Surah Adh-Dhariyat
Surah Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) is Surah 51 of the Holy Quran, a Meccan Surah with 60 verses, available here in English.
Verse 51:1
وَالذّٰرِیٰتِ ذَرْوًا ۟ۙ
Waẓ-Ẓaariyaati ẓarwaa.
By the winds scattering ˹dust˺,
Verse 51:2
فَالْحٰمِلٰتِ وِقْرًا ۟ۙ
Falḥaamilaati wiq̣raa.
and ˹the clouds˺ loaded with rain,
Verse 51:3
فَالْجٰرِیٰتِ یُسْرًا ۟ۙ
Faljaariyaati yusraa.
and ˹the ships˺ gliding with ease,
Verse 51:4
فَالْمُقَسِّمٰتِ اَمْرًا ۟ۙ
Falmuq̣assimaati ʹAmraa.
and ˹the angels˺ administering affairs by ˹Allah’s˺ command!
Verse 51:5
اِنَّمَا تُوْعَدُوْنَ لَصَادِقٌ ۟ۙ
ʹInnamaa tooʻadoona laṣaadiq̣;
Indeed, what you are promised is true.
Verse 51:6
وَّاِنَّ الدِّیْنَ لَوَاقِعٌ ۟ؕ
Wa-ʹinnad Deena lawaaq̣iʻ.
And the Judgment will certainly come to pass.
Verse 51:7
وَالسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ الْحُبُكِ ۟ۙ
Wassamaaaʹi ẓaatil Ḥubuk,
˹And˺ by the heavens in their marvellous design!
Verse 51:8
اِنَّكُمْ لَفِیْ قَوْلٍ مُّخْتَلِفٍ ۟ۙ
ʹInnakum lafee q̣awlim mukhtalif.
Surely you are ˹lost˺ in conflicting views ˹regarding the truth˺.
Verse 51:9
یُّؤْفَكُ عَنْهُ مَنْ اُفِكَ ۟ؕ
Yuʹfaku ʻanhu man ʹufik.
Only those ˹destined to be˺ deluded are turned away from it.
Verse 51:10
قُتِلَ الْخَرّٰصُوْنَ ۟ۙ
Q̣utilal kharraaṣoon,―
Condemned are the liars—
Verse 51:11
الَّذِیْنَ هُمْ فِیْ غَمْرَةٍ سَاهُوْنَ ۟ۙ
ʹAllaẓeena hum fee g̣amratiñ saahoon:
those who are ˹steeped˺ in ignorance, totally heedless.
Verse 51:12
یَسْـَٔلُوْنَ اَیَّانَ یَوْمُ الدِّیْنِ ۟ؕ
Yasʹaloona ʹayyaana Yawmud Deen?
They ask ˹mockingly˺, “When is this Day of Judgment?”
Verse 51:13
یَوْمَ هُمْ عَلَی النَّارِ یُفْتَنُوْنَ ۟
Yawma hum ʻalan Naari yuftanoon!
˹It is˺ the Day they will be tormented over the Fire.
Verse 51:14
ذُوْقُوْا فِتْنَتَكُمْ ؕ هٰذَا الَّذِیْ كُنْتُمْ بِهٖ تَسْتَعْجِلُوْنَ ۟
Ẓooq̣oo fitnatakum! Haa-ẓal laẓee kuñtum̃ bihee tas-taʻjiloon!
˹They will be told,˺ “Taste your torment! This is what you sought to hasten.”
Verse 51:15
اِنَّ الْمُتَّقِیْنَ فِیْ جَنّٰتٍ وَّعُیُوْنٍ ۟ۙ
ʹInnal Muttaq̣eena fee Jannaatiñw Waʻuyoon,
Indeed, the righteous will be amid Gardens and springs,
Verse 51:16
اٰخِذِیْنَ مَاۤ اٰتٰىهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ ؕ اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوْا قَبْلَ ذٰلِكَ مُحْسِنِیْنَ ۟ؕ
ʹAakhiẓeena maaa ʹaataahum Rabbuhum: ʹinnahum kaanoo q̣abla ẓaalika Muḥsineen.
