Surah At-Takwir
Surah At-Takwir (The Overthrowing) is Surah 81 of the Holy Quran, a Meccan Surah with 29 verses, available here in English.
Verse 81:1
اِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ ۟
ʹIẓash shamsu kuwwirat;
When the sun is put out,
Verse 81:2
وَاِذَا النُّجُوْمُ انْكَدَرَتْ ۟
Wa-ʹiẓan nujoomuñ kadarat;
and when the stars fall down,
Verse 81:3
وَاِذَا الْجِبَالُ سُیِّرَتْ ۟
Wa-ʹiẓal jibaalu suyyirat;
and when the mountains are blown away,
Verse 81:4
وَاِذَا الْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ ۟
Wa-ʹiẓal ʻishaaru ʻuṭṭilat;
and when pregnant camels are left untended,
Verse 81:5
وَاِذَا الْوُحُوْشُ حُشِرَتْ ۟
Wa-ʹiẓal wuḥooshu ḥushirat;
and when wild beasts are gathered together,
Verse 81:6
وَاِذَا الْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ ۟
Wa-ʹiẓal biḥaaru sujjirat;
and when the seas are set on fire,
Verse 81:7
وَاِذَا النُّفُوْسُ زُوِّجَتْ ۟
Wa-ʹiẓan nufoosu zuwwijat:
and when the souls ˹and their bodies˺ are paired ˹once more˺,
Verse 81:8
وَاِذَا الْمَوْءٗدَةُ سُىِٕلَتْ ۟
Wa-ʹiẓal mawʹoodatu suʹilat―
and when baby girls, buried alive, are asked
Verse 81:9
بِاَیِّ ذَنْۢبٍ قُتِلَتْ ۟ۚ
Biʹayyi ẓambiñ q̣utilat;
for what crime they were put to death,
Verse 81:10
وَاِذَا الصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ ۟
Wa-ʹiẓaṣ ṣuḥufu nushirat:
and when the records ˹of deeds˺ are laid open,
Verse 81:11
وَاِذَا السَّمَآءُ كُشِطَتْ ۟
Wa-ʹiẓas samaaaʹu kushiṭat;
and when the sky is stripped away,
Verse 81:12
وَاِذَا الْجَحِیْمُ سُعِّرَتْ ۟
Wa-ʹiẓal Jaḥeemu suʻ-ʻirat;
and when the Hellfire is fiercely flared up,
Verse 81:13
وَاِذَا الْجَنَّةُ اُزْلِفَتْ ۟
Wa-ʹiẓal Jannatu ʹuzlifat;
and when Paradise is brought near—
Verse 81:14
عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّاۤ اَحْضَرَتْ ۟ؕ
ʻAlimat nafsum maaa ʹaḥḍarat.
˹on that Day˺ each soul will know what ˹deeds˺ it has brought along.
Verse 81:15
فَلَاۤ اُقْسِمُ بِالْخُنَّسِ ۟ۙ
Falaaa ʹuq̣simu bil-khunnas,
I do swear by the receding stars
Verse 81:16
الْجَوَارِ الْكُنَّسِ ۟ۙ
ʹAl-jawaaril kunnas;
which travel and hide,
Verse 81:17
وَالَّیْلِ اِذَا عَسْعَسَ ۟ۙ
Wal-Layli ʹiẓaa ʻasʻas;
and the night as it falls
Verse 81:18
وَالصُّبْحِ اِذَا تَنَفَّسَ ۟ۙ
Waṣṣubḥi ʹiẓaa tanaffas;―
and the day as it breaks!
Verse 81:19
اِنَّهٗ لَقَوْلُ رَسُوْلٍ كَرِیْمٍ ۟ۙ
ʹInnahoo laq̣awlu Rasooliñ Kareem,
Indeed, this ˹Quran˺ is the Word of ˹Allah delivered by Gabriel,˺ a noble messenger-angel,
Verse 81:20
ذِیْ قُوَّةٍ عِنْدَ ذِی الْعَرْشِ مَكِیْنٍ ۟ۙ
Ẓee q̣uwwatin ʻiñda Ẓil ʻArshi makeen,
full of power, held in honour by the Lord of the Throne,
Verse 81:21
مُّطَاعٍ ثَمَّ اَمِیْنٍ ۟ؕ
Muṭaaʻiñ s̤amma ʹAmeen.
obeyed there ˹in heaven˺, and trustworthy.
Verse 81:22
وَمَا صَاحِبُكُمْ بِمَجْنُوْنٍ ۟ۚ
Wa-maa Ṣaaḥibukum̃ bimajnoon;
And your fellow man is not insane.
Verse 81:23
وَلَقَدْ رَاٰهُ بِالْاُفُقِ الْمُبِیْنِ ۟ۚ
Wa-laq̣ad raʹaahu bilʹufuq̣il mubeen.
And he did see that ˹angel˺ on the clear horizon,
Verse 81:24
وَمَا هُوَ عَلَی الْغَیْبِ بِضَنِیْنٍ ۟ۚ
Wa-maa huwa ʻalal g̣aybi biḍaneen.
and he does not withhold ˹what is revealed to him of˺ the unseen.
Verse 81:25
وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَیْطٰنٍ رَّجِیْمٍ ۟ۙ
Wa-maa huwa biq̣awli Shayṭaanir rajeem.
And this ˹Quran˺ is not the word of an outcast devil.
Verse 81:26
فَاَیْنَ تَذْهَبُوْنَ ۟ؕ
Faʹayna taẓhaboon?
So what ˹other˺ path would you take?
Verse 81:27
اِنْ هُوَ اِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعٰلَمِیْنَ ۟ۙ
ʹIn huwa ʹilla Ẓikrul lilʻaalameen:
Surely this ˹Quran˺ is only a reminder to the whole world—
Verse 81:28
لِمَنْ شَآءَ مِنْكُمْ اَنْ یَّسْتَقِیْمَ ۟ؕ
Limañ shaaaʹa miñkum ʹañy yastaq̣eem:
to whoever of you wills to take the Straight Way.
Verse 81:29
وَمَا تَشَآءُوْنَ اِلَّاۤ اَنْ یَّشَآءَ اللّٰهُ رَبُّ الْعٰلَمِیْنَ ۟۠
Wa-maa tashaaaʹoona ʹillaaa ʹañy yashaaaʹal laahu Rabbul ʻAalameen.
But you cannot will ˹to do so˺, except by the Will of Allah, the Lord of all worlds.
