Surah Ad-Dukhan
Surah Ad-Dukhan (The Smoke) is Surah 44 of the Holy Quran, a Meccan Surah with 59 verses, available here in English.
Verse 44:1
حٰمٓ ۟ۚۛ
Ḥaa-Meeem.
Ḥâ-Mĩm.
Verse 44:2
وَالْكِتٰبِ الْمُبِیْنِ ۟ۙۛ
Wal-Kitaabil Mubeen.
By the clear Book!
Verse 44:3
اِنَّاۤ اَنْزَلْنٰهُ فِیْ لَیْلَةٍ مُّبٰرَكَةٍ اِنَّا كُنَّا مُنْذِرِیْنَ ۟
ʹInnaaa ʹañzalnaahu fee laylatim mubaarakatin ʹinnaa kunnaa muñẓireen.
Indeed, We sent it down on a blessed night, for We always warn ˹against evil˺.
Verse 44:4
فِیْهَا یُفْرَقُ كُلُّ اَمْرٍ حَكِیْمٍ ۟ۙ
Feehaa yufraq̣u kullu ʹamrin ḥakeem,
On that night every matter of wisdom is ordained
Verse 44:5
اَمْرًا مِّنْ عِنْدِنَا ؕ اِنَّا كُنَّا مُرْسِلِیْنَ ۟ۚ
ʹAmram min ʻiñdinaa. ʹInnaa kunnaa mursileen―
by a command from Us, for We have always sent ˹messengers˺
Verse 44:6
رَحْمَةً مِّنْ رَّبِّكَ ؕ اِنَّهٗ هُوَ السَّمِیْعُ الْعَلِیْمُ ۟ۙ
Raḥmatam mir Rabbik: ʹinnahoo Huwas Sameeʻul ʻAleem;
as a mercy from your Lord. He ˹alone˺ is truly the All-Hearing, All-Knowing—
Verse 44:7
رَبِّ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِ وَمَا بَیْنَهُمَا ۘ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُّوْقِنِیْنَ ۟
Rabbis samaawaati wal-ʹarḍi wa-maa baynahumaa, Iñ kuntum mooq̣ineen.
the Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything in between, if only you had sure faith.
Verse 44:8
لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ یُحْیٖ وَیُمِیْتُ ؕ رَبُّكُمْ وَرَبُّ اٰبَآىِٕكُمُ الْاَوَّلِیْنَ ۟
Laaa ʹilaaha ʹillaa Huwa yuḥyee wa-yumeet:― Rabbukum wa-Rabbu ʹaabaaaʹikumul ʹawwaleen.
There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him. He ˹alone˺ gives life and causes death. ˹He is˺ your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers.
Verse 44:9
بَلْ هُمْ فِیْ شَكٍّ یَّلْعَبُوْنَ ۟
Bal hum fee shakkiñy yalʻaboon.
In fact, they are in doubt, amusing themselves.
Verse 44:10
فَارْتَقِبْ یَوْمَ تَاْتِی السَّمَآءُ بِدُخَانٍ مُّبِیْنٍ ۟ۙ
Fartaq̣ib Yawma taʹtis samaaaʹu bi-DUKHAANIM mubeen,
Wait then ˹O Prophet˺ for the day ˹when˺ the sky will be veiled in haze, clearly visible,
Verse 44:11
یَّغْشَی النَّاسَ ؕ هٰذَا عَذَابٌ اَلِیْمٌ ۟
Yag̣shan naas: haaẓaa ʻAẓaabun ʹaleem.
overwhelming the people. ˹They will cry,˺ “This is a painful torment.
Verse 44:12
رَبَّنَا اكْشِفْ عَنَّا الْعَذَابَ اِنَّا مُؤْمِنُوْنَ ۟
Rabbanak shif ʻannal ʻaẓaaba ʹinnaa Muʹminoon!
Our Lord! Remove ˹this˺ torment from us, ˹and˺ we will certainly believe.”
