Surah Al-Ghashiyah
Surah Al-Ghashiyah (The Overwhelming) is Surah 88 of the Holy Quran, a Meccan Surah with 26 verses, available here in English.
Verse 88:1
هَلْ اَتٰىكَ حَدِیْثُ الْغَاشِیَةِ ۟ؕ
Hal ʹataaka ḥadees̤ul G̣aashiyah?
Has the news of the Overwhelming Event reached you ˹O Prophet˺?
Verse 88:2
وُجُوْهٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ خَاشِعَةٌ ۟ۙ
Wujoohuñy Yawmaʹiẓin khaashiʻah,
On that Day ˹some˺ faces will be downcast,
Verse 88:3
عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌ ۟ۙ
ʻAamilatun naaṣibah,
˹totally˺ overburdened, exhausted,
Verse 88:4
تَصْلٰی نَارًا حَامِیَةً ۟ۙ
Taṣlaa Naaran ḥaamiyah,―
burning in a scorching Fire,
Verse 88:5
تُسْقٰی مِنْ عَیْنٍ اٰنِیَةٍ ۟ؕ
Tusq̣aa min ʻaynin ʹaaniyah,
left to drink from a scalding spring.
Verse 88:6
لَیْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ اِلَّا مِنْ ضَرِیْعٍ ۟ۙ
Laysa lahum ṭaʻaamun ʹillaa miñ Ḍareeʻ
They will have no food except a foul, thorny shrub,
Verse 88:7
لَّا یُسْمِنُ وَلَا یُغْنِیْ مِنْ جُوْعٍ ۟ؕ
Laa- yusminu wa-laa yug̣nee miñ jooʻ.
neither nourishing nor satisfying hunger.
Verse 88:8
وُجُوْهٌ یَّوْمَىِٕذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌ ۟ۙ
Wujoohuñy Yawmaʹiẓin naaʻimah,
On that Day ˹other˺ faces will be glowing with bliss,
Verse 88:9
لِّسَعْیِهَا رَاضِیَةٌ ۟ۙ
Lisaʻyihaa raaḍiyah,
˹fully˺ pleased with their striving,
Verse 88:10
فِیْ جَنَّةٍ عَالِیَةٍ ۟ۙ
Fee Jannatin ʻaaliyah,
in an elevated Garden,
Verse 88:11
لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِیْهَا لَاغِیَةً ۟ؕ
Laa- tasmaʻu feehaa laag̣iyah:
where no idle talk will be heard.
Verse 88:12
فِیْهَا عَیْنٌ جَارِیَةٌ ۟ۘ
Feehaa ʻaynuñ jaariyah,
In it will be a running spring,
Verse 88:13
فِیْهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوْعَةٌ ۟ۙ
Feehaa Sururum marfooʻah,
along with thrones raised high,
Verse 88:14
وَّاَكْوَابٌ مَّوْضُوْعَةٌ ۟ۙ
Wa-ʹakwaabum mawḍooʻah,
and cups set at hand,
Verse 88:15
وَّنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوْفَةٌ ۟ۙ
Wa-namaariq̣u maṣfoofah,
and ˹fine˺ cushions lined up,
Verse 88:16
وَّزَرَابِیُّ مَبْثُوْثَةٌ ۟ؕ
Wa-zaraabiyyu mabs̤oos̤ah.
and ˹splendid˺ carpets spread out.
Verse 88:17
اَفَلَا یَنْظُرُوْنَ اِلَی الْاِبِلِ كَیْفَ خُلِقَتْ ۟ۥ
ʹAfalaa yañz̤̣uroona ʹilal ʹibili kayfa khuliq̣at?―
Do they not ever reflect on camels—how they were ˹masterfully˺ created;
Verse 88:18
وَاِلَی السَّمَآءِ كَیْفَ رُفِعَتْ ۟ۥ
Wa-ʹilas Samaaaʹi kayfa rufiʻat?―
and the sky—how it was raised ˹high˺;
Verse 88:19
وَاِلَی الْجِبَالِ كَیْفَ نُصِبَتْ ۟ۥ
Wa-ʹilal Jibaali kayfa nuṣibat?
and the mountains—how they were firmly set up;
Verse 88:20
وَاِلَی الْاَرْضِ كَیْفَ سُطِحَتْ ۟ۥ
Wa-ʹilal ʹArḍi kayfa suṭiḥat?
and the earth—how it was levelled out?
Verse 88:21
فَذَكِّرْ ؕ۫ اِنَّمَاۤ اَنْتَ مُذَكِّرٌ ۟ؕ
Faẓakkir, ʹinnamaaa ʹañta muẓakkir.
So, ˹continue to˺ remind ˹all, O Prophet˺, for your duty is only to remind.
Verse 88:22
لَسْتَ عَلَیْهِمْ بِمُصَۜیْطِرٍ ۟ۙ
Lasta ʻalayhim̃ bimuṣayṭir.
You are not ˹there˺ to compel them ˹to believe˺.
Verse 88:23
اِلَّا مَنْ تَوَلّٰی وَكَفَرَ ۟ۙ
ʹIllaa mañ tawallaa wa-kafar,―
But whoever turns away, persisting in disbelief,
Verse 88:24
فَیُعَذِّبُهُ اللّٰهُ الْعَذَابَ الْاَكْبَرَ ۟ؕ
Fayuʻaẓẓibuhul laahul ʻAẓaabal ʹakbar.
then Allah will inflict upon them the major punishment.
Verse 88:25
اِنَّ اِلَیْنَاۤ اِیَابَهُمْ ۟ۙ
ʹInna ʹilaynaaa ʹIyaabahum;
Surely to Us is their return,
Verse 88:26
ثُمَّ اِنَّ عَلَیْنَا حِسَابَهُمْ ۟۠
S̤umma ʹinna ʻalaynaa ḥisaabahum.
then surely with Us is their reckoning.
