Seeking Protection for Children

أُعِيْذُكُمَا (أُعِيْذُكَ) بِكَلِمَاتِ اللّٰهِ التَّامَّةِ ، مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَّهَامَّةٍ ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَّامَّةٍّّ.

Transliteration

Uʿīdhukumā (Uʿīdhuka) bi-kalimāti-llāhi-t-tāmmah, min kulli shayṭāniw-wa hāmmah, wa min kulli ʿaynil-lāmmah

Translation

I seek protection for you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every beast, and from every evil eye.

Virtue and context

Abdullah ibn Abbas (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhuma) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ used the displayed words to seek Allah’s protection for al-Hasan and al-Husayn. He explained that their forefather Ibrahim عليه السلام had used the same invocation for Ismail and Ishaq عليهما السلام, seeking refuge in Allah’s perfect words from every devil, every poisonous or harmful creature, and every harmful, envious eye. Jabir (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) also reported the Prophet’s ﷺ practical guidance for protecting a household at night: keep children close when evening begins because devils spread at that time; close doors while mentioning Allah’s name; secure waterskins; cover vessels, even with something small; and extinguish lamps.
