Translation by Sahih International

  1. Surah Az-ZumarBegins here at 39:32

  2. 39:32

Faman ʹaz̤̣lamu mimmañ kaẓaba ʻalal laahi wa-kaẓẓaba biṣ-Ṣidq̣i ʹiẓ jaaaʹah? ʹAlaysa fee Jahannama mas̤wal lilkaafireen?

So who is more unjust than one who lies about Allāh and denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a residence for the disbelievers?

  3. 39:33

Wallaẓee jaaaʹa biṣ-Ṣidq̣i wa-ṣaddaq̣a biheee ʹulaaaʹika humul Muttaq̣oon.

And the one who has brought the truth [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)] and [they who] believed in it - those are the righteous.

  4. 39:34

Lahum maa yashaaaʹoona ʻiñda Rabbihim: ẓaalika jazaaaʹul Muḥsineen,

They will have whatever they desire with their Lord. That is the reward of the doers of good -

  5. 39:35

Liyukaffiral laahu ʻanhum ʹaswa ʹallaẓee ʻamiloo wa-yajziyahum ʹajrahum̃ biʹaḥsanil laẓee kaanoo yaʻmaloon.

That Allāh may remove from them the worst of what they did and reward them their due for the best of what they used to do.

  6. 39:36

ʹAlaysal laahu bi-Kaafin ʻabdah? Wa-yukhawwi-foonaka billaẓeena miñ doonih! Wa-mañy yuḍlilil laahu famaa lahoo min haad.

Is not Allāh sufficient for His Servant [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)]? And [yet], they threaten you with those [they worship] other than Him. And whoever Allāh leaves astray - for him there is no guide.

  7. 39:37

Wa-mañy yahdil laahu famaa lahoo mim muḍill. ʹAlaysal laahu biʻAzeeziñ Ẓiñ tiq̣aam?

And whoever Allāh guides - for him there is no misleader. Is not Allāh Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution?

  8. 39:38

Wa-laʹiñ saʹaltahum man khalaq̣as samaawaati wal-ʹarḍa layaq̣oolunnal laah. Q̣ul ʹafaraʹaytum maa tadʻoona miñ doonil laahi ʹin ʹaraadaniyal laahu biḍurrin hal hunna kaashifaatu ḍurriheee ʹaw ʹaraadanee bi-Raḥmatin hal hunna mumsikaatu Raḥmatih? Q̣ul ḥasbiyal laah! ʻAlayhi yatawakkalul Mutawakkiloon.

And if you asked them, "Who created the heavens and the earth?" they would surely say, "Allāh." Say, "Then have you considered what you invoke besides Allāh? If Allāh intended me harm, are they removers of His harm; or if He intended me mercy, are they withholders of His mercy?" Say, "Sufficient for me is Allāh; upon Him [alone] rely the [wise] reliers."

  9. 39:39

Q̣ul yaa q̣awmiʻmaloo ʻalaa makaanatikum ʹinnee ʻaamil: fasawfa taʻlamoon.

Say, "O my people, work according to your position, [for] indeed, I am working; and you are going to know

  10. 39:40

Mañy yaʹteehi ʻaẓaabuñy yukhzeehi wa-yaḥillu ʻalayhi ʻaẓaabum muq̣eem.

To whom will come a torment disgracing him and on whom will descend an enduring punishment."

  11. 39:41

ʹInnaaa ʹañzalnaa ʻalaykal Kitaaba linnaasi bil-Ḥaq̣q̣. famanih tadaa falinafsih: wa-mañ ḍalla faʹinnamaa yaḍillu ʻalayhaa. Wa-maaa ʹañta ʻalayhim̃ biwakeel.

Indeed, We sent down to you the Book for the people in truth. So whoever is guided - it is for [the benefit of] his soul; and whoever goes astray only goes astray to its detriment. And you are not a manager [i.e., authority] over them.

  12. 39:42

ʹAllaahu yatawaffal ʹañfusa ḥeena mawtihaa wallatee lam tamut fee manaamihaa: fayumsikul latee q̣aḍaa ʻalayhal mawta wa-yursilul ʹukhraaa ʹilaaa ʹajalim musammaa. ʹInna fee ẓaalika laʹAayaatil liq̣awmiñy yatafakkaroon.

Allāh takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.

  13. 39:43

ʹAmit takhaẓoo miñ doonil laahi shufaʻaaaʹ? Q̣ul ʹawalaw kaanoo laa- yamlikoona shayʹañw walaa yaʻq̣iloon?

Or have they taken other than Allāh as intercessors? Say, "Even though they do not possess [power over] anything, nor do they reason?"

  14. 39:44

Q̣ul lillaahish Shafaaʻatu jameeʻaa: lahoo mulkus samaawaati wal-ʹarḍ: s̤umma ʹilayhi turjaʻoon.

Say, "To Allāh belongs [the right to allow] intercession entirely. To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Then to Him you will be returned."

  15. 39:45

Wa-ʹiẓaa ẓukiral laahu Waḥdahush maʹazzat q̣uloobul laẓeena laa- yuʹminoona bil-ʹAakhirah; wa-ʹiẓaa ẓukiral laẓeena miñ dooniheee ʹiẓaa hum yastabshiroon!

And when Allāh is mentioned alone, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter shrink with aversion, but when those [worshipped] other than Him are mentioned, immediately they rejoice.

  16. 39:46

Q̣ulil laahumma Faaṭiras samaawaati wal-ʹarḍi ʻAalimal g̣aybi washshahaadati ʹAñta taḥkumu bayna ʻibaadika Fee maa- kaanoo feehi yakhtalifoon.

Say, "O Allāh, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, You will judge between your servants concerning that over which they used to differ."

  17. 39:47

Wa-law ʹanna lillaẓeena z̤̣alamoo maa- fil ʹarḍi jameeʻañw wamis̤lahoo maʻahoo laftadaw bihee miñ soooʹil ʻaẓaabi Yawmal Q̣iyaamah: wa-badaa lahum minal laahi maa- lam yakoonoo yaḥtasiboon!

And if those who did wrong had all that is in the earth entirely and the like of it with it, they would [attempt to] ransom themselves thereby from the worst of the punishment on the Day of Resurrection. And there will appear to them from Allāh that which they had not taken into account.

  18. 39:48

Wa-badaa lahum sayyiʹaatu maa- kasaboo waḥaaq̣a bihim maa kaanoo bihee yastahziʹoon!

And there will appear to them the evils they had earned, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule.

  19. 39:49

Faʹiẓaa massal ʹiñsaana ḍurruñ daʻaanaa: s̤umma ʹiẓaa khawwalnaahu niʻmatam minnaa q̣aala ʹinnamaaa ʹooteetuhoo ʻalaa ʻilm! Bal hiya fitnatuñw walaakinna ʹaks̤arahum laa- yaʻlamoon!

And when adversity touches man, he calls upon Us; then when We bestow on him a favor from Us, he says, "I have only been given it because of [my] knowledge." Rather, it is a trial, but most of them do not know.

  20. 39:50

Q̣ad q̣aalahal laẓeena miñ q̣ablihim famaaa ʹag̣naa ʻanhum maa kaanoo yaksiboon.

Those before them had already said it, but they were not availed by what they used to earn.

  21. 39:51

Faʹaṣaabahum sayyiʹaatu maa- kasaboo. Wallaẓeena z̤̣alamoo min haaaʹulaaaʹi sayuṣeebuhum sayyiʹaatu maa- kasaboo wa-maa hum̃ bimuʻjizeen!

And the evil consequences of what they earned struck them. And those who have wronged of these [people] will be struck [i.e., afflicted] by the evil consequences of what they earned; and they will not cause failure.

  22. 39:52

ʹAwalam yaʻlamooo ʹannal laaha yabsuṭur rizq̣a limañy yashaaaʹu wa-yaq̣dir? ʹInna fee ẓaalika laʹAayaatil liq̣awmiñy yuʹminoon!

Do they not know that Allāh extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]? Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.

