Surah Al-Alaq
Surah Al-Alaq (The Clot) is Surah 96 of the Holy Quran, a Meccan Surah with 19 verses, available here in English.
Verse 96:1
اِقْرَاْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِیْ خَلَقَ ۟ۚ
ʹIq̣raʹ bismi Rab-bikal laẓee khalaq̣,
Read, ˹O Prophet,˺ in the Name of your Lord Who created—
Verse 96:2
خَلَقَ الْاِنْسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ ۟ۚ
Khalaq̣al ʹiñsaana min ʻalaq̣.
created humans from a clinging clot.
Verse 96:3
اِقْرَاْ وَرَبُّكَ الْاَكْرَمُ ۟ۙ
ʹIq̣raʹ wa-Rabbukal ʹAkram,―
Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous,
Verse 96:4
الَّذِیْ عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ ۟ۙ
ʹAllaẓee ʻallama bil-Q̣alam,―
Who taught by the pen—
Verse 96:5
عَلَّمَ الْاِنْسَانَ مَا لَمْ یَعْلَمْ ۟ؕ
ʻAl-lamal ʹiñsaana maa- lam yaʻlam.
taught humanity what they knew not.
Verse 96:6
كَلَّاۤ اِنَّ الْاِنْسَانَ لَیَطْغٰۤی ۟ۙ
Kallaaa ʹinnal ʹiñsaana layaṭg̣aa,
Most certainly, one exceeds all bounds
Verse 96:7
اَنْ رَّاٰهُ اسْتَغْنٰی ۟ؕ
ʹArra ʹaahus tag̣naa.
once they think they are self-sufficient.
Verse 96:8
اِنَّ اِلٰی رَبِّكَ الرُّجْعٰی ۟ؕ
ʹInna ʹilaa Rabbikar rujʻaa.
˹But˺ surely to your Lord is the return ˹of all˺.
Verse 96:9
اَرَءَیْتَ الَّذِیْ یَنْهٰی ۟ۙ
ʹA-raʹaytal laẓee yanhaa
Have you seen the man who prevents
Verse 96:10
عَبْدًا اِذَا صَلّٰی ۟ؕ
ʻAbdan ʹiẓaa ṣallaa?
a servant ˹of Ours˺ from praying?
Verse 96:11
اَرَءَیْتَ اِنْ كَانَ عَلَی الْهُدٰۤی ۟ۙ
ʹA-raʹayta ʹiñ kaana ʻalal Hudaa?
What if this ˹servant˺ is ˹rightly˺ guided,
Verse 96:12
اَوْ اَمَرَ بِالتَّقْوٰی ۟ؕ
ʹAw ʹamara bit-Taq̣waa?
or encourages righteousness?
Verse 96:13
اَرَءَیْتَ اِنْ كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلّٰی ۟ؕ
ʹA-raʹayta ʹiñ kaẓ-ẓaba wa-tawallaa?
What if that ˹man˺ persists in denial and turns away?
Verse 96:14
اَلَمْ یَعْلَمْ بِاَنَّ اللّٰهَ یَرٰی ۟ؕ
ʹAlam yaʻlam̃ biʹannal laaha yaraa?
Does he not know that Allah sees ˹all˺?
Verse 96:15
كَلَّا لَىِٕنْ لَّمْ یَنْتَهِ ۙ۬ لَنَسْفَعًا بِالنَّاصِیَةِ ۟ۙ
Kallaa laʹil lam yañtahi lanasfaʻam bin-naaṣiyah,―
But no! If he does not desist, We will certainly drag him by the forelock—
Verse 96:16
نَاصِیَةٍ كَاذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ ۟ۚ
Naaṣiyatiñ kaaẓibatin khaaṭiʹah!
a lying, sinful forelock.
Verse 96:17
فَلْیَدْعُ نَادِیَهٗ ۟ۙ
Fal-yadʻu naadiyah:
So let him call his associates.
Verse 96:18
سَنَدْعُ الزَّبَانِیَةَ ۟ۙ
Sanadʻuz zabaaniyah!
We will call the wardens of Hell.
Verse 96:19
كَلَّا ؕ لَا تُطِعْهُ وَاسْجُدْ وَاقْتَرِبْ ۟
Kallaa: laa- tuṭiʻhu wasjud waq̣tarib!
Again, no! Never obey him ˹O Prophet˺! Rather, ˹continue to˺ prostrate and draw near ˹to Allah˺.
