Surah Al-Haqqah
Surah Al-Haqqah (The Reality) is Surah 69 of the Holy Quran, a Meccan Surah with 52 verses, available here in English.
Verse 69:1
اَلْحَآقَّةُ ۟ۙ
ʹALḤAAAQ̣Q̣ATU!
The Inevitable Hour!
Verse 69:2
مَا الْحَآقَّةُ ۟ۚ
Mal Ḥaaaq̣q̣ah?
What is the Inevitable Hour?
Verse 69:3
وَمَاۤ اَدْرٰىكَ مَا الْحَآقَّةُ ۟ؕ
Wa-maaa ʹadraaka mal Ḥaaaq̣q̣ah?
And what will make you realize what the Inevitable Hour is?
Verse 69:4
كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُوْدُ وَعَادٌ بِالْقَارِعَةِ ۟
Kaẓẓabat S̤amoodu wa-ʻAadum bil-Q̣aariʻah!
˹Both˺ Thamûd and ’Ȃd denied the Striking Disaster.
Verse 69:5
فَاَمَّا ثَمُوْدُ فَاُهْلِكُوْا بِالطَّاغِیَةِ ۟
Faʹammaa S̤amoodu faʹuhlikoo biṭ-Ṭaag̣iyah!
As for Thamûd, they were destroyed by an overwhelming blast.
Verse 69:6
وَاَمَّا عَادٌ فَاُهْلِكُوْا بِرِیْحٍ صَرْصَرٍ عَاتِیَةٍ ۟ۙ
Wa-ʹammaa ʻAaduñ faʹuhlikoo bi-Reeḥiñ ṣarṣarin ʻaatiyah;
And as for ’Ȃd, they were destroyed by a furious, bitter wind
Verse 69:7
سَخَّرَهَا عَلَیْهِمْ سَبْعَ لَیَالٍ وَّثَمٰنِیَةَ اَیَّامٍ ۙ حُسُوْمًاۙ فَتَرَی الْقَوْمَ فِیْهَا صَرْعٰی ۙ كَاَنَّهُمْ اَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ خَاوِیَةٍ ۟ۚ
Sakhkharahaa ʻalayhim sabʻa layaaliñw was̤amaaniyata ʹayyaamin ḥusoomañ fataral q̣awma feehaa ṣarʻaa kaʹannahum ʹaʻjaazu nakhlin khaawiyah!
which Allah unleashed on them non-stop for seven nights and eight days, so that you would have seen its people lying dead like trunks of uprooted palm trees.
Verse 69:8
فَهَلْ تَرٰی لَهُمْ مِّنْ بَاقِیَةٍ ۟
Fahal taraa lahum mim baaq̣iyah?
Do you see any of them left alive?
Verse 69:9
وَجَآءَ فِرْعَوْنُ وَمَنْ قَبْلَهٗ وَالْمُؤْتَفِكٰتُ بِالْخَاطِئَةِ ۟ۚ
Wa-jaaaʹa Firʻawnu wa-mañ q̣ablahoo wal-muʹtafikaatu bil-khaaṭiʹah,
Also, Pharaoh and those before him, and ˹the people of˺ the overturned cities ˹of Lot˺ indulged in sin,
Verse 69:10
فَعَصَوْا رَسُوْلَ رَبِّهِمْ فَاَخَذَهُمْ اَخْذَةً رَّابِیَةً ۟
Faʻaṣaw rasoola Rabbihim faʹakhaẓahum ʹakhẓatar raabiyah.
each disobeying their Lord’s messenger, so He seized them with a crushing grip.
Verse 69:11
اِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَا الْمَآءُ حَمَلْنٰكُمْ فِی الْجَارِیَةِ ۟ۙ
ʹInnaa lammaa ṭag̣al maaaʹu ḥamalnaakum fil jaariyah.