Verse 44:13
اَنّٰی لَهُمُ الذِّكْرٰی وَقَدْ جَآءَهُمْ رَسُوْلٌ مُّبِیْنٌ ۟ۙ
ʹAnnaa lahumuẓ Ẓikraa wa-q̣ad jaaaʹahum Rasoolum mubeen,―
How can they be reminded when a messenger has already come to them, making things clear,
Verse 44:14
ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوْا عَنْهُ وَقَالُوْا مُعَلَّمٌ مَّجْنُوْنٌ ۟ۘ
S̤umma tawallaw ʻanhu wa-q̣aaloo muʻallamum majnoon.
then they turned away from him, saying, “A madman, taught by others!”?
Verse 44:15
اِنَّا كَاشِفُوا الْعَذَابِ قَلِیْلًا اِنَّكُمْ عَآىِٕدُوْنَ ۟ۘ
ʹInnaa kaashiful ʻaẓaabi q̣aleelan ʹinnakum ʻaaaʹidoon.
Indeed, We will remove ˹that˺ torment for a while, and you ˹Meccans˺ will return ˹to disbelief˺.
Verse 44:16
یَوْمَ نَبْطِشُ الْبَطْشَةَ الْكُبْرٰی ۚ اِنَّا مُنْتَقِمُوْنَ ۟
Yawma nabṭishul baṭshatal kubraa: ʹinnaa muñtaq̣imoon!
˹Then˺ on the Day We will deal ˹you˺ the fiercest blow, We will surely inflict punishment.
Verse 44:17
وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَجَآءَهُمْ رَسُوْلٌ كَرِیْمٌ ۟ۙ
Wa-laq̣ad fatannaa q̣ablahum q̣awma Firʻawna wa-jaaaʹahum Rasooluñ Kareem,
Indeed, before them We tested Pharaoh’s people: a noble messenger came to them,
Verse 44:18
اَنْ اَدُّوْۤا اِلَیَّ عِبَادَ اللّٰهِ ؕ اِنِّیْ لَكُمْ رَسُوْلٌ اَمِیْنٌ ۟ۙ
ʹAn ʹaddooo ʹilayya ʻibaadal laah: ʹinnee lakum Rasoolun ʹameen;
˹proclaiming,˺ “Hand over the servants of Allah to me. I am truly a trustworthy messenger to you.
Verse 44:19
وَّاَنْ لَّا تَعْلُوْا عَلَی اللّٰهِ ؕ اِنِّیْۤ اٰتِیْكُمْ بِسُلْطٰنٍ مُّبِیْنٍ ۟ۚ
Wa-ʹal laa taʻloo ʻalal laah: ʹinneee ʹaateekum̃ bisulṭaanim mubeen.
And do not be arrogant with Allah. I have certainly come to you with a compelling proof.
Verse 44:20
وَاِنِّیْ عُذْتُ بِرَبِّیْ وَرَبِّكُمْ اَنْ تَرْجُمُوْنِ ۟ؗ
Wa-ʹinnee ʻuẓtu bi-Rabbee wa-Rabbikum ʹañ tarjumoon.
And indeed, I seek refuge with my Lord and your Lord so you do not stone me ˹to death˺.
Verse 44:21
وَاِنْ لَّمْ تُؤْمِنُوْا لِیْ فَاعْتَزِلُوْنِ ۟
Wa-ʹil lam tuʹminoo lee faʻtaziloon.
˹But˺ if you do not believe me, then let me be.”
Verse 44:22
فَدَعَا رَبَّهٗۤ اَنَّ هٰۤؤُلَآءِ قَوْمٌ مُّجْرِمُوْنَ ۟
Fadaʻaa Rabbahooo ʹanna haaaʹulaaaʹi q̣awmum mujrimoon.
Ultimately, he cried out to his Lord, “These are a wicked people!”
