Surah Al-Layl
Surah Al-Layl (The Night) is Surah 92 of the Holy Quran, a Meccan Surah with 21 verses, available here in English.
Verse 92:1
وَالَّیْلِ اِذَا یَغْشٰی ۟ۙ
Wal-Layli ʹiẓaa yag̣shaa;
By the night when it covers,
Verse 92:2
وَالنَّهَارِ اِذَا تَجَلّٰی ۟ۙ
Wan-Nahaari ʹiẓaa tajallaa;
and the day when it shines!
Verse 92:3
وَمَا خَلَقَ الذَّكَرَ وَالْاُ ۟ۙ
Wa-maa khalaq̣aẓ ẓakara wal-ʹuñs̤aaa;
And by ˹the One˺ Who created male and female!
Verse 92:4
اِنَّ سَعْیَكُمْ لَشَتّٰی ۟ؕ
ʹInna saʻyakum lashattaa.
Surely the ends you strive for are diverse.
Verse 92:5
فَاَمَّا مَنْ اَعْطٰی وَاتَّقٰی ۟ۙ
Faʹammaa man ʹaʻṭaa wattaq̣aa,―
As for the one who is charitable, mindful ˹of Allah˺,
Verse 92:6
وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنٰی ۟ۙ
Wa-ṣaddaq̣a bil-Ḥusnaa,―
and ˹firmly˺ believes in the finest reward,
Verse 92:7
فَسَنُیَسِّرُهٗ لِلْیُسْرٰی ۟ؕ
Fasanuyassiruhoo lil-Yusraa.
We will facilitate for them the Way of Ease.
Verse 92:8
وَاَمَّا مَنْ بَخِلَ وَاسْتَغْنٰی ۟ۙ
Wa-ʹammaa mam bakhila wastag̣naa,
And as for the one who is stingy, indifferent ˹to Allah˺,
Verse 92:9
وَكَذَّبَ بِالْحُسْنٰی ۟ۙ
Wa-kaẓẓaba bil-Ḥusnaa,―
and ˹staunchly˺ denies the finest reward,
Verse 92:10
فَسَنُیَسِّرُهٗ لِلْعُسْرٰی ۟ؕ
Fasanuyassiruhoo lilʻusraa;
We will facilitate for them the path of hardship.
Verse 92:11
وَمَا یُغْنِیْ عَنْهُ مَالُهٗۤ اِذَا تَرَدّٰی ۟ؕ
Wa-maa yug̣nee ʻanhu maaluhooo ʹiẓaa taraddaa.
And their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they tumble ˹into Hell˺.
Verse 92:12
اِنَّ عَلَیْنَا لَلْهُدٰی ۟ؗۖ
ʹInna ʻalaynaa lal-hudaa,
It is certainly upon Us ˹alone˺ to show ˹the way to˺ guidance.
Verse 92:13
وَاِنَّ لَنَا لَلْاٰخِرَةَ وَالْاُوْلٰی ۟
Wa-ʹinna lanaa lal-ʹAakhirata wal-ʹOolaa.
And surely to Us ˹alone˺ belong this life and the next.
Verse 92:14
فَاَنْذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًا تَلَظّٰی ۟ۚ
Faʹañẓartukum Naarañ talaz̤̣z̤̣aa.
And so I have warned you of a raging Fire,
Verse 92:15
لَا یَصْلٰىهَاۤ اِلَّا الْاَشْقَی ۟ۙ
Laa- yaṣlaahaaa ʹillal ʹashq̣aa,―
in which none will burn except the most wretched—
Verse 92:16
الَّذِیْ كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلّٰی ۟ؕ
ʹAllaẓee kaẓẓaba wa-tawallaa.
who deny and turn away.
Verse 92:17
وَسَیُجَنَّبُهَا الْاَتْقَی ۟ۙ
Wa-sa-yujannabuhal ʹatq̣aa,―
But the righteous will be spared from it—
Verse 92:18
الَّذِیْ یُؤْتِیْ مَالَهٗ یَتَزَكّٰی ۟ۚ
ʹAllaẓee yuʹtee maalahoo yatazakkaa,
who donate ˹some of˺ their wealth only to purify themselves,
Verse 92:19
وَمَا لِاَحَدٍ عِنْدَهٗ مِنْ نِّعْمَةٍ تُجْزٰۤی ۟ۙ
Wa-maa liʹaḥadin ʻiñdahoo min niʻmatiñ tujzaa,
not in return for someone’s favours,
Verse 92:20
اِلَّا ابْتِغَآءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ الْاَعْلٰی ۟ۚ
ʹIllab tig̣aaaʹa Wajhi Rabbihil ʹAʻ-laa;
but seeking the pleasure of their Lord, the Most High.
Verse 92:21
وَلَسَوْفَ یَرْضٰی ۟۠
Wa-lasawfa yarḍaa.
They will certainly be pleased.
