقِیْمُوا الْوَزْنَ بِالْقِسْطِ وَلَا تُخْسِرُوا الْمِیْزَانَ ۟
Wa-ʹaq̣eemul wazna bilq̣isṭi wa-laa tukhsirul meezaan.
Weigh with justice, and do not give short measure.
Verse 55:10
وَالْاَرْضَ وَضَعَهَا لِلْاَنَامِ ۟ۙ
Wal-ʹarḍa waḍaʻahaa lilʹanaam:
He laid out the earth for all beings.
Verse 55:11
فِیْهَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَّالنَّخْلُ ذَاتُ الْاَكْمَامِ ۟ۖ
Feehaa faakihatuñw wan-nakhlu ẓaatul ʹakmaam;
In it are fruit, palm trees with date stalks,
Verse 55:12
وَالْحَبُّ ذُو الْعَصْفِ وَالرَّیْحَانُ ۟ۚ
Walḥabbu ẓul ʻaṣfi war-rayḥaan.
and grain with husks, and aromatic plants.
Verse 55:13
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you ˹humans and jinn˺ both deny?
Verse 55:14
خَلَقَ الْاِنْسَانَ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ كَالْفَخَّارِ ۟ۙ
Khalaq̣al ʹiñsaana miñ ṣalṣaaliñ kalfakhkhaar,
He created humankind from ˹sounding˺ clay like pottery,
Verse 55:15
وَخَلَقَ الْجَآنَّ مِنْ مَّارِجٍ مِّنْ نَّارٍ ۟ۚ
Wa-khalaq̣al Jaaanna mim maarijim min Naar:
and created jinn from a ˹smokeless˺ flame of fire.
Verse 55:16
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:17
رَبُّ الْمَشْرِقَیْنِ وَرَبُّ الْمَغْرِبَیْنِ ۟ۚ
Rabbul Mashriq̣ayni wa-rabbul Mag̣ribayn:
˹He is˺ Lord of the two easts and the two wests.
Verse 55:18
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:19
مَرَجَ الْبَحْرَیْنِ یَلْتَقِیٰنِ ۟ۙ
Marajal baḥrayni yaltaq̣iyaan:
He merges the two bodies of ˹fresh and salt˺ water,
Verse 55:20
بَیْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخٌ لَّا یَبْغِیٰنِ ۟ۚ
Baynahumaa Barzakhul laa yabg̣iyaan:
yet between them is a barrier they never cross.
Verse 55:21
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:22
یَخْرُجُ مِنْهُمَا اللُّؤْلُؤُ وَالْمَرْجَانُ ۟ۚ
Yakhruju minhumal Luʹluʹu wal-Marjaan:
Out of both ˹waters˺ come forth pearls and coral.
Verse 55:23
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:24
وَلَهُ الْجَوَارِ الْمُنْشَـٰٔتُ فِی الْبَحْرِ كَالْاَعْلَامِ ۟ۚ
Wa-lahul Jawaaril muñ-shaʹaaatu fil baḥri kal-ʹaʻlaam:
To Him belong the ships with raised sails, sailing through the seas like mountains.
Verse 55:25
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟۠
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:26
كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَیْهَا فَانٍ ۟ۚۖ
Kullu man ʻalayhaa faan:
Every being on earth is bound to perish.
Verse 55:27
وَّیَبْقٰی وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الْجَلٰلِ وَالْاِكْرَامِ ۟ۚ
Wa-yabq̣aa Wajhu Rabbika Ẓul Jalaali wal-ʹIkraam.
Only your Lord Himself, full of Majesty and Honour, will remain ˹forever˺.
Verse 55:28
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:29
یَسْـَٔلُهٗ مَنْ فِی السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِ ؕ كُلَّ یَوْمٍ هُوَ فِیْ شَاْنٍ ۟ۚ
Yasʹaluhoo mañ fis samaawaati walarḍ: kulla Yawmin Huwa fee shaʹn!
All those in the heavens and the earth are dependent on Him. Day in and day out He has something to bring about.
Verse 55:30
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:31
سَنَفْرُغُ لَكُمْ اَیُّهَ الثَّقَلٰنِ ۟ۚ
Sanafrug̣u lakum ʹayyuhas̤ s̤aq̣alaan!
We will soon attend to you ˹for judgment˺, O two multitudes ˹of jinn and humans˺!