  23. 39:53

Q̣ul yaaʻIbaadiyal laẓeena ʹasrafoo ʻalaaa ʹañfusihim laa- taq̣naṭoo mir Raḥmatil laah: ʹinnal laaha yag̣firuẓ ẓunooba jameeʻaa. ʹInnahoo Huwal G̣afoorur Raḥeem.

Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

  24. 39:54

Wa-ʹaneebooo ʹilaa Rabbikum wa-ʹaslimoo lahoo miñ q̣abli ʹañy yaʹtiyakumul ʻAẓaabu s̤umma laa- tuñṣaroon.

And return [in repentance] to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes upon you; then you will not be helped.

  25. 39:55

Wattabiʻooo ʹaḥsana maaa ʹuñzila ʹilaykum mir Rabbikum miñ q̣abli ʹañy yaʹtiyakumul ʻaẓaabu bag̣tatañw waʹañtum laa- tashʻuroon!―

And follow the best of what was revealed to you from your Lord [i.e., the Qur’ān] before the punishment comes upon you suddenly while you do not perceive,

  26. 39:56

ʹAñ taq̣oola nafsuñy yaaḥasrataa ʻalaa maa- farraṭtu fee jambil laahi wa-ʹiñ kuñtu laminas saakhireen!

Lest a soul should say, "Oh, [how great is] my regret over what I neglected in regard to Allāh and that I was among the mockers."

  27. 39:57

ʹAw taq̣oola law ʹannal laaha hadaanee lakuñtu minal Muttaq̣een!

Or [lest] it say, "If only Allāh had guided me, I would have been among the righteous."

  28. 39:58

ʹAw taq̣oola ḥeena taral ʻaẓaaba law ʹanna lee karratañ faʹakoona minal Muḥsineen!

Or [lest] it say when it sees the punishment, "If only I had another turn so I could be among the doers of good."

  29. 39:59

Balaa q̣ad jaaaʹatka ʹAayaatee fakaẓẓabta bihaa wastakbarta wa-kuñta minal kaafireen.

But yes, there had come to you My verses, but you denied them and were arrogant, and you were among the disbelievers.

  30. 39:60

Wa-Yawmal Q̣iyaamati taral laẓeena kaẓaboo ʻalal laahi wujoohuhum muswaddah: ʹalaysa fee Jahannama mas̤wal lilmutakabbireen?

And on the Day of Resurrection you will see those who lied about Allāh [with] their faces blackened. Is there not in Hell a residence for the arrogant?

  31. 39:61

Wa-yunajjil laahul laẓeenat taq̣aw Bimafaazatihim laa- yamassuhumus soooʹu wa-laa hum yaḥzanoon.

And Allāh will save those who feared Him by their attainment; no evil will touch them, nor will they grieve.

  32. 39:62

ʹAllaahu khaaliq̣u kulli shayʹ: wa-Huwa ʻalaa kulli shayʹiñw Wakeel.

Allāh is the Creator of all things, and He is, over all things, Disposer of affairs.

  33. 39:63

Lahoo maq̣aaleedus samaawaati wal-ʹarḍ: wallaẓeena kafaroo biʹAayaatil laahi ʹulaaaʹika humul khaasiroon.

To Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth. And they who disbelieve in the verses of Allāh - it is those who are the losers.

  34. 39:64

Q̣ul ʹafag̣ayral laahi taʹmurooonneee ʹaʻbudu ʹayyuhal jaahiloon?

Say, [O Muḥammad], "Is it other than Allāh that you order me to worship, O ignorant ones?"

  35. 39:65

Wa-laq̣ad ʹooḥiya ʹilayka wa-ʹilal laẓeena miñ q̣ablik: laʹin ʹashrakta layaḥbaṭanna ʻamaluka wa-latakoonanna minal khaasireen.

And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allāh, your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers.

  36. 39:66

Balil laaha faʻbud wa-kum minash shaakireen.

Rather, worship [only] Allāh and be among the grateful.

  37. 39:67

    Wa-maa q̣adarul laaha ḥaq̣q̣a q̣adrihee wal-ʹarḍu jameeʻañ q̣abḍatuhoo Yawmal Q̣iyaamati wassamaawaatu maṭwiyyaatum biyameenih: Subḥaanahoo wa-Taʻaalaa ʻammaa yushrikoon!

They have not appraised Allāh with true appraisal, while the earth entirely will be [within] His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand. Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him.

  38. 39:68

Wa-nufikha fiṣ Ṣoori faṣaʻiq̣a mañ fis samaawaati wa-mañ fil ʹarḍi ʹillaa mañ shaaaʹal laah. S̤umma nufikha feehi ʹukhraa faʹiẓaa hum q̣iyaamuñy yañz̤̣uroon!

And the Horn will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead except whom Allāh wills. Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on.

  39. 39:69

    Wa-ʹashraq̣atil ʹarḍu binoori Rabbihaa wa-wuḍiʻal Kitaabu wa-jeeeʹa bin-nabiyyeena washshuhadaaaʹi wa-q̣uḍiya baynahum̃ bilḥaq̣q̣i wa-hum laa- yuz̤̣lamoon.

And the earth will shine with the light of its Lord, and the record [of deeds] will be placed, and the prophets and the witnesses will be brought, and it will be judged between them in truth, and they will not be wronged.

  40. 39:70

Wa-wuffiyat kullu nafsim maa ʻamilat wa-Huwa ʹaʻlamu bimaa yafʻaloon.

And every soul will be fully compensated [for] what it did; and He is most knowing of what they do.

  41. 39:71

Wa-seeq̣al laẓeena kafarooo ʹilaa Jahannama zumaraa: Ḥattaaa ʹiẓaa jaaaʹoohaa futiḥat ʹabwaabuhaa wa-q̣aala lahum khazanatuhaaa ʹalam yaʹtikum rusulum miñkum yatloona ʻalaykum ʹAayaati Rabbikum wa-yuñẓiroonakum Liq̣aaaʹa Yawmikum haaẓaa? Q̣aaloo balaa wa-laakin ḥaq̣q̣at Kalimatul ʻAẓaabi ʻalal kaafireen!

And those who disbelieved will be driven to Hell in groups until, when they reach it, its gates are opened and its keepers will say, "Did there not come to you messengers from yourselves, reciting to you the verses of your Lord and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?" They will say, "Yes, but the word [i.e., decree] of punishment has come into effect upon the disbelievers."

  42. 39:72

Q̣eelad khulooo ʹabwaaba Jahannama khaalideena feehaa: fabiʹsa mas̤wal mutakabbireen!

[To them] it will be said, "Enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and wretched is the residence of the arrogant."

  43. 39:73

Wa-seeq̣al laẓeenat taq̣aw Rabbahum ʹilal Jannati zumaraa: ḥattaaa ʹiẓaa jaaaʹooha wa-futiḥat ʹabwaabuhaa wa-q̣aala lahum khazanatuhaa ʻʻSalaamun ʻalaykum ṭibtum fadkhuloohaa khaalideen.ʹʹ

But those who feared their Lord will be driven to Paradise in groups until, when they reach it while its gates have been opened and its keepers say, "Peace be upon you; you have become pure; so enter it to abide eternally therein," [they will enter].

  44. 39:74

Wa-q̣aalul Ḥamdulillaahil laẓee ṣadaq̣anaa Waʻdahoo wa-ʹawras̤anal ʹarḍa natabaw waʹu minal Jannati ḥays̤u Nashaaaʹ: Faniʻma ʹajrul ʻaamileen!

And they will say, "Praise to Allāh, who has fulfilled for us His promise and made us inherit the earth [so] we may settle in Paradise wherever we will. And excellent is the reward of [righteous] workers."

  45. 39:75

Wa-taral malaaaʹikata ḥaaaffeena Min ḥawlil ʻArshi yusabbiḥoona bi-Ḥamdi Rabbihim. Wa-q̣uḍiya baynahum̃ bilḥaq̣q̣i wa-q̣eelal Ḥamdu lillaahi Rabbil ʻAalameen!

And you will see the angels surrounding the Throne, exalting [Allāh] with praise of their Lord. And it will be judged between them in truth, and it will be said, "[All] praise to Allāh, Lord of the worlds."

