When Frightened during Sleep

أَعُوْذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللّٰهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ غَضَبِهِ وَعِقَابِهِ ، وَشَرِّ عِبَادِهِ ، وَمِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِيْنِ وَأَنْ يَّحْضُرُوْنِ.

Transliteration

Aʿūdhu bi-kalimātil-llāhi-t-tāmmāti min ghaḍabihi wa ʿiqābih, wa sharri ʿibādih, wa min hamazāti-sh-shayāṭīni wa ay-yaḥaḍurūn.

Translation

I seek protection in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and punishment, from the evil of His servants, and from the evil suggestions of the devils and from them appearing to me.

Virtue and context

Abdullah ibn Amr (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhumā), through Amr ibn Shuʿayb from his father, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed anyone frightened during sleep to seek refuge in Allah’s perfect words from His anger and punishment, the evil of His servants, the whisperings of the devils, and their presence. The Prophet ﷺ said that those things would then not harm the person. Abdullah ibn Amr used to teach these words to his children who were old enough to learn them. For a child who had not yet reached that age, he would write the words on a sheet and hang it around the child’s neck.