Indeed, when the floodwater had overflowed, We carried you in the floating Ark ˹with Noah˺,
Verse 69:12
لِنَجْعَلَهَا لَكُمْ تَذْكِرَةً وَّتَعِیَهَاۤ اُذُنٌ وَّاعِیَةٌ ۟
Linajʻalahaa lakum Taẓkiratañwwa taʻiyahaaa ʹuẓunuñw waaʻiyah.
so that We may make this a reminder to you, and that attentive ears may grasp it.
Verse 69:13
فَاِذَا نُفِخَ فِی الصُّوْرِ نَفْخَةٌ وَّاحِدَةٌ ۟ۙ
Faʹiẓaa nufikha fiṣ Ṣoori nafkhatuñw waaḥidah,
At last, when the Trumpet will be blown with one blast,
Verse 69:14
وَّحُمِلَتِ الْاَرْضُ وَالْجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةً وَّاحِدَةً ۟ۙ
Wa-ḥumilatil ʹarḍu wal-jibaalu fadukkataa dakkatañw waaḥidah,―
and the earth and mountains will be lifted up and crushed with one blow,
Verse 69:15
فَیَوْمَىِٕذٍ وَّقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ ۟ۙ
Fayawmaʹiẓiñw Waq̣aʻatil Waaq̣iʻah,
on that Day the Inevitable Event will have come to pass.
Verse 69:16
وَانْشَقَّتِ السَّمَآءُ فَهِیَ یَوْمَىِٕذٍ وَّاهِیَةٌ ۟ۙ
Wañshaq̣q̣atis samaaaʹu fahiya Yawmaʹiẓiñw waahiyah,
The sky will then be so torn that it will be frail,
Verse 69:17
وَّالْمَلَكُ عَلٰۤی اَرْجَآىِٕهَا ؕ وَیَحْمِلُ عَرْشَ رَبِّكَ فَوْقَهُمْ یَوْمَىِٕذٍ ثَمٰنِیَةٌ ۟ؕ
Wal-malaku ʻalaaa ʹarjaaaʹihaa, wa-yaḥmilu ʻArsha Rabbika fawq̣ahum Yawmaʹiẓiñ s̤amaaniyah.
with the angels on its sides. On that Day eight ˹mighty angels˺ will bear the Throne of your Lord above them.
Verse 69:18
یَوْمَىِٕذٍ تُعْرَضُوْنَ لَا تَخْفٰی مِنْكُمْ خَافِیَةٌ ۟
Yawmaʹiẓiñ tuʻraḍoona laa- takhfaa miñ-kum khaafiyah.
You will then be presented ˹before Him for judgment˺, and none of your secrets will stay hidden.
Verse 69:19
فَاَمَّا مَنْ اُوْتِیَ كِتٰبَهٗ بِیَمِیْنِهٖ ۙ فَیَقُوْلُ هَآؤُمُ اقْرَءُوْا كِتٰبِیَهْ ۟ۚ
Faʹammaa man ʹootiya Kitaabahoo biyameenihee fayaq̣oolu haaaʹumuq̣ raʹoo Kitaabiyah!
As for those given their records in their right hand, they will cry ˹happily˺, “Here ˹everyone˺! Read my record!
Verse 69:20
اِنِّیْ ظَنَنْتُ اَنِّیْ مُلٰقٍ حِسَابِیَهْ ۟ۚ
ʹInnee z̤̣anañtu ʹannee mulaaq̣in Ḥisaabiyah!
I surely knew I would face my reckoning.”
Verse 69:21
فَهُوَ فِیْ عِیْشَةٍ رَّاضِیَةٍ ۟ۙ
Fahuwa fee ʻeeshatir raaḍiyah,
They will be in a life of bliss,
Verse 69:22
فِیْ جَنَّةٍ عَالِیَةٍ ۟ۙ
Fee Jannatin ʻaaliyah,
in an elevated Garden,
Verse 69:23
قُطُوْفُهَا دَانِیَةٌ ۟
Q̣utoofuhaa daaniyah.
whose fruit will hang within reach.
