Virtue and context
Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) reported that he prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night. The Prophet ﷺ recited Surah al-Baqarah, then al-Nisa and then Ali Imran at a measured pace. When he passed a verse glorifying Allah, he glorified Him; when a verse contained a petition, he asked Allah; and when it mentioned seeking protection, he sought Allah’s protection.
The Prophet ﷺ then bowed and glorified his Magnificent Lord. His bowing lasted about as long as his standing. When he rose, he declared that Allah hears the one who praises Him and then stood for roughly as long as he had bowed. He prostrated and glorified his Most High Lord, and the prostration lasted nearly as long as the standing. A transmitted wording adds the praise of their Lord after the declaration that Allah hears whoever praises Him.