Verse 44:23
فَاَسْرِ بِعِبَادِیْ لَیْلًا اِنَّكُمْ مُّتَّبَعُوْنَ ۟ۙ
Faʹasri biʹibaadee laylan ʹinnakum muttabaʻoon.
˹Allah responded,˺ “Leave with My servants at night, for you will surely be pursued.
Verse 44:24
وَاتْرُكِ الْبَحْرَ رَهْوًا ؕ اِنَّهُمْ جُنْدٌ مُّغْرَقُوْنَ ۟
Watrukil baḥra rahwaa: ʹinnahum juñdum mug̣raq̣oon.
And leave the sea parted, for they are certainly an army bound to drown.”
Verse 44:25
كَمْ تَرَكُوْا مِنْ جَنّٰتٍ وَّعُیُوْنٍ ۟ۙ
Kam tarakoo miñ jannaatiñw waʻuyoon,
˹Imagine˺ how many gardens and springs the tyrants left behind,
Verse 44:26
وَّزُرُوْعٍ وَّمَقَامٍ كَرِیْمٍ ۟ۙ
Wa-zurooʻiñw Wamaq̣aamiñ kareem,
as well as ˹various˺ crops and splendid residences,
Verse 44:27
وَّنَعْمَةٍ كَانُوْا فِیْهَا فٰكِهِیْنَ ۟ۙ
Wa-naʻmatiñ kaanoo feehaa faakiheen!
and luxuries which they fully enjoyed.
Verse 44:28
كَذٰلِكَ ۫ وَاَوْرَثْنٰهَا قَوْمًا اٰخَرِیْنَ ۟
Kaẓaalik! wa-ʹawras̤naahaa q̣awman ʹaakhareen!
So it was. And We awarded it ˹all˺ to another people.
Verse 44:29
فَمَا بَكَتْ عَلَیْهِمُ السَّمَآءُ وَالْاَرْضُ وَمَا كَانُوْا مُنْظَرِیْنَ ۟۠
Famaa bakat ʻalayhimus samaaaʹu wal-ʹarḍu wa-maa kaanoo muñz̤̣areen.
Neither heaven nor earth wept over them, nor was their fate delayed.
Verse 44:30
وَلَقَدْ نَجَّیْنَا بَنِیْۤ اِسْرَآءِیْلَ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ الْمُهِیْنِ ۟ۙ
Wa-laq̣ad najjaynaa Baneee ʹIsraaaʹeela minal ʻaẓaabil muheen.
And We certainly delivered the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment
Verse 44:31
مِنْ فِرْعَوْنَ ؕ اِنَّهٗ كَانَ عَالِیًا مِّنَ الْمُسْرِفِیْنَ ۟
Miñ Firʻawn: ʹinnahoo kaana ʻaaliyam minal musrifeen.
of Pharaoh. He was truly a tyrant, a transgressor.
Verse 44:32
وَلَقَدِ اخْتَرْنٰهُمْ عَلٰی عِلْمٍ عَلَی الْعٰلَمِیْنَ ۟ۚ
Wa-laq̣adikh tarnaahum ʻalaa ʻilmin ʻalal ʻaalameen,
And indeed, We chose the Israelites knowingly above the others.
Verse 44:33
وَاٰتَیْنٰهُمْ مِّنَ الْاٰیٰتِ مَا فِیْهِ بَلٰٓؤٌا مُّبِیْنٌ ۟
Waʹaataynaahum minal ʹAayaati maa- feehi balaaaʹum mubeen.
And We showed them signs in which there was a clear test.
Verse 44:34
اِنَّ هٰۤؤُلَآءِ لَیَقُوْلُوْنَ ۟ۙ
ʹInna haaaʹulaaaʹi layaq̣ooloon,
Indeed, these ˹Meccans˺ say,
Verse 44:35
اِنْ هِیَ اِلَّا مَوْتَتُنَا الْاُوْلٰی وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُنْشَرِیْنَ ۟
ʹIn hiya ʹillaa mawtatunal ʹoolaa wa-maa naḥnu bimuñshareen.
