Pray for the Host After Eating

أَفْطَرَ عِنْدَكُمُ الصَّائِمُوْنَ ، وَأَكَلَ طَعَامَكُمُ الأَبْرَارُ ، وَصَلَّتْ عَلَيْكُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ.

Transliteration

Afṭara ʿindakumu-ṣ-ṣāimūn, wa akala ṭaʿāmakumu-l-abrār, wa ṣallat ʿalaykumu-l-malā’ikah.

Translation

May the fasting open their fasts with you, the pious eat your food, and the angels pray for blessings on you.

Virtue and context

Anas ibn Malik (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ visited Saʿd ibn Ubadah, who served him bread and olive oil. After eating, the Prophet ﷺ prayed that fasting people might break their fast in the household, that righteous people might eat its food, and that the angels might invoke blessings upon its people. Jabir (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) reported that Abu al-Haytham prepared food for the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions. When they had finished, the Prophet ﷺ told them to reward their host. He explained that a host is repaid when guests enter the home, eat the food, drink what is offered, and then supplicate for the household.
