Virtue and context
Buraydah ibn al-Husayb (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) narrated that a group of the Ansar encouraged Ali (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) to speak to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about Fatimah (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanha). Ali went to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned her. The Prophet ﷺ replied with words of welcome. Although Ali was unsure what the answer meant, the Ansar reassured him that either expression alone would have been enough.
After the marriage, the Prophet ﷺ told Ali that a wedding must have a feast. Saʿd offered a ram, and a group of Ansar gathered measures of grain. On the wedding night, the Prophet ﷺ told Ali not to proceed until he had met him. He then called for water, performed ablution, poured the water over Ali, and asked Allah to bless both spouses and bless them in their union.
