Virtue and context
Abdullah ibn Abbas (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhuma) narrated that he entered the home of Maimunah with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Khalid ibn al-Walid. A vessel of milk was brought, and the Prophet ﷺ drank from it. Ibn Abbas was on his right and Khalid on his left. The Prophet ﷺ told Ibn Abbas that the right to drink next was his, while asking whether he would allow Khalid to drink first. Ibn Abbas declined to give anyone preference over what remained from the Prophet ﷺ, so the vessel passed according to the right-hand order.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then taught that whoever is given food should ask Allah to bless it and provide something better, while whoever is given milk should ask Allah to bless it and increase it. He explained that nothing besides milk serves adequately as both food and drink.
