Ask Allah to Redirect Harmful Rain

اَللّٰهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا وَلاَ عَلَيْنَا ، اَللّٰهُمَّ عَلَى الآكَامِ وَالظِّرَابِ ، وَبُطُونِ الْأَوْدِيَةِ ، وَمَنَابِتِ الشَّجَرِ

Transliteration

Allāhumma ḥawālaynā wa lā ʿalaynā, Allāhumma ʿala-l-ākāmi wa-ẓ-ẓirāb, wa buṭūni-l-awdiyah, wa manābiti-sh-shajar.

Translation

O Allah, let the rain fall around us and not upon us. O Allah, [let it fall] on the pastures, hills, valleys and the roots of trees.

Virtue and context

Anas ibn Malik (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) reported that while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering the Friday sermon, a man entered and said that livestock were dying and roads had been cut off, asking him to pray for rain. The Prophet ﷺ raised both hands and asked Allah for rain three times. Although the sky had been clear, a cloud appeared from behind Mount Sila, spread overhead, and brought rain that continued for a week. On the next Friday, a man complained that livestock were dying and roads were blocked because of the rain. The Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and asked Allah to send the rain around them rather than upon them—over the plateaus, hills, valleys, and places where trees grow. The rain stopped, and the people left walking in sunshine. When Sharik asked Anas whether the same man had spoken on both Fridays, Anas said he did not know.
