When Entering the Home

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ الْمَوْلَجِ ، وَخَيْرَ الْمَخْرَجِ ، بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ وَلَجْنَا ، وَبِسْمِ اللّٰهِ خَرَجْنَا ، وَعَلَى اللّٰهِ رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا.

Transliteration

Allāhumma innī as’aluka khayra-l-mawlaj, wa khayra-l-makhraj, bismi-llāhi walajnā, wa bismi-llāhi kharajnā, wa ʿalā-llāhi rabbinā tawakkalnā.

Translation

O Allah, I ask You for the best entrance and the best exit. In the Name of Allah we enter, in the Name of Allah we leave, and in Allah our Lord do we trust.

Virtue and context

Abu Malik al-Ashari (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ instructed a person entering the home to ask Allah for the best entrance and the best exit, enter and leave in Allah’s name, rely upon Allah, and then greet the family. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also explained that when Allah is remembered upon entering the home and before eating, Shaytan tells his companions that they have found neither a place to stay nor an evening meal. If Allah is not remembered, Shaytan announces that lodging and food have become available. Anas ibn Malik (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) further reported that the Prophet ﷺ instructed him to greet his family on entering, describing the greeting as a source of blessing for him and for the household.