Verse 55:32
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:33
یٰمَعْشَرَ الْجِنِّ وَالْاِنْسِ اِنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ اَنْ تَنْفُذُوْا مِنْ اَقْطَارِ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِ فَانْفُذُوْا ؕ لَا تَنْفُذُوْنَ اِلَّا بِسُلْطٰنٍ ۟ۚ
Yaa-Maʻsharal jinni wal-ʹiñsi ʹinis tataʻtum ʹañ tañfuẓoo min ʹaq̣ṭaaris samaawaati wal-ʹarḍi fañfuẓoo! laa- tañfuẓoona ʹillaa bisulṭaan!
O assembly of jinn and humans! If you can penetrate beyond the realms of the heavens and the earth, then do so. ˹But˺ you cannot do that without ˹Our˺ authority.
Verse 55:34
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:35
یُرْسَلُ عَلَیْكُمَا شُوَاظٌ مِّنْ نَّارٍ ۙ۬ وَّنُحَاسٌ فَلَا تَنْتَصِرٰنِ ۟ۚ
Yursalu ʻalaykumaa shuwaaz̤̣um min naariñwwa nuḥaasuñ falaa tañtaṣiraan;
Flames of fire and ˹molten˺ copper will be sent against you, and you will not be able to defend one another.
Verse 55:36
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:37
فَاِذَا انْشَقَّتِ السَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتْ وَرْدَةً كَالدِّهَانِ ۟ۚ
Faʹiẓañ shaq̣q̣atis samaaaʹu fakaanat wardatañ kaddihaan:
˹How horrible will it be˺ when the heavens will split apart, becoming rose-red like ˹burnt˺ oil!
Verse 55:38
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:39
فَیَوْمَىِٕذٍ لَّا یُسْـَٔلُ عَنْ ذَنْۢبِهٖۤ اِنْسٌ وَّلَا جَآنٌّ ۟ۚ
Fayawmaʹiẓil laa yusʹalu ʻañ ẓambiheee ʹiñsuñw Walaa jaaann,―
On that Day there will be no need for any human or jinn to be asked about their sins.
Verse 55:40
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:41
یُعْرَفُ الْمُجْرِمُوْنَ بِسِیْمٰهُمْ فَیُؤْخَذُ بِالنَّوَاصِیْ وَالْاَقْدَامِ ۟ۚ
Yuʻraful mujrimoona biseemaahum fayuʹkhaẓu binnawaaṣee wal-ʹaq̣daam.
The wicked will be recognized by their appearance, then will be seized by ˹their˺ forelocks and feet.
Verse 55:42
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:43
هٰذِهٖ جَهَنَّمُ الَّتِیْ یُكَذِّبُ بِهَا الْمُجْرِمُوْنَ ۟ۘ
Haaẓihee Jahannamul latee yukaẓẓibu bihal mujrimoon;
˹They will be told,˺ “This is the Hell which the wicked denied.”
Verse 55:44
یَطُوْفُوْنَ بَیْنَهَا وَبَیْنَ حَمِیْمٍ اٰنٍ ۟ۚ
Yaṭoofoona baynahaa wa-bayna ḥameemin ʹaan!
They will alternate between its flames and scalding water.
Verse 55:45
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟۠
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:46
وَلِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهٖ جَنَّتٰنِ ۟ۚ
Wa-liman khaafa maq̣aama Rabbihee Jannataan,―
And whoever is in awe of standing before their Lord will have two Gardens.
Verse 55:47
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟ۙ
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:48
ذَوَاتَاۤ اَفْنَانٍ ۟ۚ
Ẓawaataaa ʹafnaan:―
˹Both will be˺ with lush branches.
Verse 55:49
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:50
فِیْهِمَا عَیْنٰنِ تَجْرِیٰنِ ۟ۚ
Feehimaa ʻaynaani tajriyaan:―
In each ˹Garden˺ will be two flowing springs.
Verse 55:51
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:52
فِیْهِمَا مِنْ كُلِّ فَاكِهَةٍ زَوْجٰنِ ۟ۚ
Feehimaa miñ kulli faakihatiñ zawjaan.
In each will be two types of every fruit.
