Glorify the Lord of Power and Sovereignty in Rukuʿ

سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْجَبَرُوْتِ ، والْمَلَكُوْتِ ، والْكِبْرِيَاءِ ، والْعَظَمَةِ.

Transliteration

Subḥāna dhi-l-jabarūt, wa-l-malakūt, wa-l kibriyā', wa-l-ʿaẓamah.

Translation

How perfect is the Owner of might, dominion, grandeur and greatness!

Virtue and context

Awf ibn Malik (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) prayed the night prayer with the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ first used the siwak and performed ablution, then stood and began reciting Surah al-Baqarah. At every verse of mercy he paused and asked Allah for mercy, and at every verse of punishment he paused and sought Allah’s protection. He then bowed for as long as he had stood, glorifying the One who possesses all power, sovereignty, magnificence, and greatness. He prostrated for as long as he had bowed and used the same glorification in prostration. He then recited Surah Aal ʿImran followed by further surahs, repeating the same manner of prayer.