  46. Surah GhafirBegins here at 40:1

  47. 40:1

    Ḥaa-Meeem.

    Ḥā, Meem.

  48. 40:2

Tañzeelul Kitaabi minal laahil ʻAzeezil ʻAleem,―

The revelation of the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] is from Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing,

  49. 40:3

G̣aafiriẓ Ẓambi wa-Q̣aabilit Tawbi Shadeedil ʻIq̣aabi Ẓiṭ Ṭawl. Laaa ʹilaaha ʹillaa Hoo: ʹilayhil Maṣeer.

The forgiver of sin, acceptor of repentance, severe in punishment, owner of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the destination.

  50. 40:4

Maa- yujaadilu feee ʹAayaatil laahi ʹillal laẓeena kafaroo falaa yag̣rurka taq̣allubuhum fil bilaad!

No one disputes concerning the signs of Allāh except those who disbelieve, so be not deceived by their [uninhibited] movement throughout the land.

  51. 40:5

Kaẓẓabat q̣ablahum Q̣awmu Nooḥiñw wal-ʹAḥzaabu mim baʻdihim; wa-hammat kullu ʹummatim birasoolihim liyaʹkhuẓoohu wa-jaadaloo bilbaaṭili liyudḥiḍoo bihil Ḥaq̣q̣a faʹakhaẓtuhum! Fakayfa kaana ʻIq̣aab!

The people of Noah denied before them and the [disbelieving] factions after them, and every nation intended [a plot] for their messenger to seize him, and they disputed by [using] falsehood to [attempt to] invalidate thereby the truth. So I seized them, and how [terrible] was My penalty.

  52. 40:6

Wa-kaẓaalika ḥaq̣q̣at Kalimatu Rabbika ʻalal laẓeena kafarooo ʹannahum ʹAṣḥaabun Naar!

And thus has the word [i.e., decree] of your Lord come into effect upon those who disbelieved that they are companions of the Fire.

  53. 40:7

ʹAllaẓeena yaḥmiloonal ʻArsha wa-man ḥawlahoo yusabbiḥoona bi-Ḥamdi Rabbihim wa-yuʹminoona bihee wa-yastag̣firoona lillaẓeena ʹaamanoo: Rabbanaa wasiʻta kulla shayʹir Raḥmatañw wa-ʻilmañ fag̣fir lillaẓeena taaboo wattabaʻoo Sabeelaka waq̣ihim ʻAẓaabal Jaḥeem!

Those [angels] who carry the Throne and those around it exalt [Allāh] with praise of their Lord and believe in Him and ask forgiveness for those who have believed, [saying], "Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your way and protect them from the punishment of Hellfire.

  54. 40:8

Rabbanaa wa-ʹadkhilhum Jannaati ʻAdninil latee waʻattahum wa-mañ ṣalaḥa min ʹaabaaaʹihim wa-ʹazwaajihim wa-ẓurriyyaatihim! ʹInnaka ʹAñtal ʻAzeezul Ḥakeem.

Our Lord, and admit them to gardens of perpetual residence which You have promised them and whoever was righteous among their forefathers, their spouses and their offspring. Indeed, it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

  55. 40:9

    Waq̣ihimus sayyiʹaat; wa-mañ taq̣is sayyiʹaati Yawmaʹiẓiñ faq̣ad raḥimtah: wa-zaalika huwal Fawzul ʻaz̤̣eem.

And protect them from the evil consequences [of their deeds]. And he whom You protect from evil consequences that Day - You will have given him mercy. And that is the great attainment."

  56. 40:10

ʹInnal laẓeena kafaroo yunaadawna lamaq̣tul laahi ʹakbaru mim maq̣tikum ʹañfusakum ʹiẓ tudʻawna ʹilal ʹeemaani fatakfuroon.

Indeed, those who disbelieve will be addressed, "The hatred of Allāh for you was [even] greater than your hatred of yourselves [this Day in Hell] when you were invited to faith, but you disbelieved [i.e., refused]."

  57. 40:11

Q̣aaloo Rabbanaaa ʹamat tanas̤natayni wa-ʹaḥyaytanas̤ natayni faʻtarafnaa biẓunoobinaa fahal ʹilaa khuroojim miñ sabeel?

They will say, "Our Lord, You made us lifeless twice and gave us life twice, and we have confessed our sins. So is there to an exit any way?"

  58. 40:12

Ẓaalikum̃ biʹannahooo ʹiẓaa duʻiyal laahu waḥdahoo kafartum, wa-ʹiñy yushrak bihee tuʹminoo! Fal-Ḥukmu lillaahil ʻAliyyil Kabeer!

[They will be told], "That is because, when Allāh was called upon alone, you disbelieved; but if others were associated with Him, you believed. So the judgement is with Allāh, the Most High, the Grand."

  59. 40:13

Huwal laẓee yureekum ʹAayaatihee wa-yunazzilu lakum minas samaaaʹi Rizq̣aa: wa-maa yataẓakkaru ʹillaa mañy yuneeb.

It is He who shows you His signs and sends down to you from the sky, provision. But none will remember except he who turns back [in repentance].

  60. 40:14

Fadʻul laaha mukhliṣeena lahud deena wa-law karihal kaafiroon.

So invoke Allāh, [being] sincere to Him in religion, although the disbelievers dislike it.

  61. 40:15

Rafeeʻud darajaati Ẓul ʻArsh: yulq̣ir rooḥa min ʹAmrihee ʻalaa mañy yashaaaʹu min ʻibaadihee liyuñẓira Yawmat Talaaq̣,―

[He is] the Exalted above [all] degrees, Owner of the Throne; He places the inspiration of His command [i.e., revelation] upon whom He wills of His servants to warn of the Day of Meeting.

  62. 40:16

Yawma hum̃ baarizoon: laa- yakhfaa ʻalal laahi minhum shayʹ. Limanil Mulkul Yawm? Lillaahil Waaḥidil Q̣ahhaar!

The Day they come forth nothing concerning them will be concealed from Allāh. To whom belongs [all] sovereignty this Day? To Allāh, the One, the Prevailing.

  63. 40:17

ʹAl-Yawma tujzaa kullu nafsim bimaa Kasabat laa z̤̣ulmal Yawm. ʹInnal laaha Sareeʻul Ḥisaab.

This Day every soul will be recompensed for what it earned. No injustice today! Indeed, Allāh is swift in account.

  64. 40:18

Wa-ʹañẓirhum Yawmal ʹAazifati ʹiẓil q̣uloobu ladal ḥanaajiri kaaz̤̣imeen; maa- liz̤̣z̤̣aalimeena min ḥameemiñw walaa shafeeʻiñy yuṭaaʻ.

And warn them, [O Muḥammad], of the Approaching Day, when hearts are at the throats, filled [with distress]. For the wrongdoers there will be no devoted friend and no intercessor [who is] obeyed.

  65. 40:19

Yaʻlamu khaaaʹinatal ʹaʻyuni wa-maa tukhfiṣ ṣudoor.

He knows that which deceives the eyes and what the breasts conceal.

  66. 40:20

Wallaahu yaq̣ḍee bil-Ḥaq̣q̣: wallaẓeena yadʻoona miñ doonihee laa- yaq̣ḍoona bishayʹ ʹInnal laaha Huwas Sameeʻul Baṣeer.

And Allāh judges with truth, while those they invoke besides Him judge not with anything. Indeed, Allāh - He is the Hearing, the Seeing.

  67. 40:21

ʹAwalam yaseeroo fil ʹarḍi fayañz̤̣uroo kayfa kaana ʻAaq̣ibatul laẓeena kaanoo miñ q̣ablihim? Kaanoo hum ʹashadda minhum q̣uwwatañw waʹaas̤aarañ fil ʹarḍi faʹakhaẓahumul laahu biẓunoobihim: wa-maa kaana lahum minal laahi miñw waaq̣.

Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those who were before them? They were greater than them in strength and in impression on the land, but Allāh seized them for their sins. And they had not from Allāh any protector.

