Attribute the Rain to Allah’s Grace and Mercy

مُطِرنَا بِفَضلِ اللهِ وَرَحمَتِهِ

Transliteration

Mutirnā bi-fadhli-llāhi wa raḥmatih.

Translation

We have been given rain thanks to the Grace and Mercy of Allah.

Virtue and context

Zayd ibn Khalid al-Juhani (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led the dawn prayer at Hudaybiyyah after rain had fallen during the night. When the prayer ended, he turned to the people and asked whether they knew what their Lord had said. They answered that Allah and His Messenger knew best. The Prophet ﷺ explained that Allah said some of His servants had begun the morning as believers in Him and others as disbelievers. Whoever attributed the rain to Allah’s grace and mercy had believed in Allah and rejected belief in the stars, whereas whoever attributed it to a particular star had disbelieved in Allah and believed in that star.
