Praise Allah’s Might and Dominion in Rukuʿ and Sujud

سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْجَبَرُوْتِ ، وَالْمَلَكُوْتِ ، والْكِبْرِيَاءِ ، وَالْعَظَمَةِ

Transliteration

Subḥāna Dhil-jabarūti wal-malakūt, wal-kibriyā’i wal-ʿaẓamah.

Translation

How free from imperfection is the Owner of might, dominion, magnificence and greatness. (Nasā’ī)

Virtue and context

Awf ibn Malik (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) reported that he prayed the night prayer with the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ first used the siwak and performed wudu, then stood and began reciting Surah al-Baqarah. Whenever he reached a verse of mercy, he paused to ask Allah for mercy; whenever he reached a verse of punishment, he paused to seek refuge from it. He ﷺ then bowed for as long as he had stood, glorifying the Owner of might, dominion, magnificence, and greatness. He prostrated for as long as he had bowed and repeated the same glorification. He then recited Surah Ali Imran, followed by one surah after another, maintaining this pattern each time.
