Surah Qaf

Verse 50:1

قٓ ۚ۫ وَالْقُرْاٰنِ الْمَجِیْدِ ۟ۚ

Q̣AAAF: Wal-Q̣urʹaanil Majeed.

Qãf. By the glorious Quran!

Verse 50:2

بَلْ عَجِبُوْۤا اَنْ جَآءَهُمْ مُّنْذِرٌ مِّنْهُمْ فَقَالَ الْكٰفِرُوْنَ هٰذَا شَیْءٌ عَجِیْبٌ ۟ۚ

Bal ʻajibooo ʹañ jaaaʹahum Muñẓirum minhum faq̣aalal kaafiroona haaẓaa shayʹun ʻajeeb!

˹All will be resurrected,˺ yet the deniers are astonished that a warner has come to them from among themselves ˹warning of resurrection˺. So the disbelievers say, “This is an astonishing thing!

Verse 50:3

ءَاِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا ۚ ذٰلِكَ رَجْعٌ بَعِیْدٌ ۟

ʹA-ʹiẓaa mitnaa wa-kunnaa turaabaa? Ẓaalika Rajʻum baʻeed!

˹Will we be returned to life,˺ when we are dead and reduced to dust? Such a return is impossible.”

Verse 50:4

قَدْ عَلِمْنَا مَا تَنْقُصُ الْاَرْضُ مِنْهُمْ ۚ وَعِنْدَنَا كِتٰبٌ حَفِیْظٌ ۟

Q̣ad ʻalimnaa maa- tañq̣uṣul ʹarḍu minhum: wa-ʻiñdanaa Kitaabun Hafeez̤̣.

We certainly know what the earth consumes of them ˹after their death˺, and with us is a well-preserved Record.

Verse 50:5

بَلْ كَذَّبُوْا بِالْحَقِّ لَمَّا جَآءَهُمْ فَهُمْ فِیْۤ اَمْرٍ مَّرِیْجٍ ۟

Bal kaẓẓaboo bil-Ḥaq̣q̣i lammaa jaaaʹahum fahum feee ʹamrim mareej.

In fact, they reject the truth when it has come to them, so they are in a confused state.

Verse 50:6

اَفَلَمْ یَنْظُرُوْۤا اِلَی السَّمَآءِ فَوْقَهُمْ كَیْفَ بَنَیْنٰهَا وَزَیَّنّٰهَا وَمَا لَهَا مِنْ فُرُوْجٍ ۟

ʹAfalam yañz̤̣urooo ʹilas samaaaʹi fawq̣ahum kayfa banaynaahaa wa-zayyannaahaa wa-maa lahaa miñ furooj?

Have they not then looked at the sky above them: how We built it and adorned it ˹with stars˺, leaving it flawless?

Verse 50:7

وَالْاَرْضَ مَدَدْنٰهَا وَاَلْقَیْنَا فِیْهَا رَوَاسِیَ وَاَنْۢبَتْنَا فِیْهَا مِنْ كُلِّ زَوْجٍ بَهِیْجٍ ۟ۙ

Wal-ʹarḍa madadnaahaa wa-ʹalq̣aynaa feehaa rawaasiya wa-ʹambatnaa feehaa miñ kulli zawjim baheej,―

As for the earth, We spread it out and placed upon it firm mountains, and produced in it every type of pleasant plant—

Verse 50:8

تَبْصِرَةً وَّذِكْرٰی لِكُلِّ عَبْدٍ مُّنِیْبٍ ۟

Tabṣiratañw Waẓikraa likulli ʻabdim muneeb.

˹all as˺ an insight and a reminder to every servant who turns ˹to Allah˺.