  68. 40:22

Ẓaalika biʹannahum kaanat taʹteehim rusuluhum̃ bilbayyinaati fakafaroo faʹakhaẓahumul laah: ʹinnahoo Q̣awiyyuñ Shadeedul ʻiq̣aab.

That was because their messengers were coming to them with clear proofs, but they disbelieved, so Allāh seized them. Indeed, He is Powerful and severe in punishment.

  69. 40:23

Wa-laq̣ad ʹarsalnaa Moosaa biʹAayaatinaa wa-Ṣultaanim mubeen,

And We did certainly send Moses with Our signs and a clear authority

  70. 40:24

    ʹIlaa Firʻawna wa-Haamaana wa-Q̣aaroona faq̣aaloo saaḥiruñ kaẓẓaab!

To Pharaoh, Hāmān and Qārūn, but they said, "[He is] a magician and a liar."

  71. 40:25

Falammaa jaaʹahum̃ bil-Ḥaq̣q̣i min ʻiñdinaa q̣aaluq̣ tulooo ʹabnaaaʹal laẓeena ʹaamanoo maʻahoo wastaḥyoo nisaaaʹahum. Wa-maa kaydul kaafireena ʹillaa fee ḍalaal!...

And when he brought them the truth from Us, they said, "Kill the sons of those who have believed with him and keep their women alive." But the plan of the disbelievers is not except in error.

  72. 40:26

Wa-q̣aala Firʻawnu ẓarooneee ʹaq̣tul Moosaa walyadʻu Rabbah! ʹInneee ʹakhaafu ʹañy yubaddila deenakum ʹaw ʹañy yuz̤̣hira fil ʹarḍil fasaad!

And Pharaoh said, "Let me kill Moses and let him call upon his Lord. Indeed, I fear that he will change your religion or that he will cause corruption in the land."

  73. 40:27

Wa-q̣aala Moosaaa ʹinnee ʻuẓtu bi-Rabbee wa-Rabbikum miñ kulli mutakabbiril laa yuʹminu bi-Yawmil Ḥisaab.

But Moses said, "Indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord from every arrogant one who does not believe in the Day of Account."

  74. 40:28

Wa-q̣aala rajulum Muʹminum min ʹAali Firʻawna yaktumu ʹeemaanahooo ʹataq̣tuloona rajulan ʹañy yaq̣oola Rabbiyal laahu wa-q̣ad jaaaʹakum bil-Bayyinaati mir Rabbikum? Wa-ʹiñy yaku kaaẓibañ faʻalayhi kaẓibuh; wa-ʹiñy yaku ṣaadiq̣añy yuṣibkum̃ baʻḍul laẓee yaʻidukum: ʹinnal laaha laa- yahdee man huwa musrifuñ kaẓẓaab!

And a believing man from the family of Pharaoh who concealed his faith said, "Do you kill a man [merely] because he says, 'My Lord is Allāh' while he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord? And if he should be lying, then upon him is [the consequence of] his lie; but if he should be truthful, there will strike you some of what he promises you. Indeed, Allāh does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar.

  75. 40:29

Yaa-Q̣awmi lakumul mulkul yawma z̤̣aahireena fil ʹarḍ: famañy yañṣurunaa mim baʹsil laahi ʹiñ jaaaʹanaa? Q̣aala Firʻawnu maaa ʹureekum ʹillaa maaa ʹaraa wa-maaa ʹahdeekum ʹillaa Sabeelar Rashaad!

O my people, sovereignty is yours today, [your being] dominant in the land. But who would protect us from the punishment of Allāh if it came to us?" Pharaoh said, "I do not show you except what I see, and I do not guide you except to the way of right conduct."

  76. 40:30

    وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِىٓ ءَامَنَ يَـٰقَوْمِ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُم مِّثْلَ يَوْمِ ٱلْأَحْزَابِ

    Wa-q̣aalal laẓeee ʹaamana yaa-Q̣awmi ʹinneee ʹakhaafu ʻalaykum mis̤la Yawmil ʹAḥzaab;

And he who believed said, "O my people, indeed I fear for you [a fate] like the day of the companies -

  77. 40:31

Mis̤la daʹbi Q̣awmi Nooḥiñw WaʻAadiñw Wa-Samooda wallaẓeena mim baʻdihim: wa-mal laahu yureedu z̤̣ulmal lilʻIbaad.

Like the custom of the people of Noah and of ʿAad and Thamūd and those after them. And Allāh wants no injustice for [His] servants.

  78. 40:32

Wa-yaa-Q̣awmi ʹinneee ʹakhaafu ʻalaykum Yawmat Tanaad,―

And O my people, indeed I fear for you the Day of Calling -

  79. 40:33

Yawma tuwalloona mud-bireen: maa- lakum minal laahi min ʻaaṣim: wa-mañy yuḍlilil laahu famaa lahoo min haad.

The Day you will turn your backs fleeing; there is not for you from Allāh any protector. And whoever Allāh sends astray - there is not for him any guide.

  80. 40:34

Wa-laq̣ad jaaaʹakum Yoosufu miñ q̣ablu bil-Bayyinaati famaa ziltum fee shakkim mimmaa jaaaʹakum̃ bih: ḥattaaa ʹiẓaa halaka q̣ultum lañy yab-ʻas̤al laahu mim baʻdihee rasoolaa. Kaẓaalika yuḍillul laahu man huwa musrifum murtaab,―

And Joseph had already come to you before with clear proofs, but you remained in doubt of that which he brought to you, until when he died, you said, 'Never will Allāh send a messenger after him.' Thus does Allāh leave astray he who is a transgressor and skeptic."

  81. 40:35

ʹAllaẓeena yujaadiloona feee ʹAayaatil laahi big̣ayri sulṭaanin ʹataahum. Kabura maq̣tan ʻiñdal laahi wa-ʻiñdal laẓeena ʹaamanoo. Kaẓaalika yaṭbaʻul laahu ʻalaa kulli q̣albi mutakabbiriñ jabbaar.

Those who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh without an authority having come to them - great is hatred [of them] in the sight of Allāh and in the sight of those who have believed. Thus does Allāh seal over every heart [belonging to] an arrogant tyrant.

  82. 40:36

And Pharaoh said, "O Hāmān, construct for me a tower that I might reach the ways -

  83. 40:37

ʹAsbaabas samaawaati faʹaṭṭaliʻa ʹilaaa ʹilaahi Moosaa wa-ʹinnee laʹaz̤̣unnuhoo kaaẓibaa! Wa-kaẓaalika zuyyina li-Firʻawna soooʹu ʻamalihee waṣudda ʻanis Sabeel: wa-maa kaydu Firʻawna ʹillaa fee tabaab.

The ways into the heavens - so that I may look at the deity of Moses; but indeed, I think he is a liar." And thus was made attractive to Pharaoh the evil of his deed, and he was averted from the [right] way. And the plan of Pharaoh was not except in ruin.

  84. 40:38

Wa-q̣aalal laẓeee ʹaamana yaa-Q̣awmit tabiʻooni ʹahdikum Sabeelar Rashaad.

And he who believed said, "O my people, follow me; I will guide you to the way of right conduct.

  85. 40:39

Yaa-Q̣awmi ʹinnamaa haaẓihil ḥayaatud dunyaa mataaʻ; wa-ʹinnal ʹAakhirata hiya Daarul Q̣araar.

O my people, this worldly life is only [temporary] enjoyment, and indeed, the Hereafter - that is the home of [permanent] settlement.

  86. 40:40

Man ʻamila sayyiʹatañ falaa yujzaaa ʹillaa mis̤lahaa: wa-man ʻamila ṣaaliḥam miñ ẓakarin ʹaw ʹuñs̤aa wa-huwa Muʹminuñ faʹulaaaʹika yadkhuloonal Jannata yurzaq̣oona feehaa big̣ayri ḥisaab.

Whoever does an evil deed will not be recompensed except by the like thereof; but whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - those will enter Paradise, being given provision therein without account.

  87. 40:41

Wayaa-Q̣awmi maa- leee ʹadʻookum ʹilan Najaati wa-tadʻoonaneee ʹilan Naar!

And O my people, how is it that I invite you to salvation while you invite me to the Fire?

