Tasbih, Tahmid and Takbir Before Sunrise and Sunset

سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ ، اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ ، اَللّٰهُ أَكْبَرُ.

Transliteration

Subḥāna-llāh, Alḥamdu li-llāh, Allāhu akbar.

Translation

Allah is free from imperfection. All praise be to Allah. Allah is the Greatest.

Virtue and context

Abdullah ibn Amr (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhuma), through the narration of Amr ibn Shuʿayb from his father and grandfather, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ described the reward of these remembrances before sunrise and before sunset. The Prophet ﷺ said that reciting “Subhan Allah” 100 times before sunrise and 100 times before sunset is better than offering 100 camels. Reciting “Alhamdulillah” 100 times before sunrise and 100 times before sunset is better than providing 100 horses upon which 100 riders are sent. Reciting “Allahu Akbar” 100 times before sunrise and 100 times before sunset is better than freeing 100 slaves. The same source continues with a fourth remembrance—“La ilaha illa Allah…”—whose wording is not included in this particular Mushna record.