˹joyfully˺ receiving what their Lord will grant them. Before this ˹reward˺ they were truly good-doers ˹in the world˺:
Verse 51:17
كَانُوْا قَلِیْلًا مِّنَ الَّیْلِ مَا یَهْجَعُوْنَ ۟
Kaanoo q̣aleelam minal layli maa- yahjaʻoon:
they used to sleep only little in the night,
Verse 51:18
وَبِالْاَسْحَارِ هُمْ یَسْتَغْفِرُوْنَ ۟
Wa-bilʹasḥaari hum yastag̣firoon:
and pray for forgiveness before dawn.
Verse 51:19
وَفِیْۤ اَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ لِّلسَّآىِٕلِ وَالْمَحْرُوْمِ ۟
Wa-feee ʹamwaalihim ḥaq̣q̣ul lissaaaʹili walmaḥroom.
And in their wealth there was a rightful share ˹fulfilled˺ for the beggar and the poor.
Verse 51:20
وَفِی الْاَرْضِ اٰیٰتٌ لِّلْمُوْقِنِیْنَ ۟ۙ
Wa-fil ʹarḍi ʹAayaatul lil-Mooq̣ineen,
There are ˹countless˺ signs on earth for those with sure faith,
Verse 51:21
وَفِیْۤ اَنْفُسِكُمْ ؕ اَفَلَا تُبْصِرُوْنَ ۟
Wa-feee ʹañfusikum ʹafalaa tubṣiroon?
as there are within yourselves. Can you not see?
Verse 51:22
وَفِی السَّمَآءِ رِزْقُكُمْ وَمَا تُوْعَدُوْنَ ۟
Wa-fis samaaaʹi Rizq̣ukum wa-maa tooʻadoon.
In heaven is your sustenance and whatever you are promised.
Verse 51:23
فَوَرَبِّ السَّمَآءِ وَالْاَرْضِ اِنَّهٗ لَحَقٌّ مِّثْلَ مَاۤ اَنَّكُمْ تَنْطِقُوْنَ ۟۠
Fawa-Rabbis samaaaʹi wal-ʹarḍi ʹinnahoo la-Ḥaq̣q̣um mis̤la maaa ʹannakum tañṭiq̣oon.
Then by the Lord of heaven and earth! ˹All˺ this is certainly as true as ˹the fact that˺ you can speak!
Verse 51:24
هَلْ اَتٰىكَ حَدِیْثُ ضَیْفِ اِبْرٰهِیْمَ الْمُكْرَمِیْنَ ۟ۘ
Hal ʹataaka ḥadees̤u ḍayfi ʹibraaheemal mukrameen?
Has the story of Abraham’s honoured guests reached you ˹O Prophet˺?
Verse 51:25
اِذْ دَخَلُوْا عَلَیْهِ فَقَالُوْا سَلٰمًا ؕ قَالَ سَلٰمٌ ۚ قَوْمٌ مُّنْكَرُوْنَ ۟
ʹIẓ dakhaloo ʻalayhi faq̣aaloo Salaamaa! Q̣aala Salaam! Q̣awmum muñkaroon.
˹Remember˺ when they entered his presence and greeted ˹him with˺, “Peace!” He replied, “Peace ˹be upon you˺!” ˹Then he said to himself,˺ “˹These are˺ an unfamiliar people.”
Verse 51:26
فَرَاغَ اِلٰۤی اَهْلِهٖ فَجَآءَ بِعِجْلٍ سَمِیْنٍ ۟ۙ
Faraag̣a ʹilaaa ʹahlihee fajaaaʹa biʻijliñ sameen,
Then he slipped off to his family and brought a fat ˹roasted˺ calf,
Verse 51:27
فَقَرَّبَهٗۤ اِلَیْهِمْ قَالَ اَلَا تَاْكُلُوْنَ ۟ؗ
Faq̣arrabahooo ʹilayhim Q̣aala ʹalaa taʹkuloon?
and placed it before them, asking, “Will you not eat?”
Verse 51:28
فَاَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِیْفَةً ؕ قَالُوْا لَا تَخَفْ ؕ وَبَشَّرُوْهُ بِغُلٰمٍ عَلِیْمٍ ۟
Faʹawjasa minhum kheefaḥ Q̣aaloo laa- takhaf! wa-bashsharoohu big̣ulaamin ʻaleem.