Verse 69:24
كُلُوْا وَاشْرَبُوْا هَنِیْٓـًٔا بِمَاۤ اَسْلَفْتُمْ فِی الْاَیَّامِ الْخَالِیَةِ ۟
Kuloo washraboo haneeeʹam bimaaa ʹaslaftum fil ʹayyaamil khaaliyah!
˹They will be told,˺ “Eat and drink joyfully for what you did in the days gone by.”
Verse 69:25
وَاَمَّا مَنْ اُوْتِیَ كِتٰبَهٗ بِشِمَالِهٖ ۙ۬ فَیَقُوْلُ یٰلَیْتَنِیْ لَمْ اُوْتَ كِتٰبِیَهْ ۟ۚ
Wa-ʹammaa man ʹootiya Kitaabahoo bishimaalihee fayaq̣oolu yaalaytanee lam ʹoota Kitaabiyah!
And as for those given their record in their left hand, they will cry ˹bitterly˺, “I wish I had not been given my record,
Verse 69:26
وَلَمْ اَدْرِ مَا حِسَابِیَهْ ۟ۚ
Wa-lam ʹadri maa- ḥisaabiyah!
nor known anything of my reckoning!
Verse 69:27
یٰلَیْتَهَا كَانَتِ الْقَاضِیَةَ ۟ۚ
Yaa-laytahaa kaanatil q̣aaḍiyah!
I wish death was the end!
Verse 69:28
مَاۤ اَغْنٰی عَنِّیْ مَالِیَهْ ۟ۚ
Maaa ʹag̣naa ʻannee maaliyah!
My wealth has not benefited me!
Verse 69:29
هَلَكَ عَنِّیْ سُلْطٰنِیَهْ ۟ۚ
Halaka ʻannee sulṭaaniyah!
My authority has been stripped from me.”
Verse 69:30
خُذُوْهُ فَغُلُّوْهُ ۟ۙ
Khuẓoohu fag̣ullooh,
˹It will be said,˺ “Seize and shackle them,
Verse 69:31
ثُمَّ الْجَحِیْمَ صَلُّوْهُ ۟ۙ
S̤ummal Jaḥeema ṣallooh,
then burn them in Hell,
Verse 69:32
ثُمَّ فِیْ سِلْسِلَةٍ ذَرْعُهَا سَبْعُوْنَ ذِرَاعًا فَاسْلُكُوْهُ ۟ؕ
S̤umma fee silsilatiñ ẓarʻuhaa sabʻoona ẓiraaʻañ faslukooh!
then tie them up with chains seventy arms long.
Verse 69:33
اِنَّهٗ كَانَ لَا یُؤْمِنُ بِاللّٰهِ الْعَظِیْمِ ۟ۙ
ʹInnahoo kaana laa- yuʹminu billaahil ʻAz̤̣eem,
For they never had faith in Allah, the Greatest,
Verse 69:34
وَلَا یَحُضُّ عَلٰی طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِیْنِ ۟ؕ
Wa-laa yaḥuḍḍu ʻalaa ṭaʻaamil miskeen!
nor encouraged the feeding of the poor.
Verse 69:35
فَلَیْسَ لَهُ الْیَوْمَ هٰهُنَا حَمِیْمٌ ۟ۙ
Falaysa lahul Yawma haahunaa ḥameem,
So this Day they will have no close friend here,
Verse 69:36
وَّلَا طَعَامٌ اِلَّا مِنْ غِسْلِیْنٍ ۟ۙ
Wa-laa ṭaʻaamun ʹillaa min g̣isleen,
nor any food except ˹oozing˺ pus,
Verse 69:37
لَّا یَاْكُلُهٗۤ اِلَّا الْخَاطِـُٔوْنَ ۟۠
Laa- yaʹkuluhooo ʹillal khaaṭiʹoon.
which none will eat except the evildoers.”
