When Something Pleases You, Remember the Life of the Hereafter

لَبَّيْكَ ، إِنَّ الْعَيْشَ عَيْشُ الْآخِرَةِ

Transliteration

Labbayk, inna-l-‘aysha ‘ayshu-l-ākhirah.

Translation

At Your service (O Allah!), the real life is the life of the Hereafter.

Virtue and context

Mujahid ibn Jabr reported that whenever something pleased the Prophet ﷺ, he responded with praise that affirmed the true life to be the life of the Hereafter. Anas ibn Malik (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) described one such setting during the digging of the Trench. When the Prophet ﷺ saw the Emigrants and Helpers working in the cold while enduring hardship and hunger, he declared that the real life is the life of the Hereafter and asked Allah to forgive them. They answered by renewing their pledge to remain committed to striving alongside him. Ibn Abbas (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhuma) also reported that at Arafat the Prophet ﷺ added to the talbiyah an affirmation that the true good is the good of the Hereafter.
