Surah Al-Waqiah
Surah Al-Waqiah (The Inevitable) is Surah 56 of the Holy Quran, a Meccan Surah with 96 verses, available here in English.
Verse 56:1
اِذَا وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ ۟ۙ
ʹIẓaa wa-q̣aʻatil WAAQ̣IʻAH,
When the Inevitable Event takes place,
Verse 56:2
لَیْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ ۟ۘ
Laysa liwaq̣ʻatihaa kaaẓibah.
then no one can deny it has come.
Verse 56:3
خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ ۟ۙ
Khaafiḍatur Raafiʻah;
It will debase ˹some˺ and elevate ˹others˺.
Verse 56:4
اِذَا رُجَّتِ الْاَرْضُ رَجًّا ۟ۙ
ʹIẓaa rujjatil ʹarḍu rajjaa,
When the earth will be violently shaken,
Verse 56:5
وَّبُسَّتِ الْجِبَالُ بَسًّا ۟ۙ
Wa-bussatil jibaalu bassaa,
and the mountains will be crushed to pieces,
Verse 56:6
فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنْۢبَثًّا ۟ۙ
Fakaanat habaaaʹam mumbas̤s̤aa,
becoming scattered ˹particles of˺ dust,
Verse 56:7
وَّكُنْتُمْ اَزْوَاجًا ثَلٰثَةً ۟ؕ
Wa-kuñtum ʹazwaajañ s̤alaas̤ah.
you will ˹all˺ be ˹divided into˺ three groups:
Verse 56:8
فَاَصْحٰبُ الْمَیْمَنَةِ ۙ۬ مَاۤ اَصْحٰبُ الْمَیْمَنَةِ ۟ؕ
FaʹAṣḥaabul Maymanah; Maaa ʹAṣḥaabul Maymanah?
the people of the right, how ˹blessed˺ will they be;
Verse 56:9
وَاَصْحٰبُ الْمَشْـَٔمَةِ ۙ۬ مَاۤ اَصْحٰبُ الْمَشْـَٔمَةِ ۟ؕ
Wa-ʹAṣḥaabul mashʹamah,― Maaa ʹAṣḥaabul Mashʹamah?
the people of the left, how ˹miserable˺ will they be;
Verse 56:10
وَالسّٰبِقُوْنَ السّٰبِقُوْنَ ۟ۚۙ
Was-Saabiq̣oonas Saabiq̣oon.
and the foremost ˹in faith˺ will be the foremost ˹in Paradise˺.
Verse 56:11
اُولٰٓىِٕكَ الْمُقَرَّبُوْنَ ۟ۚ
ʹUlaaaʹikal Muq̣arraboon:
They are the ones nearest ˹to Allah˺,
Verse 56:12
فِیْ جَنّٰتِ النَّعِیْمِ ۟
Fee Jannaatin Naʻeem:
in the Gardens of Bliss.
Verse 56:13
ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الْاَوَّلِیْنَ ۟ۙ
S̤ullatum minal ʹawwaleen,
˹They will be˺ a multitude from earlier generations
Verse 56:14
وَقَلِیْلٌ مِّنَ الْاٰخِرِیْنَ ۟ؕ
Wa-q̣aleelum minal ʹaakhireen.
and a few from later generations.
Verse 56:15
عَلٰی سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُوْنَةٍ ۟ۙ
ʻAlaa sururim mawḍoonah,
˹All will be˺ on jewelled thrones,
Verse 56:16
مُّتَّكِـِٕیْنَ عَلَیْهَا مُتَقٰبِلِیْنَ ۟
Muttakiʹeena ʻalayhaa mutaq̣aabileen.
reclining face to face.
