The Salawat Taught After the Tashahhud

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَّعَلَىٰ اٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىٰ اٰلِ إِبْرَاهِيْمَ ، وَبَارِكْ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَّعَلَىٰ اٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَىٰ اٰلِ إِبْرَاهِيْمَ فِي الْعَالَمِيْنَ ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيْدٌ مَّجِيْدٌ.

Transliteration

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammad wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā ṣallayta ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, wa bārik ʿalā Muḥammad, kamā bārakta ʿalā āli Ibrāhīma fi-l-ʿālamīn, innaka Ḥamīdu-m-Majīd.

Translation

O Allah, honour and have mercy upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You have honoured and had mercy upon the family of Ibrāhīm, and bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You have blessed the family of Ibrāhīm in the worlds. Indeed, You are the Most Praiseworthy, the Most Glorious.

Virtue and context

Abu Masud al-Ansari reported that they were gathered with Sad ibn Ubadah when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to them. Bashir ibn Sad said that Allah had commanded the believers to invoke blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and asked how they should do so. The Prophet ﷺ remained silent long enough that those present wished the question had not been asked. He then taught them to ask Allah to bless Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as He blessed Ibrahim’s family, and to bestow favor upon Muhammad and Muhammad’s family as He bestowed it upon Ibrahim’s family throughout the worlds, affirming that Allah is worthy of all praise and glory. He told them to give the salutation in the way they already knew.
