Virtue and context
Abu Saʿid al-Khudri (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose for the night prayer, he pronounced the takbir and then glorified and praised Allah, affirmed the blessedness of His name, the exaltedness of His majesty and that none besides Him is worthy of worship. He next declared Allah’s oneness three times and magnified Him greatly three times.
The Prophet ﷺ then sought refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing and All-Knowing, from the accursed devil, his evil suggestion, his puffing up and his spitting, after which he began the Qur’anic recitation. Abu Dawud also records a transmission observation that the report was said to have been narrated from al-Hasan without naming the Companion and that the error came from Jaʿfar.