  88. 40:42

Tadʻoonanee liʹakfura billaahi wa-ʹushrika bihee maa- laysa lee bihee ʻilm: wa-ʹana ʹadʻookum ʹilal ʻAzeezil G̣affaar.

You invite me to disbelieve in Allāh and associate with Him that of which I have no knowledge, and I invite you to the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver.

  89. 40:43

Laa- jarama ʹannamaa tadʻoonaneee ʹilayhi laysa lahoo daʻwatuñ fid dunyaa wa-laa fil ʹAakhirati wa-ʹanna maraddanaaa ʹilal laahi wa-ʹannal musrifeena hum ʹAṣḥaabun Naar!

Assuredly, that to which you invite me has no [response to a] supplication in this world or in the Hereafter; and indeed, our return is to Allāh, and indeed, the transgressors will be companions of the Fire.

  90. 40:44

Fasataẓkuroona maaa ʹaq̣oolu lakum. Wa-ʹufawwiḍu ʹamreee ʹilal laah: ʹinnal laaha Baṣeerum bilʻibaad.

And you will remember what I [now] say to you, and I entrust my affair to Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Seeing of [His] servants."

  91. 40:45

Fawaq̣aahul laahu sayyiʹaati maa- makaroo waḥaaq̣a biʹAali Firʻawna soooʹul ʻAẓaab.

So Allāh protected him from the evils they plotted, and the people of Pharaoh were enveloped by the worst of punishment -

  92. 40:46

ʹAn-Naaru yuʻraḍoona ʻalayhaa g̣uduwwañw waʻashiyyaa: wa-Yawma taq̣oomus Saaʻah: ʹadkhilooo ʹAala Firʻawna ʹashaddal ʻaẓaab!

The Fire; they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment."

  93. 40:47

Wa-ʹiẓ yataḥaaajjoona fin Naari fayaq̣ooluḍ ḍuʻafaaaʹu lillaẓeenas takbarooo ʹinnaa kunnaa lakum tabaʻañ fahal ʹañtum mug̣noona ʻannaa naṣeebam minan Naar?

And [mention] when they will argue within the Fire, and the weak will say to those who had been arrogant, "Indeed, we were [only] your followers, so will you relieve us of a share of the Fire?"

  94. 40:48

Q̣aalal laẓeenas takbarooo ʹinnaa kulluñ feehaaa ʹinnal laaha q̣ad ḥakama baynal ʻibaad!

Those who had been arrogant will say, "Indeed, all [of us] are in it. Indeed, Allāh has judged between the servants."

  95. 40:49

Wa-q̣aalal laẓeena fin Naari likhazanati Jahannamad ʻoo Rabbakum yukhaffif ʻannaa yawmam minal ʻaẓaab!

And those in the Fire will say to the keepers of Hell, "Supplicate your Lord to lighten for us a day from the punishment."

  96. 40:50

Q̣aalooo ʹawalam taku taʹteekum rusulukum̃ bil-Bayyinaat? Q̣aaloo balaa. Q̣aaloo fadʻoo! Wa-maa duʻaaaʹul kaafireena ʹillaa fee ḍalaal!

They will say, "Did there not come to you your messengers with clear proofs?" They will say, "Yes." They will reply, "Then supplicate [yourselves], but the supplication of the disbelievers is not except in error [i.e., futility]."

  97. 40:51

ʹInnaa lanañṣuru rusulanaa wallaẓeena ʹaamanoo fil ḥayaatid dunyaa wa-Yawma yaq̣oomul ʹAshhaad,―

Indeed, We will support Our messengers and those who believe during the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will stand -

  98. 40:52

Yawma laa- yañfaʻuz̤̣z̤̣ aalimeena maʻẓiratuhum wa-lahumul Laʻnatu wa-lahum Soooʹud Daar.

The Day their excuse will not benefit the wrongdoers, and they will have the curse, and they will have the worst home [i.e., Hell].

  99. 40:53

Wa-laq̣ad ʹaataynaa Moosal Hudaa wa-ʹawras̤naa Baneee ʹIsraaaʹeelal Kitaab―

And We had certainly given Moses guidance, and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit the Scripture

  100. 40:54

    Hudañw Wa-Ẓikraa liʹulil ʹalbaab.

As guidance and a reminder for those of understanding.

  101. 40:55

    Faṣbir ʹinna Waʻdal laahi ḥaq̣q̣uñw wastag̣fir liẓambika wa-sabbiḥ bi-Ḥamdi Rabbika bilʻashiyyi wal-ʹibkaar.

So be patient, [O Muḥammad]. Indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And ask forgiveness for your sin and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning.

  102. 40:56

ʹInnal laẓeena yujaadiloona feee ʹAayaatil laahi big̣ayri sulṭaanin ʹataahum ʹiñ fee ṣudoorihim ʹillaa kibrum maa hum̃ bibaalig̣eeh: fastaʻiẓ billaah: ʹinnahoo Huwas Sameeʻul Baṣeer.

Indeed, those who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh without [any] evidence having come to them - there is not within their breasts except pride, [the extent of] which they cannot reach. So seek refuge in Allāh. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Seeing.

  103. 40:57

    Lakhalq̣us samaawaati wal-ʹarḍi ʹakbaru min khalq̣in naasi wa-laakinna ʹaks̤aran naasi laa- yaʻlamoon.

The creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most of the people do not know.

  104. 40:58

Wa-maa yastawil ʹaʻmaa walbaṣeer: wallaẓeena ʹaamanoo wa-ʻamiluṣ ṣaaliḥaati wa-lal museeeʹ. Q̣aleelam maa tataẓakkaroon!

And not equal are the blind and the seeing, nor are those who believe and do righteous deeds and the evildoer. Little do you remember.

  105. 40:59

ʹInnas Saaʻata laʹaatiyatul laa rayba feehaa wa-laakinna ʹaks̤aran naasi laa- yuʹminoon.

Indeed, the Hour is coming - no doubt about it - but most of the people do not believe.

  106. 40:60

Wa-q̣aala Rabbukumud ʻooneee ʹastajib lakum. ʹInnal laẓeena yastakbiroona ʻan ʻibaadatee sayadkhuloona Jahannama daakhireen!

And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.

  107. 40:61

ʹAllaahul laẓee jaʻala lakumul layla litaskunoo feehi wannahaara mubṣiraa. ʹInnal laaha la-Ẓoo Faḍlin ʻalan naasi wa-laakinna ʹaks̤aran naasi laa- yashkuroon.

It is Allāh who made for you the night that you may rest therein and the day giving sight. Indeed, Allāh is the possessor of bounty for the people, but most of them are not grateful.

  108. 40:62

Ẓaalikumul laahu Rabbukum khaaliq̣u kulli shayʹ. Laaa ʹilaaha ʹillaa Hoo: Faʹannaa tuʹfakoon!

That is Allāh, your Lord, Creator of all things; there is no deity except Him, so how are you deluded?

  109. 40:63

Kaẓaalika yuʹfakul laẓeena kaanoo biʹAayaatil laahi yajḥadoon.

Thus were those [before you] deluded who were rejecting the signs of Allāh.

  110. 40:64

ʹAllaahul laẓee jaʻala lakumul ʹarḍa q̣araarañw wassamaaaʹa binaaaʹañw waṣawwarakum faʹaḥsana ṣuwarakum wa-razaq̣akum minaṭ ṭayyibaat;― ẓaalikumul laahu Rabbukum. Fatabaarakal laahu Rabbul ʻAalameen!

It is Allāh who made for you the earth a place of settlement and the sky a structure [i.e., ceiling] and formed you and perfected your forms and provided you with good things. That is Allāh, your Lord; then blessed is Allāh, Lord of the worlds.

  111. 40:65

Huwal Ḥayyu Laaa ʹilaaha ʹillaa Huwa fadʻoohu mukhliṣeena lahud deen. ʹAl-Ḥamdu lillaahi Rabbil ʻAalameen!

He is the Ever-Living; there is no deity except Him, so call upon Him, [being] sincere to Him in religion. [All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Lord of the worlds.