˹They did not eat,˺ so he grew fearful of them. They reassured ˹him˺, “Do not be afraid,” and gave him good news of a knowledgeable son.
Verse 51:29
فَاَقْبَلَتِ امْرَاَتُهٗ فِیْ صَرَّةٍ فَصَكَّتْ وَجْهَهَا وَقَالَتْ عَجُوْزٌ عَقِیْمٌ ۟
Faʹaq̣balatim raʹatuhoo fee ṣarratiñ faṣakkat wajhahaa wa-q̣aalat ʻajoozun ʻaq̣eem!
Then his wife came forward with a cry, clasping her forehead ˹in astonishment˺, exclaiming, “˹A baby from˺ a barren, old woman!”
Verse 51:30
قَالُوْا كَذٰلِكِ ۙ قَالَ رَبُّكِ ؕ اِنَّهٗ هُوَ الْحَكِیْمُ الْعَلِیْمُ ۟
Q̣aaloo kaẓaaliki q̣aala Rabbuk: ʹinnahoo Huwal Ḥakeemul ʻAleem.
They replied, “Such has your Lord decreed. He is truly the All-Wise, All-Knowing.”
Verse 51:31
قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ اَیُّهَا الْمُرْسَلُوْنَ ۟
Q̣aala famaa khaṭbukum ʹayyuhal Mursaloon?
˹Later,˺ Abraham asked, “What is your mission, O messengers?”
Verse 51:32
قَالُوْۤا اِنَّاۤ اُرْسِلْنَاۤ اِلٰی قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِیْنَ ۟ۙ
Q̣aalooo ʹinnaaa ʹursilnaaa ʹilaa q̣awmim mujrimeen;―
They replied, “We have actually been sent to a wicked people,
Verse 51:33
لِنُرْسِلَ عَلَیْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّنْ طِیْنٍ ۟ۙ
Linursila ʻalayhim ḥijaaratam miñ ṭeen.
to send upon them stones of ˹baked˺ clay,
Verse 51:34
مُّسَوَّمَةً عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ لِلْمُسْرِفِیْنَ ۟
Musawwamatan ʻiñda Rabbika lilmusrifeen.
marked by your Lord for the transgressors.”
Verse 51:35
فَاَخْرَجْنَا مَنْ كَانَ فِیْهَا مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ ۟ۚ
Faʹakhrajnaa mañ kaana feehaa minal Muʹmineen.
Then ˹before the torment˺ We evacuated the believers from the city.
Verse 51:36
فَمَا وَجَدْنَا فِیْهَا غَیْرَ بَیْتٍ مِّنَ الْمُسْلِمِیْنَ ۟ۚ
Famaa wa-jadnaa feeha g̣ayra baytim minal Muslimeen:
But We only found one family that had submitted ˹to Allah˺.
Verse 51:37
وَتَرَكْنَا فِیْهَاۤ اٰیَةً لِّلَّذِیْنَ یَخَافُوْنَ الْعَذَابَ الْاَلِیْمَ ۟ؕ
Wa-taraknaa feehaaa ʹAayatal lillaẓeena yakhaafoonal ʻAẓaabal ʹaleem.
And We have left a sign there ˹as a lesson˺ for those who fear the painful punishment.
Verse 51:38
وَفِیْ مُوْسٰۤی اِذْ اَرْسَلْنٰهُ اِلٰی فِرْعَوْنَ بِسُلْطٰنٍ مُّبِیْنٍ ۟
Wa-fee Moosaaa ʹiẓ ʹarsalnaahu ʹilaa Firʻawna bisulṭaanim mubeen.
And in ˹the story of˺ Moses ˹was another lesson,˺ when We sent him to Pharaoh with compelling proof,
Verse 51:39
فَتَوَلّٰی بِرُكْنِهٖ وَقَالَ سٰحِرٌ اَوْ مَجْنُوْنٌ ۟
Fatawallaa biruknihee wa-q̣aala ˹saaḥirun ʹaw majnoon!
but Pharaoh was carried away by his power, saying ˹of Moses˺, “A magician or a madman!”