Verse 56:17
یَطُوْفُ عَلَیْهِمْ وِلْدَانٌ مُّخَلَّدُوْنَ ۟ۙ
Yaṭoofu ʻalayhim wildaanum mukhalladoon,
They will be waited on by eternal youths
Verse 56:18
بِاَكْوَابٍ وَّاَبَارِیْقَ ۙ۬ وَكَاْسٍ مِّنْ مَّعِیْنٍ ۟ۙ
Biʹakwaabiñw Waʹabaareeq̣a, wa-kaʹsim mim maʻeen:
with cups, pitchers, and a drink ˹of pure wine˺ from a flowing stream,
Verse 56:19
لَّا یُصَدَّعُوْنَ عَنْهَا وَلَا یُنْزِفُوْنَ ۟ۙ
Laa- yuṣaddaʻoona ʻanhaa wa-laa yuñzifoon:
that will cause them neither headache nor intoxication.
Verse 56:20
وَفَاكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا یَتَخَیَّرُوْنَ ۟ۙ
Wa-faakihatim mimmaa yatakhayyaroon;
˹They will also be served˺ any fruit they choose
Verse 56:21
وَلَحْمِ طَیْرٍ مِّمَّا یَشْتَهُوْنَ ۟ؕ
Wa-laḥmi ṭayrim mimmaa yashtahoon.
and meat from any bird they desire.
Verse 56:22
وَحُوْرٌ عِیْنٌ ۟ۙ
Wa-ḥoorun ʻeen,―
And ˹they will have˺ maidens with gorgeous eyes,
Verse 56:23
كَاَمْثَالِ اللُّؤْلُوءِ الْمَكْنُوْنِ ۟ۚ
Kaʹams̤aalil luʹluʹil maknoon.
like pristine pearls,
Verse 56:24
جَزَآءً بِمَا كَانُوْا یَعْمَلُوْنَ ۟
Jazaaaʹam bimaa kaanoo yaʻmaloon.
˹all˺ as a reward for what they used to do.
Verse 56:25
لَا یَسْمَعُوْنَ فِیْهَا لَغْوًا وَّلَا تَاْثِیْمًا ۟ۙ
Laa- yasmaʻoona feehaa lag̣wañw walaa taʹs̤eemaa,―
There they will never hear any idle or sinful talk—
Verse 56:26
اِلَّا قِیْلًا سَلٰمًا سَلٰمًا ۟
ʹIllaa q̣eelañ Salaamañ Salaamaa.
only good and virtuous speech.
Verse 56:27
وَاَصْحٰبُ الْیَمِیْنِ ۙ۬ مَاۤ اَصْحٰبُ الْیَمِیْنِ ۟ؕ
Wa-ʹAṣḥaabul Yameen,― maaa ʹAṣḥaabul Yameen
And the people of the right—how ˹blessed˺ will they be!
Verse 56:28
فِیْ سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُوْدٍ ۟ۙ
Fee sidrim makhḍood,
˹They will be˺ amid thornless lote trees,
Verse 56:29
وَّطَلْحٍ مَّنْضُوْدٍ ۟ۙ
Wa-ṭalḥim mañḍood,―
clusters of bananas,
Verse 56:30
وَّظِلٍّ مَّمْدُوْدٍ ۟ۙ
Wa-z̤̣illim mamdood,
extended shade,
Verse 56:31
وَّمَآءٍ مَّسْكُوْبٍ ۟ۙ
Wa-maaaʹim maskoob,
flowing water,
Verse 56:32
وَّفَاكِهَةٍ كَثِیْرَةٍ ۟ۙ
Wa-faakihatiñ kas̤eerah,
abundant fruit—
Verse 56:33
لَّا مَقْطُوْعَةٍ وَّلَا مَمْنُوْعَةٍ ۟ۙ
Laa maq̣ṭooʻatiñw walaa mamnooʻah,
never out of season nor forbidden—
Verse 56:34
وَّفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوْعَةٍ ۟ؕ
Wa-furushim marfooʻah.
and elevated furnishings.