  112. 40:66

Q̣ul ʹinnee nuheetu ʹan ʹaʻbudal laẓeena tadʻoona miñ doonil laahi lammaa jaaʹaniyal Bayyinaatu mir Rabbee, wa-ʹumirtu ʹan ʹuslima li-Rabbil ʻAalameen.

Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, I have been forbidden to worship those you call upon besides Allāh once the clear proofs have come to me from my Lord, and I have been commanded to submit to the Lord of the worlds."

  113. 40:67

    Huwal laẓee khalaq̣akum miñ turaabiñ s̤umma min nuṭfatiñ s̤umma min ʻalaq̣atiñ s̤umma yukhrijukum ṭiflañ s̤umma litablug̣ooo ʹashuddakum s̤umma litakoonoo shuyookhaa,― Wa-miñkum mañy yutawaffaa miñ q̣ablu wa-litablug̣ooo ʹajalam musammañw walaʻallakum taʻq̣iloon.

It is He who created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot; then He brings you out as a child; then [He develops you] that you reach your [time of] maturity, then [further] that you become elders. And among you is he who is taken in death before [that], so that you reach a specified term; and perhaps you will use reason.

  114. 40:68

Huwal laẓee yuḥyee wa-yumeet; faʹiẓaa q̣aḍaaa ʹamañ faʹinnamaa yaq̣oolu lahoo ʻʻKUÑʹʹ fayakoon.

He it is who gives life and causes death; and when He decrees a matter, He but says to it, "Be," and it is.

  115. 40:69

ʹAlam tara ʹilal laẓeena yujaadiloona feee ʹAayaatil laah? ʹAnnaa yuṣrafoon?

Do you not consider those who dispute concerning the signs of Allāh - how are they averted?

  116. 40:70

ʹAllaẓeena kaẓẓaboo bil-Kitaabi wa-bimaaa ʹarsalnaa bihee rusulanaa fasawfa yaʻlamoon,

Those who deny the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] and that with which We sent Our messengers - they are going to know,

  117. 40:71

ʹIẓil ʹag̣laalu feee ʹaʻnaaq̣ihim wassalaasilu yusḥaboon.

When the shackles are around their necks and the chains; they will be dragged

  118. 40:72

Fil ḥameemi, s̤umma fin Naari yusjaroon.

In boiling water; then in the Fire they will be filled [with flame].

  119. 40:73

S̤umma q̣eela lahum ʹayna maa- kuñtum tushrikoon

Then it will be said to them, "Where is that which you used to associate [with Him in worship]

  120. 40:74

Miñ doonil laah? Q̣aaloo ḍalloo ʻannaa bal lam nakun nadʻoo miñ q̣ablu shayʹaa. Kaẓaalika yuḍillul laahul kaafireen.

Other than Allāh?" They will say, "They have departed from us; rather, we did not used to invoke previously anything." Thus does Allāh put astray the disbelievers.

  121. 40:75

Ẓaalikum̃ bimaa kuñtum tafraḥoona fil ʹarḍi big̣ayril Ḥaq̣q̣i wa-bimaa kuñtum tamraḥoon.

[The angels will say], "That was because you used to exult upon the earth without right and you used to behave insolently.

  122. 40:76

ʹUdkhulooo ʹabwaaba Jahannama khaalideena feehaa: fabiʹsa mas̤wal mutakabbireen!

Enter the gates of Hell to abide eternally therein, and wretched is the residence of the arrogant."

  123. 40:77

Faṣbir ʹinna Waʹdal laahi Ḥaq̣q̣; faʹimmaa nuriyannaka baʻḍal laẓee naʻiduhum ʹaw natawaffayannaka faʹilaynaa yurjaʹoon.

So be patient, [O Muḥammad]; indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth. And whether We show you some of what We have promised them or We take you in death, it is to Us they will be returned.

  124. 40:78

Wa-laq̣ad ʹarsalnaa rusulam miñ q̣ablika minhum mañ q̣aṣaṣnaa ʻalayka wa-minhum mal lam naq̣ṣuṣ ʻalayk. Wa-maa kaana lirasoolin ʹañy yaʹtiya biʹAayatin ʹillaa biʹiẓnil laah: faʹiẓaa jaaaʹa ʹamrul laahi q̣uḍiya bilḥaq̣q̣i wa-khasira hunaalikal mubṭiloon.

And We have already sent messengers before you. Among them are those [whose stories] We have related to you, and among them are those [whose stories] We have not related to you. And it was not for any messenger to bring a sign [or verse] except by permission of Allāh. So when the command of Allāh comes, it will be concluded [i.e., judged] in truth, and the falsifiers will thereupon lose [all].

  125. 40:79

    ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلْأَنْعَـٰمَ لِتَرْكَبُوا۟ مِنْهَا وَمِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ

    ʹAllaahul laẓee jaʻala lakumul ʹanʻaama litarkaboo minhaa wa-minhaa taʹkuloon;

It is Allāh who made for you the grazing animals upon which you ride, and some of them you eat.

  126. 40:80

Wa-lakum feehaa manaafiʻu wa-litablug̣oo ʻalayhaa ḥaajatañ fee ṣudoorikum wa-ʻalayhaa wa-ʻalal fulki tuḥmaloon.

And for you therein are [other] benefits and that you may realize upon them a need which is in your breasts; and upon them and upon ships you are carried.

  127. 40:81

Wa-yureekum ʹAayaatihee faʹayya ʹAayaatil laahi tuñkiroon.

And He shows you His signs. So which of the signs of Allāh do you deny?

  128. 40:82

ʹAfalam yaseeroo fil ʹarḍi fayañz̤̣uroo kayfa kaana ʻAaq̣ibatul laẓeena miñ q̣ablihim? Kaanooo ʹaks̤ara minhum wa-ʹashadda q̣uwwatañw waʹaas̤aarañ fil ʹarḍi famaaa ʹag̣naa ʻanhum maa kaanoo yaksiboon.

Have they not traveled through the land and observed how was the end of those before them? They were more numerous than themselves and greater in strength and in impression on the land, but they were not availed by what they used to earn.

  129. 40:83

Falammaa jaaaʹathum rusuluhum̃ bil-Bayyinaati fariḥoo bimaa ʻiñdahum minal ʻilmi wa-ḥaaq̣a bihim maa kaanoo bihee yastahziʹoon.

And when their messengers came to them with clear proofs, they [merely] rejoiced in what they had of knowledge, but they were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.

  130. 40:84

Falammaa raʹaw Baʹsanaa q̣aalooo ʹaamannaa billaahi Waḥdahoo wa-kafarnaa bimaa kunnaa bihee mushrikeen.

And when they saw Our punishment, they said, "We believe in Allāh alone and disbelieve in that which we used to associate with Him."

  131. 40:85

Falam yaku yañfaʻuhum ʹeemaanuhum lammaa raʹaw Baʹsanaa. Sunnatal laahil latee q̣ad khalat fee ʻibaadih. Wa-khasira hunaalikal kaafiroon!

But never did their faith benefit them once they saw Our punishment. [It is] the established way of Allāh which has preceded among His servants. And the disbelievers thereupon lost [all].

  132. Surah FussilatBegins here at 41:1

  133. 41:1

    Ḥaa-Meeem:

    Ḥā, Meem.

  134. 41:2

    Tañzeelum minar Raḥmaanir Raḥeem;―

[This is] a revelation from the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful -

  135. 41:3

    كِتَـٰبٌ فُصِّلَتْ ءَايَـٰتُهُۥ قُرْءَانًا عَرَبِيًّا لِّقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ

    Kitaabuñ fuṣṣilat ʹAayaatuhoo Q̣ur-ʹaanan ʻarabiyyal liq̣awmiñy yaʻlamoon;

A Book whose verses have been detailed, an Arabic Qur’ān for a people who know,

  136. 41:4

Basheerañw Wa-Naẓeeraa: faʹaʻraḍa ʹaks̤aruhum fahum laa- yasmaʻoon.

As a giver of good tidings and a warner; but most of them turn away, so they do not hear.

