Reciting the Basmalah before al-Fatihah

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ.

Transliteration

Bismi-llāhi-r-Raḥmāni-r-Raḥīm.

Translation

In the Name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Very Merciful.

Virtue and context

Nuaym al-Mujmir reported that he prayed behind Abu Hurairah (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu). Abu Hurairah recited the basmalah and then Surah al-Fatihah. When he reached its closing words about those who incurred anger and those who went astray, he said amin and the congregation also said amin. Abu Hurairah said the takbir each time he prostrated and when he rose after sitting at the end of two units. After completing the prayer with the salutation, he swore by the One in whose hand was his soul that his prayer resembled the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ more closely than theirs did.