Verse 56:35
اِنَّاۤ اَنْشَاْنٰهُنَّ اِنْشَآءً ۟ۙ
ʹInnaaa ʹañshaʹnaahunna ʹiñshaaaʹaa,
Indeed, We will have perfectly created their mates,
Verse 56:36
فَجَعَلْنٰهُنَّ اَبْكَارًا ۟ۙ
Fajaʻalnaahunna ʹabkaaraa―
making them virgins,
Verse 56:37
عُرُبًا اَتْرَابًا ۟ۙ
ʻUruban ʹatraabaa,
loving and of equal age,
Verse 56:38
لِّاَصْحٰبِ الْیَمِیْنِ ۟ؕ۠
LiʹAṣḥaabil Yameen.
for the people of the right,
Verse 56:39
ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الْاَوَّلِیْنَ ۟ۙ
S̤ullatum minal ʹawwaleen.
˹who will be˺ a multitude from earlier generations
Verse 56:40
وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الْاٰخِرِیْنَ ۟ؕ
Wa-s̤ullatum minal ʹaakhireen.
and a multitude from later generations.
Verse 56:41
وَاَصْحٰبُ الشِّمَالِ ۙ۬ مَاۤ اَصْحٰبُ الشِّمَالِ ۟ؕ
Wa-ʹAṣḥaabush Shimaal,― maaa ʹAṣḥaabush shimaal?
And the people of the left—how ˹miserable˺ will they be!
Verse 56:42
فِیْ سَمُوْمٍ وَّحَمِیْمٍ ۟ۙ
Fee samoomiñw waḥameem,―
˹They will be˺ in scorching heat and boiling water,
Verse 56:43
وَّظِلٍّ مِّنْ یَّحْمُوْمٍ ۟ۙ
Wa-z̤̣illim miñy yaḥmoom:
in the shade of black smoke,
Verse 56:44
لَّا بَارِدٍ وَّلَا كَرِیْمٍ ۟
Laa baaridiñw walaa kareem,
neither cool nor refreshing.
Verse 56:45
اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوْا قَبْلَ ذٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِیْنَ ۟ۚۖ
ʹInnahum kaanoo q̣abla ẓaalika mutrafeen,
Indeed, before this ˹torment˺ they were spoiled by luxury,
Verse 56:46
وَكَانُوْا یُصِرُّوْنَ عَلَی الْحِنْثِ الْعَظِیْمِ ۟ۚ
Wa-kaanoo yuṣirroona ʻalal ḥins̤il ʻaz̤̣eem!
and persisted in the worst of sin.
Verse 56:47
وَكَانُوْا یَقُوْلُوْنَ ۙ۬ اَىِٕذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَّعِظَامًا ءَاِنَّا لَمَبْعُوْثُوْنَ ۟ۙ
Wa-kaanu yaq̣ooloona, ʹaʹiẓaa mitnaa wa-kunnaa turaabañw waʻiz̤̣aaman ʹaʹinnaa lamabʻoos̤oon,
They used to ask ˹mockingly˺, “When we are dead and reduced to dust and bones, will we really be resurrected?
Verse 56:48
اَوَاٰبَآؤُنَا الْاَوَّلُوْنَ ۟
ʹA-waʹaabaaaʹunal ʹawwaloon?
And our forefathers as well?”
Verse 56:49
قُلْ اِنَّ الْاَوَّلِیْنَ وَالْاٰخِرِیْنَ ۟ۙ
Q̣ul ʹinnal ʹawwaleena wal-ʹaakhireen,
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Most certainly, earlier and later generations
Verse 56:50
لَمَجْمُوْعُوْنَ ۙ۬ اِلٰی مِیْقَاتِ یَوْمٍ مَّعْلُوْمٍ ۟
Lamajmooʻoona ʹilaa meeq̣aati Yawmim maʻloom.
will surely be gathered ˹together˺ for the appointed Day.
Verse 56:51
ثُمَّ اِنَّكُمْ اَیُّهَا الضَّآلُّوْنَ الْمُكَذِّبُوْنَ ۟ۙ
S̤umma ʹinnakum ʹayyuhaḍ ḍaaalloonal mukaẓẓiboon!