Verse 51:40
فَاَخَذْنٰهُ وَجُنُوْدَهٗ فَنَبَذْنٰهُمْ فِی الْیَمِّ وَهُوَ مُلِیْمٌ ۟ؕ
Faʹakhaẓnaahu wa-junoo-dahoo fanabaẓnaahum fil yammi wa-huwa muleem.
So We seized him and his soldiers, casting them into the sea while he was blameworthy.
Verse 51:41
وَفِیْ عَادٍ اِذْ اَرْسَلْنَا عَلَیْهِمُ الرِّیْحَ الْعَقِیْمَ ۟ۚ
Wa-fee ʻAadin ʹiẓ ʹarsalnaa ʻalayhimur Reeḥal ʻaq̣eem:
And in ˹the story of˺ ’Âd ˹was another lesson,˺ when We sent against them the devastating wind.
Verse 51:42
مَا تَذَرُ مِنْ شَیْءٍ اَتَتْ عَلَیْهِ اِلَّا جَعَلَتْهُ كَالرَّمِیْمِ ۟ؕ
Maa- taẓaru miñ shayʹin ʹatat ʻalayhi ʹillaa jaʻalathu karrameem.
There was nothing it came upon that it did not reduce to ashes.
Verse 51:43
وَفِیْ ثَمُوْدَ اِذْ قِیْلَ لَهُمْ تَمَتَّعُوْا حَتّٰی حِیْنٍ ۟
Wa-fee S̤amooda ʹiẓ q̣eela lahum tamattaʻoo ḥattaa ḥeen!
And in ˹the story of˺ Thamûd ˹was another lesson,˺ when they were told, “Enjoy yourselves ˹only˺ for a ˹short˺ while.”
Verse 51:44
فَعَتَوْا عَنْ اَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ فَاَخَذَتْهُمُ الصّٰعِقَةُ وَهُمْ یَنْظُرُوْنَ ۟
Faʻataw ʻan ʹAmri Rabbihim faʹakhaẓathumuṣ ṣaaʻiq̣atu wa-hum yañz̤̣uroon.
Still they persisted in defying the commands of their Lord, so they were overtaken by a ˹mighty˺ blast while they were looking on.
Verse 51:45
فَمَا اسْتَطَاعُوْا مِنْ قِیَامٍ وَّمَا كَانُوْا مُنْتَصِرِیْنَ ۟ۙ
famas taṭaaʻoo miñ q̣iyaamiñw wamaa kaanoo muñtaṣireen.
Then they were not able to rise up, nor were they helped.
Verse 51:46
وَقَوْمَ نُوْحٍ مِّنْ قَبْلُ ؕ اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوْا قَوْمًا فٰسِقِیْنَ ۟۠
Wa-Q̣awma Nooḥim miñ q̣abl: ʹinnahum kaanoo q̣awmañ faasiq̣een.
And the people of Noah ˹had also been destroyed˺ earlier. They were truly a rebellious people.
Verse 51:47
وَالسَّمَآءَ بَنَیْنٰهَا بِاَیْىدٍ وَّاِنَّا لَمُوْسِعُوْنَ ۟
Was-Samaaaʹa banaynaahaa biʹaydiñw waʹInnaa lamoosiʻoon.
We built the universe with ˹great˺ might, and We are certainly expanding ˹it˺.
Verse 51:48
وَالْاَرْضَ فَرَشْنٰهَا فَنِعْمَ الْمٰهِدُوْنَ ۟
Wal-ʹarḍa farashnaahaa faniʻmal maahidoon!
As for the earth, We spread it out. How superbly did We smooth it out!
Verse 51:49
وَمِنْ كُلِّ شَیْءٍ خَلَقْنَا زَوْجَیْنِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُوْنَ ۟
Wa-miñ kulli shayʹin khalaq̣naa zawjayni laʻallakum taẓakkaroon.
And We created pairs of all things so perhaps you would be mindful.
