Night Prayer Supplication for Light

اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْ فِيْ قَلْبِيْ نُوْرًا ، وَفِيْ بَصَرِيْ نُوْرًا ، وَفِيْ سَمْعِيْ نُوْرًا ، وَعَنْ يَّمِيْنِيْ نُوْرًا ، وَعَنْ يَّسَارِيْ نُوْرًا ، وَفَوْقِيْ نُوْرًا ، وَتَحْتِيْ نُوْرًا ، وَأَمَامِيْ نُوْرًا ، وَخَلْفِيْ نُوْرًا ، وَاجْعَلْ لِيْ نُوْرًا

Transliteration

Allāhumma-j-ʿal fī qalbī nūrā, wa fī baṣarī nūrā, wa fī samʿī nūrā, wa ʿay-yamīnī nūrā, wa ʿay-yasārī nūrā, wa fawqī nūrā, wa taḥtī nūrā, wa amāmī nūrā, wa khalfī nūrā, wa-j-ʿal lī nūrā.

Translation

O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my sight and light in my hearing. Place light on my right and place light on my left. Place light above me and place light beneath me. Place light in front of me, place light behind me and grant me light.

Virtue and context

Abdullah ibn Abbas (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhuma) reported that he spent a night in the home of Maymunah. The Prophet ﷺ woke, relieved himself, washed his face and hands, and returned to sleep. Later he rose, opened a water skin, performed a complete but economical ablution, and began to pray. Ibn Abbas also performed ablution and stood on the Prophet’s left; the Prophet ﷺ took him by the ear and moved him to the right. He completed thirteen rakʿahs, lay down, and slept until his breathing became audible. When Bilal informed him that Fajr was approaching, the Prophet ﷺ prayed without renewing his ablution. Among his supplications, he asked Allah to place light in his heart, sight, and hearing; to his right and left; above and below him; before and behind him; and to grant him light. Kuraib said he had forgotten seven additional expressions. A descendant of al-Abbas later supplied five of them—light in the Prophet’s nerves, flesh, blood, hair, and skin—and mentioned two others.