Then you, O misguided deniers,
Verse 56:52
لَاٰكِلُوْنَ مِنْ شَجَرٍ مِّنْ زَقُّوْمٍ ۟ۙ
Laʹaakiloona miñ Shajarim miñ Zaq̣q̣oom.
will certainly eat from ˹the fruit of˺ the trees of Zaqqûm,
Verse 56:53
فَمَالِـُٔوْنَ مِنْهَا الْبُطُوْنَ ۟ۚ
Famaaliʹoona minhal buṭoon,―
filling up ˹your˺ bellies with it.
Verse 56:54
فَشٰرِبُوْنَ عَلَیْهِ مِنَ الْحَمِیْمِ ۟ۚ
Fashaariboona ʻalayhi minal Ḥameem:
Then on top of that you will drink boiling water—
Verse 56:55
فَشٰرِبُوْنَ شُرْبَ الْهِیْمِ ۟ؕ
Fashaariboona shurbal heem.
and you will drink ˹it˺ like thirsty camels do.”
Verse 56:56
هٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ یَوْمَ الدِّیْنِ ۟ؕ
Haaẓaa nuzuluhum Yawmad Deen!
This will be their accommodation on the Day of Judgment.
Verse 56:57
نَحْنُ خَلَقْنٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُوْنَ ۟
Naḥnu khalaq̣naakum falawlaa tuṣaddiq̣oon?
It is We Who created you. Will you not then believe ˹in resurrection˺?
Verse 56:58
اَفَرَءَیْتُمْ مَّا تُمْنُوْنَ ۟ؕ
ʹAfaraʹaytum maa tumnoon?
Have you considered what you ejaculate?
Verse 56:59
ءَاَنْتُمْ تَخْلُقُوْنَهٗۤ اَمْ نَحْنُ الْخٰلِقُوْنَ ۟
ʹAʹañtum takhluq̣oonahooo ʹam Naḥnul Khaaliq̣oon?
Is it you who create ˹a child out of˺ it, or is it We Who do so?
Verse 56:60
نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَیْنَكُمُ الْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوْقِیْنَ ۟ۙ
Naḥnu q̣addarnaa baynakumul Mawta wa-maa Naḥnu bimasbooq̣een
We have ordained death for ˹all of˺ you, and We cannot be prevented
Verse 56:61
عَلٰۤی اَنْ نُّبَدِّلَ اَمْثَالَكُمْ وَنُنْشِئَكُمْ فِیْ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُوْنَ ۟
ʻAlaaa ʹan nubaddila ʹAms̤aalakum wa-nuñshiʹakum fee maa laa- taʻlamoon.
from transforming and recreating you in forms unknown to you.
Verse 56:62
وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ النَّشْاَةَ الْاُوْلٰی فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُوْنَ ۟
Wa-laq̣ad ʻalimtumun nashʹatal ʹoolaa falawlaa taẓakkaroon?
You already know how you were first created. Will you not then be mindful?
Verse 56:63
اَفَرَءَیْتُمْ مَّا تَحْرُثُوْنَ ۟ؕ
ʹAfaraʹaytum maa taḥrus̤oon?
Have you considered what you sow?
Verse 56:64
ءَاَنْتُمْ تَزْرَعُوْنَهٗۤ اَمْ نَحْنُ الزّٰرِعُوْنَ ۟
ʹAʹañtum tazraʻoonahooo ʹam Naḥnuz zaariʻoon?
Is it you who cause it to grow, or is it We Who do so?
Verse 56:65
لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنٰهُ حُطَامًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُوْنَ ۟
Law nashaaaʹu lajaʻal-naahu ḥuṭaamañ faz̤̣altum tafakkahoon:
If We willed, We could simply reduce this ˹harvest˺ to chaff, leaving you to lament,
Verse 56:66
اِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُوْنَ ۟ۙ
ʹInnaa lamug̣ramoon:
“We have truly suffered a ˹great˺ loss.