Verse 50:9

وَنَزَّلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَآءِ مَآءً مُّبٰرَكًا فَاَنْۢبَتْنَا بِهٖ جَنّٰتٍ وَّحَبَّ الْحَصِیْدِ ۟ۙ

Wa-nazzalnaa minas samaaaʹi maaaʹam mubaarakañ faʹambatnaa bihee jannatiñw waḥabbal ḥaṣeed;

And We send down blessed rain from the sky, bringing forth gardens and grains for harvest,

Verse 50:10

وَالنَّخْلَ بٰسِقٰتٍ لَّهَا طَلْعٌ نَّضِیْدٌ ۟ۙ

Wannakhla baasiq̣aatil lahaa ṭalʻun naḍeed;―

and towering palm trees ˹loaded˺ with clustered fruit,

Verse 50:11

رِّزْقًا لِّلْعِبَادِ ۙ وَاَحْیَیْنَا بِهٖ بَلْدَةً مَّیْتًا ؕ كَذٰلِكَ الْخُرُوْجُ ۟

Rizq̣al lilʻibaadi wa-ʹaḥyaynaa bihee baldatam maytaa. Kaẓaalikal khurooj.

˹as˺ a provision for ˹Our˺ servants. And with this ˹rain˺ We revive a lifeless land. Similar is the emergence ˹from the graves˺.

Verse 50:12

كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوْحٍ وَّاَصْحٰبُ الرَّسِّ وَثَمُوْدُ ۟ۙ

Kaẓẓabat q̣ablahum Q̣awmu Nooḥiñw waʹAṣḥaabur Rassi wa-S̤amood,

Before them, the people of Noah denied ˹the truth,˺ as did the people of the Water-pit, Thamûd,

Verse 50:13

وَعَادٌ وَّفِرْعَوْنُ وَاِخْوَانُ لُوْطٍ ۟ۙ

Wa-ʻAaduñw Wa-Firʻawnu wa-ʹIkhwaanu Looṭ

’Ȃd, Pharaoh, the kinfolk of Lot,

Verse 50:14

وَّاَصْحٰبُ الْاَیْكَةِ وَقَوْمُ تُبَّعٍ ؕ كُلٌّ كَذَّبَ الرُّسُلَ فَحَقَّ وَعِیْدِ ۟

Wa-ʹAṣḥaabul ʹaykati wa-Q̣awmu Tubbaʻ; kulluñ kaẓẓabar rusula faḥaq̣q̣a Waʻeed.

the residents of the Forest, and the people of Tubba’. Each rejected ˹their˺ messenger, so My warning was fulfilled.

Verse 50:15

اَفَعَیِیْنَا بِالْخَلْقِ الْاَوَّلِ ؕ بَلْ هُمْ فِیْ لَبْسٍ مِّنْ خَلْقٍ جَدِیْدٍ ۟۠

ʹAfaʻayeenaa bilkhalq̣il ʹawwal: bal hum fee labsim min khalq̣iñ jadeed?

Were We incapable of creating ˹them˺ the first time? In fact, they are in doubt about ˹their˺ re-creation.

Verse 50:16

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ وَنَعْلَمُ مَا تُوَسْوِسُ بِهٖ نَفْسُهٗ ۖۚ وَنَحْنُ اَقْرَبُ اِلَیْهِ مِنْ حَبْلِ الْوَرِیْدِ ۟

Wa-laq̣ad khalaq̣nal ʹiñsaana Wanaʻlamu maa- tuwaswisu bihee nafsuh: wa-Naḥnu ʹaq̣rabu ʹilayhi min ḥablil wareed.

Indeed, ˹it is˺ We ˹Who˺ created humankind and ˹fully˺ know what their souls whisper to them, and We are closer to them than ˹their˺ jugular vein.

Verse 50:17

اِذْ یَتَلَقَّی الْمُتَلَقِّیٰنِ عَنِ الْیَمِیْنِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ قَعِیْدٌ ۟

ʹIẓ yatalaq̣q̣al mutalaq̣q̣iyaani ʻanil yameeni wa-ʻanish shimaali q̣aʻeed.

