Steadfastness and Supplication When Meeting the Enemy

اَللّٰهُمَّ مُنْزِلَ الْكِتَابِ ، ومُجْرِيَ السَّحَابِ ، وهَازِمَ الْأحْزَابِ ، اهْزِمْهُمْ وانْصُرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ

Transliteration

Allāhumma munzila-l-kitāb, wa mujriya-s-saḥāb, wa hāzima-l-aḥzāb, ihzimhum wa-n-ṣurnā ʿalayhim.

Translation

O Allah, Revealer of the Book, Mover of the clouds, Defeater of the tribes, defeat them and grant us victory over them.

Virtue and context

Salim Abu al-Nadr reported that while serving as Umar ibn Ubaydullah’s clerk, he read a letter sent by Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu). The letter related that on one of the days when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ faced the enemy, he waited until the sun had declined and then addressed the people. He told them not to wish for an encounter with the enemy but to ask Allah for safety. If an encounter occurred, they were to remain steadfast and remember that Paradise lies beneath the shade of swords. He then called upon Allah as the Revealer of the Book, Mover of the clouds, and Defeater of the allied forces, asking Him to defeat the enemy and grant the believers victory over them.