“There is nothing beyond our first death, and we will never be resurrected.
Verse 44:36
فَاْتُوْا بِاٰبَآىِٕنَاۤ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ صٰدِقِیْنَ ۟
Faʹtoo biʹaabaaaʹinaaa ʹiñ kuñtum ṣaadiq̣een!
Bring ˹back˺ our forefathers, if what you say is true.”
Verse 44:37
اَهُمْ خَیْرٌ اَمْ قَوْمُ تُبَّعٍ ۙ وَّالَّذِیْنَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ ؕ اَهْلَكْنٰهُمْ ؗ اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوْا مُجْرِمِیْنَ ۟
ʹAhum khayrun ʹam q̣awmu Tubbaʻiñw wallaẓeena miñ q̣ablihim? ʹAhlaknaahum ʹinnahum kaanoo mujrimeen.
Are they superior to the people of Tubba’ and those before them? We destroyed them ˹all˺, ˹for˺ they were truly wicked.
Verse 44:38
وَمَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضَ وَمَا بَیْنَهُمَا لٰعِبِیْنَ ۟
Wa-maa khalaq̣nas samaawaati wal-ʹarḍa wa-maa baynahumaa laaʻibeen.
We did not create the heavens and the earth and everything in between for sport.
Verse 44:39
مَا خَلَقْنٰهُمَاۤ اِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلٰكِنَّ اَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا یَعْلَمُوْنَ ۟
Maa- khalaq̣naahumaaa ʹillaa bilḥaq̣q̣i wa-laakinna ʹaks̤arahum laa- yaʻlamoon.
We only created them for a purpose, but most of these ˹pagans˺ do not know.
Verse 44:40
اِنَّ یَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ مِیْقَاتُهُمْ اَجْمَعِیْنَ ۟ۙ
ʹInna Yawmal faṣli meeq̣aatuhum ʹajmaʻeen.―
Surely the Day of ˹Final˺ Decision is the time appointed for all—
Verse 44:41
یَوْمَ لَا یُغْنِیْ مَوْلًی عَنْ مَّوْلًی شَیْـًٔا وَّلَا هُمْ یُنْصَرُوْنَ ۟ۙ
Yawma laa- yug̣nee mawlan ʻam mawlañ shayʹañw walaa hum yuñṣaroon,
the Day no kith or kin will be of benefit to another whatsoever, nor will they be helped,
Verse 44:42
اِلَّا مَنْ رَّحِمَ اللّٰهُ ؕ اِنَّهٗ هُوَ الْعَزِیْزُ الرَّحِیْمُ ۟۠
ʹIllaa mar raḥimal laah: ʹinnahoo Huwal ʻAzeezur Raḥeem.
except those shown mercy by Allah. He is truly the Almighty, Most Merciful.
Verse 44:43
اِنَّ شَجَرَتَ الزَّقُّوْمِ ۟ۙ
ʹInna shajarataz Zaq̣q̣oom,
Surely ˹the fruit of˺ the tree of Zaqqûm
Verse 44:44
طَعَامُ الْاَثِیْمِ ۟
Ṭaʻaamul ʹas̤eem,―
will be the food of the evildoer.
Verse 44:45
كَالْمُهْلِ ۛۚ یَغْلِیْ فِی الْبُطُوْنِ ۟ۙ
Kalmuhli yag̣lee fil buṭoon,
Like molten metal, it will boil in the bellies
Verse 44:46
كَغَلْیِ الْحَمِیْمِ ۟
Kag̣alyil ḥameem.
like the boiling of hot water.
Verse 44:47
خُذُوْهُ فَاعْتِلُوْهُ اِلٰی سَوَآءِ الْجَحِیْمِ ۟ۗۖ
Khuẓoohu faʻtiloohu ʹilaa sawaaaʹil Jaḥeem!
