    وَٱلْفَجْرِ

    Wal-Fajr;

    By the dawn

  2. 2

    وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ

    Wa-Layaalin ʻashr;

    And [by] ten nights

  3. 3

    وَٱلشَّفْعِ وَٱلْوَتْرِ

    Wash-Shafʻi wal-watr;

And [by] the even [number] and the odd

  4. 4

    وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ

    Wallayli ʹiẓaa yasr;

And [by] the night when it passes,

  5. 5

Hal fee ẓaalika q̣asamul liẓee ḥijr?

Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?

  6. 6

ʹAlam tara kayfa faʻala Rabbuka biʻAad,―

Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ʿAad -

  7. 7

    ʹIrama Ẓaatil ʻimaad,

[With] Iram - who had lofty pillars,

  8. 8

ʹAllatee lam yukhlaq̣ mis̤luhaa fil bilaad?

The likes of whom had never been created in the land?

  9. 9

    Wa-S̤amoodal laẓeena jaabuṣ ṣakhra bil-waad?

And [with] Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the valley?

  10. 10

    Wa-Firʻawna ẓil ʹawtaad?

And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?

  11. 11

    ʹAllaẓeena ṭag̣aw fil bilaad.

[All of] whom oppressed within the lands

  12. 12

    Faʹaks̤aroo fihal fasaad.

    And increased therein the corruption.

  13. 13

    Faṣabba ʻalayhim Rabbuka sawṭa ʻaẓaab:

So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.

  14. 14

    ʹInna Rabbaka labilmirṣaad.

Indeed, your Lord is in observation.

  15. 15

Faʹammal ʹiñsaanu ʹiẓaa mab talaahu Rabbuhoo faʹakramahoo wa-naʻ-ʻamah, fayaq̣oolu Rabbeee ʹakraman.

And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."

  16. 16

Wa-ʹammaaa ʹiẓaa mab talaahu faq̣adara ʻalayhi rizq̣ah, fayaq̣oolu Rabbeee ʹahaanan.

But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."

  17. 17

    Kallaa bal laa tukrimoonal yateem.

No! But you do not honor the orphan

  18. 18

    Wa-laa taḥaaaḍḍoona ʻalaa ṭaʻaamil miskeen!―

And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.

  19. 19

    Wa-taʹkuloonat Turaas̤a ʹaklal lammaa,

And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,

  20. 20

    Wa-tuḥibboonal maala ḥubbañ jammaa.

And you love wealth with immense love.

  21. 21

Kallaaa ʹiẓaa dukkatil ʹarḍu dakkañ dakkaa,

No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed

  22. 22

    Wa-jaaaʹa Rabbuka wal-malaku ṣaffañ ṣaffaa,

And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank,

  23. 23

Wa-jeeeʹa Yawmaʹiẓim bi-Jahannam, Yawmaʹiẓiñy yataẓakkarul ʹiñsaanu wa-ʹannaa lahuẓ ẓikraa?

And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but how [i.e., what good] to him will be the remembrance?

  24. 24

    Yaq̣oolu yaa-laytanee q̣addamtu li-Ḥayaatee!

He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."

  25. 25

    Fa-Yawmaʹiẓil laa yuʻaẓẓibu ʻAẓaabahooo ʹaḥad,

So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,

  26. 26

    Wa-laa yoos̤iq̣u wa-s̤aaq̣ahooo ʹaḥad.

And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].

  27. 27

    Yaaaʹayyatuhan Nafsul muṭmaʹinnah!

[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,

  28. 28

    ʹIrjiʻeee ʹilaa Rabbiki raaḍiyatam marḍiyyah!

Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],

  29. 29

    Fadkhulee fee ʻIbaadee!

And enter among My [righteous] servants

  30. 30

    Wadkhulee Jannatee!

    And enter My Paradise."