As the two recording-angels—˹one˺ sitting to the right, and ˹the other to˺ the left—note ˹everything˺,

Verse 50:18

مَا یَلْفِظُ مِنْ قَوْلٍ اِلَّا لَدَیْهِ رَقِیْبٌ عَتِیْدٌ ۟

Maa- yalfiz̤̣u miñ q̣awlin ʹillaa ladayhi raq̣eebun ʻateed.

not a word does a person utter without having a ˹vigilant˺ observer ready ˹to write it down˺.

Verse 50:19

وَجَآءَتْ سَكْرَةُ الْمَوْتِ بِالْحَقِّ ؕ ذٰلِكَ مَا كُنْتَ مِنْهُ تَحِیْدُ ۟

Wa-jaaaʹat sakratul mawṭi bilḥaq̣q̣: ẓaalika maa- kuñta minhu taḥeed!

˹Ultimately,˺ with the throes of death will come the truth. This is what you were trying to escape!

Verse 50:20

وَنُفِخَ فِی الصُّوْرِ ؕ ذٰلِكَ یَوْمُ الْوَعِیْدِ ۟

Wa-nufikha fiṣ Ṣoor: ẓaalika Yawmul Waʻeed.

And the Trumpet will be blown. This is the Day ˹you were˺ warned of.

Verse 50:21

وَجَآءَتْ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَّعَهَا سَآىِٕقٌ وَّشَهِیْدٌ ۟

Wa-jaaaʹat kullu nafsim maʻahaa saaaʹiq̣uñw washaheed.

Each soul will come forth with an angel to drive it and another to testify.

Verse 50:22

لَقَدْ كُنْتَ فِیْ غَفْلَةٍ مِّنْ هٰذَا فَكَشَفْنَا عَنْكَ غِطَآءَكَ فَبَصَرُكَ الْیَوْمَ حَدِیْدٌ ۟

Laq̣ad kuñta fee g̣aflatim min haaẓaa fakashafnaa ʻañka g̣iṭaaaʹaka fabaṣarukal Yawma ḥadeed!

˹It will be said to the denier,˺ “You were totally heedless of this. Now We have lifted this veil of yours, so Today your sight is sharp!”

Verse 50:23

وَقَالَ قَرِیْنُهٗ هٰذَا مَا لَدَیَّ عَتِیْدٌ ۟ؕ

Wa-q̣aala Q̣areenuhoo haaẓaa maa- ladayya ʻateed!

And one’s accompanying-angel will say, “Here is the record ready with me.”

Verse 50:24

اَلْقِیَا فِیْ جَهَنَّمَ كُلَّ كَفَّارٍ عَنِیْدٍ ۟ۙ

ʹAlq̣iyaa fee Jahannama kulla kaffaarin ʻaneed,

˹It will be said to both angels,˺ “Throw into Hell every stubborn disbeliever,

Verse 50:25

مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَیْرِ مُعْتَدٍ مُّرِیْبِ ۟ۙ

Mannaaʻil lilkhayri muʻtadim mureeb;

withholder of good, transgressor, and doubter,

Verse 50:26

لَّذِیْ جَعَلَ مَعَ اللّٰهِ اِلٰهًا اٰخَرَ فَاَلْقِیٰهُ فِی الْعَذَابِ الشَّدِیْدِ ۟

ʹAllaẓee jaʻala maʻal laahi ʹilaahan ʹaakhara faʹalq̣iyaahu fil ʻAẓaabish shadeed.

who set up another god with Allah. So cast them into the severe punishment.”

Verse 50:27

قَالَ قَرِیْنُهٗ رَبَّنَا مَاۤ اَطْغَیْتُهٗ وَلٰكِنْ كَانَ فِیْ ضَلٰلٍۢ بَعِیْدٍ ۟

Q̣aala Q̣areenuhoo Rabbanaa maaa ʹaṭg̣aytuhoo wa-laakiñ kaana fee ḍalaalim baʻeed.

One’s ˹devilish˺ associate will say, “Our Lord! I did not make them transgress. Rather, they were far astray ˹on their own˺.”

