Glorifying the Lord of Power and Sovereignty in Prostration

سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْجَبَرُوْتِ ، وَالْمَلَكُوْتِ ، وَالْكِبْرِيَاءِ ، وَالْعَظَمَةِ.

Transliteration

Subḥāna Dhil-jabarūt, wal-malakūt, wal-kibriyā’i wal-ʿaẓamah.

Translation

How perfect is the Owner of might, dominion, grandeur and greatness.

Virtue and context

Awf ibn Malik (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) reported that he prayed the night prayer with the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ began by using the tooth-stick and performing ablution, then stood and prayed. While reciting Surah al-Baqarah, he paused at every verse of mercy to ask for mercy and at every verse of punishment to seek Allah’s refuge. The Prophet ﷺ bowed for as long as he had stood, glorifying the One who possesses all power, sovereignty, magnificence and might. He prostrated for as long as he had bowed and repeated the same glorification in prostration. He next recited Ali Imran and then further surahs, following the same practice each time.
