Surah Ash-Shams
Surah Ash-Shams (The Sun) is Surah 91 of the Holy Quran, a Meccan Surah with 15 verses, available here in English.
Verse 91:1
وَالشَّمْسِ وَضُحٰىهَا ۟
Wash-Shamsi wa-ḍuḥaa-haa;
By the sun and its brightness,
Verse 91:2
وَالْقَمَرِ اِذَا تَلٰىهَا ۟
Wal-Q̣amari ʹiẓaa talaaha;
and the moon as it follows it,
Verse 91:3
وَالنَّهَارِ اِذَا جَلّٰىهَا ۟
Wan-Nahaari ʹiẓaa jallaahaa,
and the day as it unveils it,
Verse 91:4
وَالَّیْلِ اِذَا یَغْشٰىهَا ۟
Wal-Layli ʹiẓaa yag̣shaahaa;
and the night as it conceals it!
Verse 91:5
وَالسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنٰىهَا ۟
Wassamaaaʹi wa-maa banaahaa;
And by heaven and ˹the One˺ Who built it,
Verse 91:6
وَالْاَرْضِ وَمَا طَحٰىهَا ۟
Wal-ʹArḍi wa-maa ṭaḥaahaa;
and the earth and ˹the One˺ Who spread it!
Verse 91:7
وَنَفْسٍ وَّمَا سَوّٰىهَا ۟
Wa-nafsiñw Wamaa sawwaahaa;
And by the soul and ˹the One˺ Who fashioned it,
Verse 91:8
فَاَلْهَمَهَا فُجُوْرَهَا وَتَقْوٰىهَا ۟
Faʹalhamahaa fujoorahaa wa-taq̣waahaa;―
then with ˹the knowledge of˺ right and wrong inspired it!
Verse 91:9
قَدْ اَفْلَحَ مَنْ زَكّٰىهَا ۟
Q̣ad ʹaflaḥa mañ zakkaahaa,
Successful indeed is the one who purifies their soul,
Verse 91:10
وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنْ دَسّٰىهَا ۟ؕ
Wa-q̣ad khaaba mañ dassaahaa.
and doomed is the one who corrupts it!
Verse 91:11
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُوْدُ بِطَغْوٰىهَاۤ ۟
Kaẓẓabat S̤amoodu biṭag̣waahaa.
Thamûd rejected ˹the truth˺ out of arrogance,
Verse 91:12
اِذِ انْۢبَعَثَ اَشْقٰىهَا ۟
ʹIẓim baʻas̤a ʹashq̣aahaa,
when the most wicked of them was roused ˹to kill the she-camel˺.
Verse 91:13
فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُوْلُ اللّٰهِ نَاقَةَ اللّٰهِ وَسُقْیٰهَا ۟ؕ
Faq̣aala lahum Rasoolul laahi Naaq̣atal laahi wa-suq̣yaahaa!
But the messenger of Allah warned them, “˹Do not disturb˺ Allah’s camel and her ˹turn to˺ drink!”
Verse 91:14
فَكَذَّبُوْهُ فَعَقَرُوْهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَیْهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ بِذَنْۢبِهِمْ فَسَوّٰىهَا ۟
Fakaẓẓaboohu faʻaq̣aroohaa. Fadamdama ʻalayhim Rabbuhum̃ biẓambihim fasawwaahaa!
Still they defied him and slaughtered her. So their Lord crushed them for their crime, levelling all to the ground.
Verse 91:15
وَلَا یَخَافُ عُقْبٰهَا ۟۠
Wa-laa yakhaafu ʻuq̣baahaa.
He has no fear of consequences.