Verse 69:38
فَلَاۤ اُقْسِمُ بِمَا تُبْصِرُوْنَ ۟ۙ
Falaaa ʹuq̣simu bimaa tubṣiroon
Now, I do swear by whatever you see,
Verse 69:39
وَمَا لَا تُبْصِرُوْنَ ۟ۙ
Wamaa laa- tubṣiroon,―
and whatever you cannot see!
Verse 69:40
اِنَّهٗ لَقَوْلُ رَسُوْلٍ كَرِیْمٍ ۟ۚۙ
ʹInnahoo laq̣awlu Rasooliñ Kareem;
Indeed, this ˹Quran˺ is the recitation of a noble Messenger.
Verse 69:41
وَّمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَاعِرٍ ؕ قَلِیْلًا مَّا تُؤْمِنُوْنَ ۟ۙ
Wa-maa huwa biq̣awli shaaʻir: q̣aleelam maa tuʹminoon!
It is not the prose of a poet ˹as you claim˺, ˹yet˺ you hardly have any faith.
Verse 69:42
وَلَا بِقَوْلِ كَاهِنٍ ؕ قَلِیْلًا مَّا تَذَكَّرُوْنَ ۟ؕ
Wa-laa biq̣awli kaahin: q̣aleelam maa taẓakkaroon.
Nor is it the mumbling of a fortune-teller, ˹yet˺ you are hardly mindful.
Verse 69:43
تَنْزِیْلٌ مِّنْ رَّبِّ الْعٰلَمِیْنَ ۟
Tañzeelum mir Rabbil ʻAalameen.
˹It is˺ a revelation from the Lord of all worlds.
Verse 69:44
وَلَوْ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَیْنَا بَعْضَ الْاَقَاوِیْلِ ۟ۙ
Wa-law taq̣awwala ʻalaynaa baʻḍal ʹaq̣aaweel,
Had the Messenger made up something in Our Name,
Verse 69:45
لَاَخَذْنَا مِنْهُ بِالْیَمِیْنِ ۟ۙ
Laʹakhaẓnaa minhu bilyameen,
We would have certainly seized him by his right hand,
Verse 69:46
ثُمَّ لَقَطَعْنَا مِنْهُ الْوَتِیْنَ ۟ؗۖ
S̤umma laq̣aṭaʻnaa minhul wateen:
then severed his aorta,
Verse 69:47
فَمَا مِنْكُمْ مِّنْ اَحَدٍ عَنْهُ حٰجِزِیْنَ ۟
Famaa miñkum min ʹaḥadin ʻanhu ḥaajizeen.
and none of you could have shielded him ˹from Us˺!
Verse 69:48
وَاِنَّهٗ لَتَذْكِرَةٌ لِّلْمُتَّقِیْنَ ۟
Wa-ʹinnahoo la-Taẓkiratul lil-Muttaq̣een.
Indeed, this ˹Quran˺ is a reminder to those mindful ˹of Allah˺.
Verse 69:49
وَاِنَّا لَنَعْلَمُ اَنَّ مِنْكُمْ مُّكَذِّبِیْنَ ۟
Wa-ʹinnaa lanaʻlamu ʹanna miñkum mukaẓẓibeen.
And We certainly know that some of you will persist in denial,
Verse 69:50
وَاِنَّهٗ لَحَسْرَةٌ عَلَی الْكٰفِرِیْنَ ۟
Wa-ʹinnahoo laḥasratun ʻalal kaafireen.
and it will surely be a source of regret for the disbelievers.
Verse 69:51
وَاِنَّهٗ لَحَقُّ الْیَقِیْنِ ۟
Wa-ʹinnahoo la-Ḥaq̣q̣ul yaq̣een.
And indeed, this ˹Quran˺ is the absolute truth.
Verse 69:52
فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِیْمِ ۟۠
Fasabbiḥ bismi Rabbikal ʻAz̤̣eem.
So glorify the Name of your Lord, the Greatest.