Verse 56:67
بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُوْمُوْنَ ۟
Bal naḥnu maḥroomoon.
In fact, we have been deprived ˹of our livelihood˺.”
Verse 56:68
اَفَرَءَیْتُمُ الْمَآءَ الَّذِیْ تَشْرَبُوْنَ ۟ؕ
ʹAfaraʹaytumul maaa ʹallaẓee tashraboon?
Have you considered the water you drink?
Verse 56:69
ءَاَنْتُمْ اَنْزَلْتُمُوْهُ مِنَ الْمُزْنِ اَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنْزِلُوْنَ ۟
ʹAʹañtum ʹañzaltumoohu minal muzni ʹam Naḥnul muñziloon?
Is it you who bring it down from the clouds, or is it We Who do so?
Verse 56:70
لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنٰهُ اُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُوْنَ ۟
Law nashaaaʹu jaʻalnaahu ʹujaajañ falawlaa tashkuroon?
If We willed, We could make it salty. Will you not then give thanks?
Verse 56:71
اَفَرَءَیْتُمُ النَّارَ الَّتِیْ تُوْرُوْنَ ۟ؕ
ʹAfaraʹaytumun naaral latee tooroon?
Have you considered the fire you kindle?
Verse 56:72
ءَاَنْتُمْ اَنْشَاْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَاۤ اَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنْشِـُٔوْنَ ۟
ʹAʹañtum ʹañshaʹtum shajaratahaaa ʹam Naḥnul muñshiʹoon?
Is it you who produce its trees, or is it We Who do so?
Verse 56:73
نَحْنُ جَعَلْنٰهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَّمَتَاعًا لِّلْمُقْوِیْنَ ۟ۚ
Naḥnu jaʻalnaahaa taẓkiratañw wamataaʻal lilmuq̣ween.
We have made it ˹as˺ a reminder ˹of the Hellfire˺ and a provision for the travellers.
Verse 56:74
فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِیْمِ ۟۠
Fasabbiḥ bismi Rabbikal ʻAz̤̣eem!
So glorify the Name of your Lord, the Greatest.
Verse 56:75
فَلَاۤ اُقْسِمُ بِمَوٰقِعِ النُّجُوْمِ ۟ۙ
Falaaa ʹuq̣simu bimawaaq̣iʻin Nujoom,―
So I do swear by the positions of the stars—
Verse 56:76
وَاِنَّهٗ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُوْنَ عَظِیْمٌ ۟ۙ
Wa-ʹinnahoo laq̣asamul law taʻlamoona ʻaz̤̣eem,―
and this, if only you knew, is indeed a great oath—
Verse 56:77
اِنَّهٗ لَقُرْاٰنٌ كَرِیْمٌ ۟ۙ
ʹInnahoo la-Q̣urʹaanuñ Kareem,
that this is truly a noble Quran,
Verse 56:78
فِیْ كِتٰبٍ مَّكْنُوْنٍ ۟ۙ
Fee Kitaabim maknoon,―
in a well-preserved Record,
Verse 56:79
لَّا یَمَسُّهٗۤ اِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُوْنَ ۟ؕ
Laa- yamassuhooo ʹillal muṭahharoon:
touched by none except the purified ˹angels˺.
Verse 56:80
تَنْزِیْلٌ مِّنْ رَّبِّ الْعٰلَمِیْنَ ۟
Tañzeelum mir Rabbil ʻAalameen.
˹It is˺ a revelation from the Lord of all worlds.
Verse 56:81
اَفَبِهٰذَا الْحَدِیْثِ اَنْتُمْ مُّدْهِنُوْنَ ۟ۙ
ʹAfabihaaẓal Ḥadees̤i ʹañtum mudhinoon?