  137. 41:5

And they say, "Our hearts are within coverings [i.e., screened] from that to which you invite us, and in our ears is deafness, and between us and you is a partition, so work; indeed, we are working."

  138. 41:6

Q̣ul ʹinnamaaa ʹana basharum mis̤lukum yooḥaaa ʹilayya ʹannamaaa ʹIlaahukum ʹIlaahuñw Waaḥiduñ fastaq̣eemooo ʹilayhi wastag̣firooh. Wa-waylul lil-Mushrikeen,―

Say, [O Muḥammad], "I am only a man like you to whom it has been revealed that your god is but one God; so take a straight course to Him and seek His forgiveness." And woe to those who associate others with Allāh –

  139. 41:7

ʹAllaẓeena laa- yuʹtoonaz Zakaata wa-hum̃ bil-ʹAakhirati hum kaafiroon.

Those who do not give zakāh, and in the Hereafter they are disbelievers.

  140. 41:8

ʹInnal laẓeena ʹaamanoo wa-ʻamiluṣ ṣaaliḥaati lahum ʹajrun g̣ayru mamnoon.

Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds - for them is a reward uninterrupted.

  141. 41:9

Q̣ul ʹaʹinnakum latakfuroona billaẓee khalaq̣al ʹarḍa fee Yawmayni wa-tajʻaloona lahooo ʹañdaadaa? Ẓaalika Rabbul ʻAalameen.

Say, "Do you indeed disbelieve in He who created the earth in two days and attribute to Him equals? That is the Lord of the worlds."

  142. 41:10

Wa-jaʻala feehaa rawaasiya miñ fawq̣ihaa wa-baaraka feehaa wa-q̣addara feehaaa ʹaq̣waatahaa feee arbaʻati ʹAyyaam; sawaaaʹal lissaaaʹileen.

And He placed on it [i.e., the earth] firmly set mountains over its surface, and He blessed it and determined therein its [creatures'] sustenance in four days without distinction - for [the information of] those who ask.

  143. 41:11

S̤ummas tawaaa ʹilas samaaaʹi wa-hiya dukhaanuñ faq̣aala lahaa wa-lilʹarḍiʹ tiyaa ṭawʻan ʹaw karhaa. Q̣aalataaa ʹataynaa ṭaaʹiʻeen.

Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke and said to it and to the earth, "Come [into being], willingly or by compulsion." They said, "We have come willingly."

  144. 41:12

Faq̣aḍaahunna sabʻa samaawaatiñ fee Yawmayni wa-ʹawḥaa fee kulli samaaaʹin ʹamrahaa. Wa-zayyannassa maaaʹad dunyaa bimaṣaabeeḥa wa-ḥifz̤̣aa. Ẓaalika Taq̣deerul ʻAzeezil ʻAleem.

And He completed them as seven heavens within two days and inspired [i.e., made known] in each heaven its command. And We adorned the nearest heaven with lamps [i.e., stars, for beauty] and as protection. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.

  145. 41:13

    Faʹin ʹaʻraḍoo faq̣ul ʹañẓartukum Ṣaaʻiq̣atam mis̤la Ṣaaʻiq̣ati ʻAadiñw Wa-S̤amood!

But if they turn away, then say, "I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt [that struck] ʿAad and Thamūd.

  146. 41:14

ʹIẓ jaaaʹathumur rusulu mim bayni ʹaydeehim wa-min khalfihim ʹallaa taʻbudooo ʹillal laah. Q̣aaloo law shaaaʹa Rabbunaa laʹañzala malaaaʹikatañ faʹinnaa bimaaa ʹursiltum̃ bihee kaafiroon.

[That occurred] when the messengers had come to them before them and after them, [saying], "Worship not except Allāh." They said, "If our Lord had willed, He would have sent down the angels, so indeed we, in that with which you have been sent, are disbelievers."

  147. 41:15

Faʹammaa ʻAaduñ fastakbaroo fil ʹarḍi big̣ayril ḥaq̣q̣i wa-q̣aaloo man ʹashaddu minnaa q̣uwwah? ʹAwalam yaraw ʹannal laahal laẓee khalaq̣ahum Huwa ʹashaddu minhum q̣uwwah? Wa-kaanoo biʹAayaatinaa yajḥadoon!

As for ʿAad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, "Who is greater than us in strength?" Did they not consider that Allāh who created them was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs.

  148. 41:16

Faʹarsalnaa ʻalayhim Reeḥañ ṣarṣarañ feee ʹAyyaamin naḥisaatil linuẓeeq̣ahum ʻaẓaabal khizyi fil ḥayaatid dunyaa; wa-laʻAẓaabul ʹAakhirati ʹakhzaa Wahum laa- yuñṣaroon.

So We sent upon them a screaming wind during days of misfortune to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the worldly life; but the punishment of the Hereafter is more disgracing, and they will not be helped.

  149. 41:17

Wa-ʹammaa S̤amoodu fahadaynaahum fastaḥabbul ʻamaa ʻalal Hudaa faʹakhaẓathum Ṣaaʻiq̣atul ʻaẓaabil hooni bimaa kaanoo yaksiboon.

And as for Thamūd, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderbolt of humiliating punishment seized them for what they used to earn.

  150. 41:18

    Wa-najjaynal laẓeena ʹaamanoo wa-kaanoo yattaq̣oon.

And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allāh.

  151. 41:19

Wa-Yawma yuḥsharu ʹaʻdaaaʹul laahi ʹilan Naari fahum yoozaʻoon.

And [mention, O Muḥammad], the Day when the enemies of Allāh will be gathered to the Fire while they are [driven], assembled in rows,

  152. 41:20

Ḥattaaa ʹiẓaa maa- jaaaʹoohaa shahida ʻalayhim samʻuhum wa-ʹabṣaaruhum wa-julooduhum̃ bimaa kaanoo yaʻmaloon.

Until, when they reach it, their hearing and their eyes and their skins will testify against them of what they used to do.

  153. 41:21

Wa-q̣aaloo lijuloodihim lima shahittum ʻalaynaa? Q̣aalooo ʹañṭaq̣anal laahul laẓeee ʹañṭaq̣a kulla shayʹiñw wa-Huwa khalaq̣akum ʹawwala marratiñw waʹilayhi turjaʻoon.

And they will say to their skins, "Why have you testified against us?" They will say, "We were made to speak by Allāh, who has made everything speak; and He created you the first time, and to Him you are returned.

  154. 41:22

Wa-maa kuñtum tastatiroona ʹañy yashhada ʻalaykum samʻukum wa-laaa ʹabṣaarukum wa-laa juloodukum wa-laakiñ z̤̣anañtum ʹannal laaha laa- yaʻlamu kas̤eeram mimmaa taʻmaloon!

And you were not covering [i.e., protecting] yourselves, lest your hearing testify against you or your sight or your skins, but you assumed that Allāh does not know much of what you do.

  155. 41:23

    Wa-ẓaalikum z̤̣annukumul laẓee z̤̣anañtum̃ bi-Rabbikum ʹardaakum faʹaṣbaḥtum minal khaasireen.

And that was your assumption which you assumed about your Lord. It has brought you to ruin, and you have become among the losers."

  156. 41:24

Faʹiñy yaṣbiroo fan-naaru mas̤wal lahum! Wa-ʹiñy yastaʻtiboo famaa hum minal muʻtabeen.

So [even] if they are patient, the Fire is a residence for them; and if they ask to appease [Allāh], they will not be of those who are allowed to appease.

  157. 41:25

Wa-q̣ayyaḍnaa lahum q̣uranaaaʹa fazayyanoo lahum maa bayna ʹaydeehim wa-maa khalfahum wa-ḥaq̣q̣a ʻalayhimul q̣awlu feee ʹumamiñ q̣ad khalat miñ q̣ablihim minal Jinni wal-ʹIñs; ʹinnahum kaanoo khaasireen.

And We appointed for them companions who made attractive to them what was before them and what was behind them [of sin], and the word [i.e., decree] has come into effect upon them among nations which had passed on before them of jinn and men. Indeed, they [all] were losers.