˹It will be said,˺ “Seize them and drag them into the depths of the Hellfire.
Verse 44:48
ثُمَّ صُبُّوْا فَوْقَ رَاْسِهٖ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْحَمِیْمِ ۟ؕ
S̤umma ṣubboo fawq̣a raʹsihee min ʻAẓaabil Ḥameem.
Then pour over their heads the torment of boiling water.”
Verse 44:49
ذُقْ ۙۚ اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ الْعَزِیْزُ الْكَرِیْمُ ۟
Ẓuq̣! ʹinnaka ʹañtal ʻazeezul kareem!
˹The wicked will be told,˺ “Taste this. You mighty, noble one!
Verse 44:50
اِنَّ هٰذَا مَا كُنْتُمْ بِهٖ تَمْتَرُوْنَ ۟
ʹInna haaẓaa maa- kuñtum̃ bihee tamtaroon!
This is truly what you ˹all˺ used to doubt.”
Verse 44:51
اِنَّ الْمُتَّقِیْنَ فِیْ مَقَامٍ اَمِیْنٍ ۟ۙ
ʹInnal Muttaq̣eena fee maq̣aamin ʹameen,
Indeed, the righteous will be in a secure place,
Verse 44:52
فِیْ جَنّٰتٍ وَّعُیُوْنٍ ۟ۚۙ
Fee Jannaatiñw Waʻuyoon;
amid Gardens and springs,
Verse 44:53
یَّلْبَسُوْنَ مِنْ سُنْدُسٍ وَّاِسْتَبْرَقٍ مُّتَقٰبِلِیْنَ ۟ۚۙ
Yalbasoona Miñ suñdusiñw waʹistabraq̣im mutaq̣aabileen;
dressed in fine silk and rich brocade, facing one another.
Verse 44:54
كَذٰلِكَ ۫ وَزَوَّجْنٰهُمْ بِحُوْرٍ عِیْنٍ ۟ؕ
Kaẓaalik; wa-zawwajnaahum̃ biḥoorin ʻeen.
So it will be. And We will pair them to maidens with gorgeous eyes.
Verse 44:55
یَدْعُوْنَ فِیْهَا بِكُلِّ فَاكِهَةٍ اٰمِنِیْنَ ۟ۙ
Yadʻoona feeha bikulli faakihatin ʹaamineen;
There they will call for every fruit in serenity.
Verse 44:56
لَا یَذُوْقُوْنَ فِیْهَا الْمَوْتَ اِلَّا الْمَوْتَةَ الْاُوْلٰی ۚ وَوَقٰىهُمْ عَذَابَ الْجَحِیْمِ ۟ۙ
Laa- yaẓooq̣oona feehal Mawta ʹillal mawtatal ʹoolaa; wa-waq̣aahum ʻaẓaabal Jaḥeem,―
There they will never taste death, beyond the first death. And He will protect them from the punishment of the Hellfire—
Verse 44:57
فَضْلًا مِّنْ رَّبِّكَ ؕ ذٰلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِیْمُ ۟
Faḍlam mir Rabbik! Ẓaalika huwal fawzul ʻaz̤̣eem!
as ˹an act of˺ grace from your Lord. That is ˹truly˺ the ultimate triumph.
Verse 44:58
فَاِنَّمَا یَسَّرْنٰهُ بِلِسَانِكَ لَعَلَّهُمْ یَتَذَكَّرُوْنَ ۟
Faʹinnamaa yassarnaahu bilisaanika laʻallahum yataẓakkaroon.
Indeed, We have made this ˹Quran˺ easy in your own language ˹O Prophet˺ so perhaps they will be mindful.
Verse 44:59
فَارْتَقِبْ اِنَّهُمْ مُّرْتَقِبُوْنَ ۟۠
Fartaq̣ib ʹinnahum murtaq̣iboon.
Wait then! They too are certainly waiting.
