Seeking Allah’s Protection for Children

أُعِيْذُكُمَا (أُعِيْذُكَ) بِكَلِمَاتِ اللّٰهِ التَّامَّةِ ، مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَّهَامَّةٍ ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَّامَّةٍّّ.

Transliteration

Uʿīdhukumā (Uʿīdhuka) bi-kalimāti-llāhi-t-tāmmah, min kulli shayṭāniw-wa hāmmah, wa min kulli ʿaynil-lāmmah

Translation

I seek protection for you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every beast, and from every evil eye.

Virtue and context

Abdullah ibn Abbas (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhuma) reported that the Prophet ﷺ sought Allah’s protection for al-Hasan and al-Husayn with the displayed words. He explained that Ibrahim عليه السلام had used the same invocation for Ismail and Ishaq عليهما السلام, seeking refuge in Allah’s perfect words from every devil, every harmful creature, and every envious eye. Jabir (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) also transmitted the Prophet’s ﷺ evening precautions for children and the home: keep children close when darkness begins, close doors while mentioning Allah, secure waterskins, cover vessels, and extinguish lamps.