  158. 41:26

Wa-q̣aalal laẓeena kafaroo laa- tasmaʻoo lihaaẓal Q̣urʹaani walg̣aw feehi laʻallakum tag̣liboon!

And those who disbelieve say, "Do not listen to this Qur’ān and speak noisily during [the recitation of] it that perhaps you will overcome."

  159. 41:27

But We will surely cause those who disbelieve to taste a severe punishment, and We will surely recompense them for the worst of what they had been doing.

  160. 41:28

Ẓaalika jazaaaʹu ʹaʻdaaaʹil laahin Naar: lahum feehaa Daarul Khuld: jazaaaʹam bimaa kaanoo biʹAayaatinaa yajḥadoon.

That is the recompense of the enemies of Allāh - the Fire. For them therein is the home of eternity as recompense for what they, of Our verses, were rejecting.

  161. 41:29

Wa-q̣aalal laẓeena kafaroo Rabbanaaa ʹarinal laẓeena ʹaḍal-laanaa minal jinni wal-ʹiñsi najʻalhumaa taḥta ʹaq̣daaminaa liyakoonaa minal ʹasfaleen.

And those who disbelieved will [then] say, "Our Lord, show us those who misled us of the jinn and men [so] we may put them under our feet that they will be among the lowest."

  162. 41:30

ʹInnal laẓeena q̣aaloo Rabbunal laahu s̤ummas taq̣aamoo tatanazzalu ʻalayhimul malaaaʹikatu ʹallaa takhaafoo wa-laa taḥzanoo wa-ʹabshiroo bil-Jannatil latee kuñtum tooʻadoon!

Indeed, those who have said, "Our Lord is Allāh" and then remained on a right course - the angels will descend upon them, [saying], "Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised.

  163. 41:31

Naḥnu ʹawliyaaaʹukum fil ḥayaatid dunyaa wa-fil ʹAakhirah: wa-lakum feehaa maa- tashtaheee ʹañfusukum wa-lakum feehaa maa- taddaʻoon!

We [angels] were your allies in worldly life and [are so] in the Hereafter. And you will have therein whatever your souls desire, and you will have therein whatever you request [or wish]

  164. 41:32

    Nuzulam min G̣afoorir Raḥeem.

As accommodation from a [Lord who is] Forgiving and Merciful."

  165. 41:33

Wa-man ʹaḥsanu q̣awlam mimmañ daʻaaa ʹilal laahi wa-ʻamila ṣaaliḥañw waq̣aala ʹinnanee minal Muslimeen?

And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allāh and does righteousness and says, "Indeed, I am of the Muslims."

  166. 41:34

Wa-laa tastawil ḥasanatu wa-las sayyiʹah. ʹIdfaʻ billatee hiya ʹaḥsanu faʹiẓal laẓee baynaka wa-baynahoo ʻadaawatuñ kaʹannahoo wa-liyyun ḥameem!

And not equal are the good deed and the bad. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon, the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend.

  167. 41:35

    Wa-maa yulaq̣q̣aahaaa ʹillal laẓeena wa-maa ṣabaroo yulaq̣q̣aahaaa ʹillaa ẓoo ḥaz̤̣z̤̣in ʻaz̤̣eem.

But none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except one having a great portion [of good].

  168. 41:36

Wa-ʹimmaa yañzag̣annaka minash Shayṭaani nazg̣uñ fastaʻiẓ billaah. ʹInnahoo Huwas Sameeʻul ʻAleem.

And if there comes to you from Satan an evil suggestion, then seek refuge in Allāh. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

  169. 41:37

Wa-min ʹAayaatihil laylu wannahaaru washshamsu walq̣amar. Laa- tasjudoo lishshamsi wa-laa lilq̣amari wasjudoo lillaahil laẓee khalaq̣ahunna ʹiñ kuñtum ʹiyyaahu taʻbudoon.

And of His signs are the night and day and the sun and moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or to the moon, but prostrate to Allāh, who created them, if it should be Him that you worship.

  170. 41:38

Faʹinis takbaroo fallaẓeena ʻiñda Rabbika yusabbiḥoona lahoo billayli wannahaari wahum laa- yasʹamoon.

But if they are arrogant - then those who are near your Lord [i.e., the angels] exalt Him by night and by day, and they do not become weary.

  171. 41:39

Wa-min ʹAayaatiheee ʹannaka taral ʹarḍa khaashiʻatañ faʹiẓaaa ʹañzalnaa ʻalayhal maaaʹah tazzat wa-rabat. ʹInnal laẓeee ʹaḥyaahaa la-Muḥyil mawtaa. ʹInnahoo ʻalaa kulli shayʹiñ Q̣adeer.

And of His signs is that you see the earth stilled, but when We send down upon it rain, it quivers and grows. Indeed, He who has given it life is the Giver of Life to the dead. Indeed, He is over all things competent.

  172. 41:40

ʹInnal laẓeena yulḥidoona feee ʹAayaatinaa laa- yakhfawna ʻalaynaa. ʹAfamañy yulq̣aa fin naari khayrun ʹam mañy yaʹteee ʹaaminañy Yawmal Q̣iyaamah? ʹIʻmaloo maa- shiʹtum ʹinnahoo bimaa taʻmaloona Baṣeer.

Indeed, those who inject deviation into Our verses are not concealed from Us. So, is he who is cast into the Fire better or he who comes secure on the Day of Resurrection? Do whatever you will; indeed, He is Seeing of what you do.

  173. 41:41

ʹInnal laẓeena kafaroo biẓ-Ẓikri lammaa jaaaʹahum. Wa-ʹinnahoo la-Kitaabun ʻAzeez.

Indeed, those who disbelieve in the message [i.e., the Qur’ān] after it has come to them... And indeed, it is a mighty Book.

  174. 41:42

Laa- yaʹteehil baaṭilu mim bayni yadayhi wa-laa min khalfih: Tañzeelum min Ḥakeemin Ḥameed.

Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind it; [it is] a revelation from a [Lord who is] Wise and Praiseworthy.

  175. 41:43

    Maa- yuq̣aalu laka ʹillaa maa- q̣ad q̣eela lir-rusuli miñ q̣ablik: ʹinna Rabbaka la-Ẓoo mag̣firatiñw wa-Ẓoo ʻIq̣aabin ʹaleem.

Nothing is said to you, [O Muḥammad], except what was already said to the messengers before you. Indeed, your Lord is a possessor of forgiveness and a possessor of painful penalty.

  176. 41:44

Wa-law jaʻalnaahu Q̣ur-ʹaanan ʹAʻjamiyyal laq̣aaloo law-laa fuṣṣilat ʹAayaatuh? ʹAʻ-jamiyyuñw WaʻArabiyy? Q̣ul huwa lillaẓeena ʹaamanoo hudañw washifaaaʹ: wallaẓeena laa- yuʹminoona feee ʹaaẓaanihim waq̣ruñw wahuwa ʻalayhim ʻamaa. ʹUlaaaʹika yunaadawna mim makaanim baʻeed!

And if We had made it a foreign [i.e., non-Arabic] Qur’ān, they would have said, "Why are its verses not explained in detail [in our language]? Is it a foreign [recitation] and an Arab [messenger]?" Say, "It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure." And those who do not believe - in their ears is deafness, and it is upon them blindness. Those are being called from a distant place.

  177. 41:45

Wa-laq̣ad ʹaataynaa Moosal Kitaaba fakhtulifa feeh. Wa-lawlaa Kalimatuñ sabaq̣at mir Rabbika laq̣uḍiya baynahum: wa-ʹinnahum lafee shakkim minhu mureeb.

And We had already given Moses the Scripture, but it came under disagreement. And if not for a word [i.e., decree] that preceded from your Lord, it would have been concluded between them. And indeed they are, concerning it [i.e., the Qur’ān], in disquieting doubt.

  178. 41:46

Man ʻamila ṣaaliḥañ falinafsihee wa-man ʹasaaaʹa faʻalayhaa: wa-maa Rabbuka biz̤̣allamil lil-ʻabeed.

Whoever does righteousness - it is for his [own] soul; and whoever does evil [does so] against it. And your Lord is not ever unjust to [His] servants.