Verse 50:28

قَالَ لَا تَخْتَصِمُوْا لَدَیَّ وَقَدْ قَدَّمْتُ اِلَیْكُمْ بِالْوَعِیْدِ ۟

Q̣aala laa- takhtaṣimoo ladayya wa-q̣ad q̣addamtu ʹilaykum̃ bilwaʻeed.

Allah will respond, “Do not dispute in My presence, since I had already given you a warning.

Verse 50:29

مَا یُبَدَّلُ الْقَوْلُ لَدَیَّ وَمَاۤ اَنَا بِظَلَّامٍ لِّلْعَبِیْدِ ۟۠

Maa- yubaddalul Q̣awlu ladayya wa-maaa ʹana biz̤̣al-laamil lilʻAbeed.

My Word cannot be changed, nor am I unjust to ˹My˺ creation.”

Verse 50:30

یَوْمَ نَقُوْلُ لِجَهَنَّمَ هَلِ امْتَلَاْتِ وَتَقُوْلُ هَلْ مِنْ مَّزِیْدٍ ۟

Yawma naq̣oolu li-Jahannama halim talaʹti wa-taq̣oolu hal mim mazeed?

˹Beware of˺ the Day We will ask Hell, “Are you full ˹yet˺?” And it will respond, “Are there any more?”

Verse 50:31

وَاُزْلِفَتِ الْجَنَّةُ لِلْمُتَّقِیْنَ غَیْرَ بَعِیْدٍ ۟

Wa-ʹuzlifatil Jannatu lil-Muttaq̣eena g̣ayra baʻeed.

And Paradise will be brought near to the righteous, not far off.

Verse 50:32

هٰذَا مَا تُوْعَدُوْنَ لِكُلِّ اَوَّابٍ حَفِیْظٍ ۟ۚ

Haaẓaa maa- tooʻadoona likulli ʹawwaabin ḥafeez̤̣,―

˹And it will be said to them,˺ “This is what you were promised, for whoever ˹constantly˺ turned ˹to Allah˺ and kept up ˹His commandments˺—

Verse 50:33

مَنْ خَشِیَ الرَّحْمٰنَ بِالْغَیْبِ وَجَآءَ بِقَلْبٍ مُّنِیْبِ ۟ۙ

Man khashiyar Raḥmaana bilg̣aybi wa-jaaaʹa biq̣albim muneeb:

who were in awe of the Most Compassionate without seeing ˹Him˺, and have come with a heart turning ˹only to Him˺.

Verse 50:34

دْخُلُوْهَا بِسَلٰمٍ ؕ ذٰلِكَ یَوْمُ الْخُلُوْدِ ۟

ʹUdkhuloohaa bi-Salaam; ẓaalika Yawmul Khulood!

Enter it in peace. This is the Day of eternal life!”

Verse 50:35

لَهُمْ مَّا یَشَآءُوْنَ فِیْهَا وَلَدَیْنَا مَزِیْدٌ ۟

Lahum maa yashaaaʹoona feehaa wa-Ladaynaa mazeed.

There they will have whatever they desire, and with Us is ˹even˺ more.

Verse 50:36

وَكَمْ اَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُمْ مِّنْ قَرْنٍ هُمْ اَشَدُّ مِنْهُمْ بَطْشًا فَنَقَّبُوْا فِی الْبِلَادِ ؕ هَلْ مِنْ مَّحِیْصٍ ۟

Wa-kam ʹahlaknaa q̣ablahum miñ q̣arnin hum ʹashaddu minhum baṭshañ fanaq̣q̣aboo fil bilaad? Hal mim maḥeeṣ?

˹Imagine˺ how many peoples We destroyed before them, who were far mightier than them. Then ˹when the torment came,˺ they ˹desperately˺ sought refuge in the land. ˹But˺ was there any escape?

Verse 50:37

اِنَّ فِیْ ذٰلِكَ لَذِكْرٰی لِمَنْ كَانَ لَهٗ قَلْبٌ اَوْ اَلْقَی السَّمْعَ وَهُوَ شَهِیْدٌ ۟

ʹInna fee ẓaalika la-Ẓikraa limañ kaana lahoo q̣albun ʹaw ʹalq̣as samʻa wa-huwa shaheed.