Verse 55:53
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:54
مُتَّكِـِٕیْنَ عَلٰی فُرُشٍ بَطَآىِٕنُهَا مِنْ اِسْتَبْرَقٍ ؕ وَجَنَا الْجَنَّتَیْنِ دَانٍ ۟ۚ
Muttakiʹeena ʻalaa furushim baṭaaaʹinuhaa min ʹistabraq̣: wa-janal jannatayni daan.
Those ˹believers˺ will recline on furnishings lined with rich brocade. And the fruit of both Gardens will hang within reach.
Verse 55:55
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:56
فِیْهِنَّ قٰصِرٰتُ الطَّرْفِ ۙ لَمْ یَطْمِثْهُنَّ اِنْسٌ قَبْلَهُمْ وَلَا جَآنٌّ ۟ۚ
Feehinna q̣aaṣiraatuṭ ṭarfi lam yaṭmis̤hunna ʹiñsuñ q̣ablahum wa-laa jaaann;―
In both ˹Gardens˺ will be maidens of modest gaze, who no human or jinn has ever touched before.
Verse 55:57
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟ۚ
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:58
كَاَنَّهُنَّ الْیَاقُوْتُ وَالْمَرْجَانُ ۟ۚ
Kaʹannahunnal yaaq̣ootu wal-marjaan.
Those ˹maidens˺ will be ˹as elegant˺ as rubies and coral.
Verse 55:59
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:60
هَلْ جَزَآءُ الْاِحْسَانِ اِلَّا الْاِحْسَانُ ۟ۚ
Hal Jazaaaʹul ʹIḥsaani ʹillal ʹIḥsaan?
Is there any reward for goodness except goodness?
Verse 55:61
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:62
وَمِنْ دُوْنِهِمَا جَنَّتٰنِ ۟ۚ
Wa-miñ doonihimaa Jannataan,―
And below these two ˹Gardens˺ will be two others.
Verse 55:63
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟ۙ
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:64
مُدْهَآمَّتٰنِ ۟ۚ
Mudhaaammataan.
Both will be dark green.
Verse 55:65
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟ۚ
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:66
فِیْهِمَا عَیْنٰنِ نَضَّاخَتٰنِ ۟ۚ
Feehimaa ʻaynaani naḍ-ḍaakhataan:
In each will be two gushing springs.
Verse 55:67
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:68
فِیْهِمَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَّنَخْلٌ وَّرُمَّانٌ ۟ۚ
Feehimaa faakihatuñw wanakhluñw warummaan:
In both will be fruit, palm trees, and pomegranates.
Verse 55:69
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟ۚ
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:70
فِیْهِنَّ خَیْرٰتٌ حِسَانٌ ۟ۚ
Feehinna khayraatun ḥisaan;
In all Gardens will be noble, pleasant mates.
Verse 55:71
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟ۚ
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:72
حُوْرٌ مَّقْصُوْرٰتٌ فِی الْخِیَامِ ۟ۚ
Ḥoorum maq̣ṣooraatuñ fil khiyaam;―
˹They will be˺ maidens with gorgeous eyes, reserved in pavilions.
Verse 55:73
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟ۚ
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:74
لَمْ یَطْمِثْهُنَّ اِنْسٌ قَبْلَهُمْ وَلَا جَآنٌّ ۟ۚ
Lam yaṭmis̤hunna ʹiñsuñ q̣ablahum wa-laa jaaan;
No human or jinn has ever touched these ˹maidens˺ before.
Verse 55:75
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:76
مُتَّكِـِٕیْنَ عَلٰی رَفْرَفٍ خُضْرٍ وَّعَبْقَرِیٍّ حِسَانٍ ۟ۚ
Muttakiʹeena ʻalaa rafrafin khuḍriñw waʻabq̣ariyyin ḥisaan.
All ˹believers˺ will be reclining on green cushions and splendid carpets.
Verse 55:77
فَبِاَیِّ اٰلَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۟
Fabiʹayyi ʹaalaaaʹi Rabbikumaa tukaẓẓibaan?
Then which of your Lord’s favours will you both deny?
Verse 55:78
تَبٰرَكَ اسْمُ رَبِّكَ ذِی الْجَلٰلِ وَالْاِكْرَامِ ۟۠
Tabaarak asmu Rabbika Ẓil Jalaali wal-ʹIkraam.
Blessed is the Name of your Lord, full of Majesty and Honour.