Verse 51:50
فَفِرُّوْۤا اِلَی اللّٰهِ ؕ اِنِّیْ لَكُمْ مِّنْهُ نَذِیْرٌ مُّبِیْنٌ ۟ۚ
Fafirrooo ʹilal laah: ʹinnee lakum minhu Naẓeerum mubeen!
So ˹proclaim, O Prophet˺: “Flee to Allah! I am truly sent by Him with a clear warning to you.
Verse 51:51
وَلَا تَجْعَلُوْا مَعَ اللّٰهِ اِلٰهًا اٰخَرَ ؕ اِنِّیْ لَكُمْ مِّنْهُ نَذِیْرٌ مُّبِیْنٌ ۟
Wa-laa tajʻaloo maʻal laahi ʹilaahan ʹaakhar: ʹinnee lakum minhu Naẓeerum mubeen!
And do not set up another god with Allah. I am truly sent by Him with a clear warning to you.”
Verse 51:52
كَذٰلِكَ مَاۤ اَتَی الَّذِیْنَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ مِّنْ رَّسُوْلٍ اِلَّا قَالُوْا سَاحِرٌ اَوْ مَجْنُوْنٌ ۟ۚ
Kaẓaalika maaa ʹatal laẓeena miñ q̣ablihim mir Rasoolin ʹillaa q̣aaloo saaḥirun ʹaw majnoon!
Similarly, no messenger came to those before them without being told: “A magician or a madman!”
Verse 51:53
اَتَوَاصَوْا بِهٖ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُوْنَ ۟ۚ
ʹAtawaaṣaw bih? Bal hum q̣awmuñ ṭaag̣oon!
Have they passed this ˹cliché˺ down to one another? In fact, they have ˹all˺ been a transgressing people.
Verse 51:54
فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ فَمَاۤ اَنْتَ بِمَلُوْمٍ ۟
Fatawalla ʻanhum famaaa ʹañta bimaloom.
So ˹now˺ turn away from them ˹O Prophet˺, for you will not be blamed.
Verse 51:55
وَّذَكِّرْ فَاِنَّ الذِّكْرٰی تَنْفَعُ الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ ۟
Wa-ẓakkir faʹinnaẓ Ẓikraa tañfaʻul Muʹmineen.
But ˹continue to˺ remind. For certainly reminders benefit the believers.
Verse 51:56
وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْاِنْسَ اِلَّا لِیَعْبُدُوْنِ ۟
Wa-maa khalaq̣tul Jinna wal-ʹiñsa ʹillaa liyaʻbudoon.
I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me.
Verse 51:57
مَاۤ اُرِیْدُ مِنْهُمْ مِّنْ رِّزْقٍ وَّمَاۤ اُرِیْدُ اَنْ یُّطْعِمُوْنِ ۟
Maaa ʹureedu minhum mir Rizq̣iñw Wamaaa ʹureedu ʹañy yuṭʻimoon.
I seek no provision from them, nor do I need them to feed Me.
Verse 51:58
اِنَّ اللّٰهَ هُوَ الرَّزَّاقُ ذُو الْقُوَّةِ الْمَتِیْنُ ۟
ʹInnal laaha Huwar Razzaaq̣u Ẓul Q̣uwwatil Mateen.
Indeed, Allah ˹alone˺ is the Supreme Provider—Lord of all Power, Ever Mighty.
Verse 51:59
فَاِنَّ لِلَّذِیْنَ ظَلَمُوْا ذَنُوْبًا مِّثْلَ ذَنُوْبِ اَصْحٰبِهِمْ فَلَا یَسْتَعْجِلُوْنِ ۟
Faʹinna lillaẓeena z̤̣alamoo ẓanoobam mis̤la ẓanoobi ʹaṣḥaabihim falaa yastaʻjiloon!
The wrongdoers will certainly have a share ˹of the torment˺ like that of their predecessors. So do not let them ask Me to hasten ˹it˺.
Verse 51:60
فَوَیْلٌ لِّلَّذِیْنَ كَفَرُوْا مِنْ یَّوْمِهِمُ الَّذِیْ یُوْعَدُوْنَ ۟۠
Fawaylul lillaẓeena kafaroo miñy Yawmihimul laẓee yooʻadoon
Woe then to the disbelievers when they face their Day which they are warned of!