Surely in this is a reminder for whoever has a ˹mindful˺ heart and lends an attentive ear.

Verse 50:38

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضَ وَمَا بَیْنَهُمَا فِیْ سِتَّةِ اَیَّامٍ ۖۗ وَّمَا مَسَّنَا مِنْ لُّغُوْبٍ ۟

Wa-laq̣ad khalaq̣nas samaawaati wal-ʹarḍa wa-maa baynahumaa fee Sittati ʹAyyaam; wa-maa massanaa mil lug̣oob.

Indeed, We created the heavens and the earth and everything in between in six Days, and We were not ˹even˺ touched with fatigue.

Verse 50:39

فَاصْبِرْ عَلٰی مَا یَقُوْلُوْنَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوْعِ الشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ الْغُرُوْبِ ۟ۚ

Faṣbir ʻalaa maa- yaq̣ooloona wa-sabbiḥ bi-Ḥamdi Rabbika q̣abla ṭulooʻish shamsi wa-q̣ablal g̣uroob,―

So be patient ˹O Prophet˺ with what they say. And glorify the praises of your Lord before sunrise and before sunset.

Verse 50:40

وَمِنَ الَّیْلِ فَسَبِّحْهُ وَاَدْبَارَ السُّجُوْدِ ۟

Wa-minal layli fasabbiḥhu wa-ʹadbaaras sujood.

And glorify Him during part of the night and after the prayers.

Verse 50:41

وَاسْتَمِعْ یَوْمَ یُنَادِ الْمُنَادِ مِنْ مَّكَانٍ قَرِیْبٍ ۟ۙ

Wastamiʻ Yawma yunaadil Munaadi mim makaaniñ q̣areeb,―

And listen! On the Day the caller will call out from a near place,

Verse 50:42

یَّوْمَ یَسْمَعُوْنَ الصَّیْحَةَ بِالْحَقِّ ؕ ذٰلِكَ یَوْمُ الْخُرُوْجِ ۟

Yawma yasmaʻoonaṣ Ṣay-ḥata bilḥaq̣q̣: ẓaalika Yawmul Khurooj.

the Day all will hear the ˹mighty˺ Blast in ˹all˺ truth, that will be the Day of emergence ˹from the graves˺.

Verse 50:43

اِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْیٖ وَنُمِیْتُ وَاِلَیْنَا الْمَصِیْرُ ۟ۙ

ʹInnaa Naḥnu nuḥyee wa-numeetu wa-ʹilaynal Maṣeer!

It is certainly We Who give life and cause death. And to Us is the final return.

Verse 50:44

یَوْمَ تَشَقَّقُ الْاَرْضُ عَنْهُمْ سِرَاعًا ؕ ذٰلِكَ حَشْرٌ عَلَیْنَا یَسِیْرٌ ۟

Yawma tashaq̣q̣aq̣ul ʹarḍu ʻanhum siraaʻaa: ẓaalika ḥashrun ʻalaynaa yaseer.

˹Beware of˺ the Day the earth will split open, letting them rush forth. That will be an easy gathering for Us.

Verse 50:45

نَحْنُ اَعْلَمُ بِمَا یَقُوْلُوْنَ وَمَاۤ اَنْتَ عَلَیْهِمْ بِجَبَّارٍ ۫ فَذَكِّرْ بِالْقُرْاٰنِ مَنْ یَّخَافُ وَعِیْدِ ۟۠

Naḥnu ʹaʻlamu bimaa yaq̣ooloona wa-maaa ʹañta ʻalayhim̃ bijabbaar. Faẓakkir bil-Q̣urʹaani mañy yakhaafu Waʻeed!

We know best what they say. And you ˹O Prophet˺ are not ˹there˺ to compel them ˹to believe˺. So remind with the Quran ˹only˺ those who fear My warning.