How can you then take this message lightly,
Verse 56:82
وَتَجْعَلُوْنَ رِزْقَكُمْ اَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُوْنَ ۟
Wa-tajʻaloona rizq̣akum ʹannakum tukaẓẓiboon?
and repay ˹Allah for˺ your provisions with denial?
Verse 56:83
فَلَوْلَاۤ اِذَا بَلَغَتِ الْحُلْقُوْمَ ۟ۙ
Falawlaa ʹiẓaa balag̣atil ḥulq̣oom,―
Why then ˹are you helpless˺ when the soul ˹of a dying person˺ reaches ˹their˺ throat,
Verse 56:84
وَاَنْتُمْ حِیْنَىِٕذٍ تَنْظُرُوْنَ ۟ۙ
Wa-ʹañtum ḥeenaʹiẓiñ tañz̤̣uroon,―
while you are looking on?
Verse 56:85
وَنَحْنُ اَقْرَبُ اِلَیْهِ مِنْكُمْ وَلٰكِنْ لَّا تُبْصِرُوْنَ ۟
Wa-Naḥnu ʹaq̣rabu ʹilayhi miñkum wa-laakil laa tubṣiroon,―
And We are nearer to such a person than you, but you cannot see.
Verse 56:86
فَلَوْلَاۤ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ غَیْرَ مَدِیْنِیْنَ ۟ۙ
Falawlaaa ʹiñ kuñtum g̣ayra madeeneen,―
Now, if you are not subject to Our Will ˹as you claim˺,
Verse 56:87
تَرْجِعُوْنَهَاۤ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ صٰدِقِیْنَ ۟
Tarjiʻoonahaaa ʹiñ kuñtum ṣaadiq̣een?
bring that soul back, if what you say is true.
Verse 56:88
فَاَمَّاۤ اِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِیْنَ ۟ۙ
Faʹammaaa ʹiñ kaana minal Muq̣arrabeen,―
So, if the deceased is one of those brought near ˹to Us˺,
Verse 56:89
فَرَوْحٌ وَّرَیْحَانٌ ۙ۬ وَّجَنَّتُ نَعِیْمٍ ۟
Fa-Rawḥuñw Wa-Rayḥaanuñw Wa-Jannatu Naʻeem.
then ˹such a person will have˺ serenity, fragrance, and a Garden of Bliss.
Verse 56:90
وَاَمَّاۤ اِنْ كَانَ مِنْ اَصْحٰبِ الْیَمِیْنِ ۟ۙ
Wa-ʹammaaa ʹiñ kaana min ʹAṣḥaabil yameen.―
And if the deceased is one of the people of the right,
Verse 56:91
فَسَلٰمٌ لَّكَ مِنْ اَصْحٰبِ الْیَمِیْنِ ۟ؕ
Fa-Salaamul laka min Aṣḥaabil yameen.
then ˹they will be told,˺ “Greetings to you from the people of the right.”
Verse 56:92
وَاَمَّاۤ اِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُكَذِّبِیْنَ الضَّآلِّیْنَ ۟ۙ
Wa-ʹammaaa ʹiñ kaana minal Mukaẓẓibeenaḍ ḍaaalleen,
But if such person is one of the misguided deniers,
Verse 56:93
فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِیْمٍ ۟ۙ
Fanuzulum min ḥameem,―
then their accommodation will be boiling water ˹to drink˺
Verse 56:94
وَّتَصْلِیَةُ جَحِیْمٍ ۟
Wa-taṣliyatu Jaḥeem.
and burning in Hellfire.
Verse 56:95
اِنَّ هٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ الْیَقِیْنِ ۟ۚ
ʹInna haaẓaa lahuwa Ḥaq̣q̣ul Yaq̣een.
Indeed, this is the absolute truth.
Verse 56:96
فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِیْمِ ۟۠
Fasabbiḥ bismi Rabbikal ʻAz̤̣eem.
So glorify the Name of your Lord, the Greatest.
